ok, this is my first mod in a while, basicly, what I'm gonna do is, seal up the case, and fill it with water...TAP water.... or maby distilled if I feel like it.
this computer actually belongs to a friend of mine, I was suposto make it look cool...and yeah, we both kinda forgot about it, but I found it, and now I'm gonna play with it.

this is what has already been done by me:
http://img260.imageshack.us/img260/1430/caseopen1id1.jpg
http://img366.imageshack.us/img366/3865/frontpanel1qg4.jpg
http://img369.imageshack.us/img369/2833/sidepanel01ch6.jpg

well I'm off to buy some silocone, and some new cutting disks, and a few other toy's.

(I'm not to worried about messing this thing up... it's ANCIENT! the pwr suply is 145W and dosn't even have a fan. and I forget what preocessor it's running, and I believe it's about a 6 Gig HDD..

tybrenis
03-12-2007, 12:24 PM
Wait, I don't get it. Do you expect the computer to still run when you're though with it?! If so, you'll need to use a non conductive fluid, like an oil. Do a Google search for oil mod or something similar, there've been a lot of vegetable oil mods in the past.

Nick_Black
03-12-2007, 12:31 PM
aye, that's what alot of prodjects use, oil, (yes I've read up on this) but, since it's such an old PC, but I'm thinking af maby putting some fish in there... i'm not too woried about heat, so I'm (basicly) going to slather the whole thing in silocone, with the heat sink sticking out, make water tight boxes around the HDD, cd drive, floppy drive and PSU, all the wireing is going to be put thrue tubing, and yeah, if all goe's well, nothing electrical should be touching water.

EDIT: oh, and I also have an Idea to generate a curent, without the use of a fan...

DaveW
03-12-2007, 12:41 PM
Wait...what? You're not serious, are you? Silicone over your parts, leaving some exposed, fill it with water, then use it as a fishtank? That somewhat borderlines on cruelty.

-Dave

Nick_Black

or maby

:dead: :dead: :dead: :dead:

we will see :p

edit: no, sorry, I'm not leaving ANYTHING exposed except for the fins of the CPU...

Nick_Black
03-12-2007, 01:07 PM
yes, that was my concern too, but (I believe) it's 200Mhz processor, I'm not too worried, plus, If I keep the water cool, it should keep the silocone hard on the surface preventing leaks. (hopefully)

***waits for sparx to fly and the smell of cooked fish to fill the air*** :P

I had an idea to do a fishtank PC like this a while back. I hope you do it so I don't have to pend my time trying and possibly failing.

I dunno, my mom like's eating fried fish... :p

I got my parts, gona start building now, hopfully I'll get some more pics in before the end of today...

Hey! I love fishsticks! Can I have some??

You know, what you could do is make the side panel or something like that into a fish tank. It doesn't even have to be very big. I have a gold fish in basically a suspended jar type thing. It's probably about 10 cups worth of water and he seems pretty happy. lol probably because every 10 seconds he thinks he is in a new place...

Pretty decent cuts by the way.

Drew

Interesting idea... this is gonna be worth watching.

Nick_Black
03-12-2007, 05:32 PM
ok, I was hoping for seethrue silocon... but oh well (oh, and I've decided, when I try to run it, I will have a video camara running... :D)

first I checked to see if the computer still works.... yep

then I checked to see if my silicone was cunductuve, which, thankfully it was not.

so, next step: see if there is a fuse in the Power supply:
http://img254.imageshack.us/img254/760/fusexc2.jpg
yes there is (oh yeah, there was a fan in it... sorry)

remove the CPU fan.. I won't need it anymore (hopfully)
http://img339.imageshack.us/img339/153/fanxw2.jpg
done

install a modem... who knows... I might wanna network this thing with some P1's I have lying around...
http://img475.imageshack.us/img475/2551/modemgp3.jpg
(oh my god, it take's one of those old black thingie's... I don't even know what there called anymore.

now. my mobo is ready for some silocone:
http://img410.imageshack.us/img410/1345/step1sj3.jpg
all innocent looking:twisted:

cover some of the vital holes:
http://img410.imageshack.us/img410/2189/step2jy4.jpg
I feel like I'm in kindergarten again...

a bit more
http://img238.imageshack.us/img238/3941/step3hg9.jpg
man this stuff is sticky...

a bit more still :D
http://img467.imageshack.us/img467/3631/step4pd2.jpg
Mmmm... looks like whipcream.. yum

now I'm waiting for it to dry before filling in more hole's

This is so nutty its cool.

Im pretty sure the long brown slots are ISA's or EISA's. old 486's used to have an addition in line with them which was a lighter brown color. Those were for the VesaLB's if my memory serves me correctly.

well its to late now, but do you know if that silicone is safe for fish?!?!? you have to use fish friendly silicone. something like this...
http://www.amazon.com/Aquascape-Black-Fish-Silicone-Sealant/dp/B00069UDBG

but that is a very cool idea. plus the heat from the cpu can act like a water heater

+rep for trying this... and good luck finding all the leaks..

Nick_Black
03-12-2007, 06:51 PM
thanks evryone so far! but I will have to wait till tommorow before working on it much more (it's a thick coat... so it'll take a while to be workable dry.)

and as for "fish safe silocon" crud.... oh well... maby I'll add a layer of fish safe stuff to it or something...

know what else is fun? playing baseball in the middle of a very large field with a rusty steel bat in a thunder storm lol

ps i will give u a ****load of +rep if this actually works

im sure you have alot of positive reinforcement about this whole idea but i do wish u the best of luck on such an endevour i would vote your case for mod of the year if this does work dont let me down man:D

OOooh bonus, I love reps.. and if not... well It'll be a nice fireworks show... :D

anyway this is what I've got done for today:

started cutting:
http://img293.imageshack.us/img293/2548/compcase001ms9.png

done the cuts (though there not the greatest....) :
http://img162.imageshack.us/img162/1420/compcase002qc3.png

file's a bit and cleened up a bit:
http://img162.imageshack.us/img162/6906/compcase003zr6.png

this is not the best job I've done... but It'll do for this prodject (I'm not gonna put too much effort or money into this, untill I'm shure it'll work...)

that's going to be it for today!

goodnight!

This is not gonna boot ;)

logicly... it shouldn't... but if you have ever watched junkyard wars... they've made some stuff work that SHOULDN't possibly work...

Lmao, my god... this is the best mod ever. I haven't laughed that hard in a while, when I saw all that silicone... I just busted out laughing.

Now I'm curious as hell, I can't wait to see if it boots or not.

Good luck and thanks for the laugh!

I give you props for something different! Can't wait to see if it will actually work. I like mods using junk components, people take more risks as they don't care if they break them.

Have some bananas... you deserve them for putting up with the voices...

(the only way I can express my chucklyness at this mod)

:edit: You have remembered to silicone the backside too, haven't you? And interjection from my wife: 'What you gonna do if you need to fix it? You'll never get all that silicone off...

:edit 2: For clarification, it's against the rules for animated .gifs in sigs, but OK in posts?

rendermandan
03-13-2007, 10:16 AM
Interesting Idea you have there. Have you considered the weight of the water that you will be adding. Hope you don't ever want to move the case as you will need some hefty handles on the top! Also, how are you going to seal the case door shut?

Nick_Black
03-13-2007, 01:34 PM
BerticusPryme:
Thanks :D I'll take that as a complement :D:D

SnowFire
making people laugh make's it all worthwile :)

chaksq
egg sackly I would never have done this with a new boeard :D:D

Drew
first I was crazy..now I'm mental... AWSOME!!! (yay! I love bannana's :D)
and I won't need silocon on the back becouse I'm gonna seal it up around my mobo so no water will get to the back. and as for your wife: she's perfectly correct. in fact I made a booboo, the conector for the power button... I forgot to plug in... oh well, I'll just soder it on via the back...

and I think there afraid of people having verry intense animations in thier sigs..

rendermandan
this slow of a computer? nah, I don't see why I would ever need to move it...

Picture's of progress should be up soon!

Nick_Black
03-13-2007, 05:01 PM
ok, I'm not as far as I thought I would be... (I cant find any ruddy solder...)

but anyway, I know the side's are going to be closed, so I had to open the top:
http://img113.imageshack.us/img113/1417/image1od0.jpg
http://img113.imageshack.us/img113/4403/image2tiffgz3.jpg
http://img113.imageshack.us/img113/341/image3tiffns4.jpg
it is not too neet, but I'll probably throw some fiberglass around the edges...

and becouse I messed up on the power button, I'm gonna have to soder it via the bottem... and to make it look cool (and hopfully a bit more water tight) I'm feeding it thrue a tube.
http://img341.imageshack.us/img341/1856/image4tiffkw6.jpg

and I was origianally planning to cover evrything in my case (including the case itself) with fiberglass (well... more specifacly fiber paper... but none the less)
it turns out I was too poor to buy the epoxy. but I found this stuff for dirt cheep:
http://img131.imageshack.us/img131/212/image5tiffbk2.jpg
I tried it on some cardboard, and it seems to do the trick.

so now it looks like my case will be paved with asphalt :D
(this stuff is sparkally too :D:D:D )

Spawn-Inc
03-13-2007, 05:14 PM
how do you plan on covering up the back of the mobo?! and then once its covered how to you plan on attaching the mobo to the tray? i'm trying to pull for ya but i forsee ALOT of problems.

Nick_Black
03-13-2007, 06:07 PM
the thing is... I'm NOT covering up the back of th mobo...

what I'm planning to do is this:

This is the side (cutaway) view of the original mobo and the case.
http://img479.imageshack.us/img479/9153/side1iq9.gif

and this is where I am now (mobo is coverd in silocone)
http://img337.imageshack.us/img337/7263/side2eu0.gif

then I fill the gap between the mobo and the case:
http://img259.imageshack.us/img259/8013/side3ln7.gif

then EVRYTHING gets a layer of asphalt (I don't want the case too rust..)
http://img259.imageshack.us/img259/908/side4zl8.gif

and than, simply fill it with water:
http://img115.imageshack.us/img115/5055/side5th8.gif

and VOILA!

now I'll leave you guy's (and girls) in awe at my AMAXING (yes.. with an X) fireworks skills!

tybrenis
03-13-2007, 07:55 PM
Keep in mind that silicon like that takes about 2 weeks to set up. While it might be cool to the touch at first, you might end up with a mess of goo if you fill her up too soon.

EDIT: I found you this article:
http://forums2.gardenweb.com/forums/load/hypertufa/msg1217385422593.html

The problem you might have is that silicon will form a skin on the top and bottom and those will cure while the middle is still gooey and uncured. As soon as you break that skin and get water inside the goopy part, you're going to have a mess. This guy recomends using a bit of actrylic paint and glycerin to add moisture to the mixture to allow to to cure within a day or so. Otherwise it might never cure in layers over 1/4" thick.

Nick_Black
03-13-2007, 09:16 PM
!^%#@%!@!$%!@ I could have used that info yesterday... I was wondering why it was taking so long 2 dry... the bottle never said how long it would take to dry.... crud oh well

XFOX: here's your update.

chaksq: I hope I CAN pull it off....

ok... update time.

since I couldn't find any solder I had to scrape some off an old project of mine (a simple 1.5W tube amp thingy I made 3 years ago or so...)
http://img474.imageshack.us/img474/8675/soderqx7.jpg

i used some hot glue too keep it in place:
http://img155.imageshack.us/img155/5240/hotglueit7.jpg

I put the mobo in the case and added more silocone
http://img139.imageshack.us/img139/3502/moresiloconwb3.jpg

and I'm starting to hate working this stuff.. it's sticking to evrything..
http://img367.imageshack.us/img367/8747/stickyfz2.jpg

and to prove I've TOTALLY lost my mind, cardboard and ductape, yup can't have a good mod without ductape :D
http://img143.imageshack.us/img143/7936/ducttapeda7.jpg

that's it for today, stay tuned for another update tommorow (hopfully)

Edit: oh yeah... as you can probably tell neetness is not egsactly my primary concern...

tybrenis
03-13-2007, 09:25 PM
Wow. That will never dry, lol. Maybe some heat will help it along. Well, I know heat will help it along. But you might need a lot, I don't know how much exposure it will take. Perhaps a heat gun is your best bet.

Overclock it! :D
Good luck man!

I was plannig to, but this is an old board... I would need to change some jumpers... which I can't anymore, but maby I'll run it a bit without water in it, than light a fire in it, before I put water in it (no, suprisingly I'm not gonna light it on fire, I was bieng sarcastic there)

but hopfully the asphalt will give it a good enough shell....

well, cya tommorow!

Nick_Black
03-13-2007, 10:08 PM
Oops, I lied, i do have another update 4 you

IT'S ALIVE!!!! I just quickly hooked it up and IT BOOT'S! (oh yeah, it's a faster comp than I thought, it's a 333Mhz...)
anyway I booted all the way to windows! (than I turned it off...)

but I'm suprised it's made it this far...

oh yeah, I forgot to mention, It won't have a floppydrive becouse i forgot to install it when I was putting in the silocone... oh well less wire's to worry about.

IT BOOTS

Wow!

Um ok.

Question wont the north bridge overheat and fizzle out as it is covered in silicon and has no airflow.

So are you gonna have the water circulating through a radiator or just a big tank of water with a PC in it?

By the way the cardboard is gonna go soggy.

+rep as this rocks.

Drew
03-14-2007, 05:45 AM
Hahaahahahahaaaaa...

Hehehehehehehheeheee....

Mwahahahhaaaaaaaa......

Silicone, duct tape, cardboard....just keeps getting better. Need some cable ties though, it'll never work without some cable ties.

Absolute mental crazy genius - in the same league as Defyant and Crison IMO - but for completely different reasons.

Fair play for sticking to your guns when loads of people said it'd never work.

And if the northbridge does go 'fzzzzzzzzzt....' you'll know what to do with fish tank mod part 2 wont you.

More bananas because you crack me up.

jusk a quick sneek peview of how it;ll look with the door closed:

What's this!?? a measuring tape?? that almost seems reasonable!
http://img375.imageshack.us/img375/6898/image3tiffwa0.jpg

what? plactic? like a pool lining? thats almost LOGICAL!
http://img172.imageshack.us/img172/5883/image4tiffyl4.jpg

yes, I'm planning to make a lining for this (becouse I ran out of silocone, and didn't wan't to wait 2+ weeks for it too dry...)

but don't worry, I'll leave the CPU and the southbridge exposed. :D
I haven't gone completly sane...

CHIMAERA: I'll be looking forward to seeing that :D (and I would love to hear how your laptop got in the fridge... :D:D) and no worries, I'll have a fire extinguisher ready. :P

mellojoe: me? insane? no way...

chaksq: I'm too cheep to use real lining, so this is just a plastic bag from some water-softener salt.

Drew: I agree, plus I feel like I'm cheeting using it, but since I ran out of silocoe, this is the best I could come up with...

I'm trying my best to find a place for them (well, it already has some on the power cables... but I'm planning to use some twist ties, couse I can't find any cable ties)

this thing (hopfully) should be ready to hold water tommorow, or the day after.. though don't hold me to that.

(amd 2400+ 1.8Ghz down to 533Mhz) and i couldnt adjust the system clock outside of windows..... i had to stick it in the freezer to do so lolz....
god shall damn emachine....
but meh... laptop was free ($1100USD value) so im not rly complainin lolz....... im thinkin of some way to route water thro the stock lappy heatsink to cool it... so crazy.... it just might work... :P :D

CHIMAERA: that's odd that it overheats so fast? sounds to me like the thermal paste is not put on right (happend to me once..) and hehe:D I've done a similar thing once, just used an old heetsink and made it into a watercooling block... I'll be watching you, I'm curios how your planning to pull it off :D:D

DaJe: first I'm going to see if this thing will run before I put in any fish :D

Drew: I LOVE YOU MAN!! lmao! :p thats odd though that linux won't run mp3's.. when I had SUSE it ran them just fine... hmmm, maby I'll send you a Wav file or so... if you want.

Drew: Install VLC Player to listen to MP3's. It's in the Ubuntu add/remove. :)

Nick: Sorry for the delay on the pics, work is crazy, and I'm not sleeping much atm. I'll grab pics at lunch today.. 2.5 hrs to go!

Chimaera: Is it an E-Machines laptop by any chance? I had one do the same thing.. constant overheat. The problem is that the heatsink sucks, and the fins are so tight, that ANY amount of dust will block. The answer is to remove the keyboard, then the cpu fan, and blow it out from the inside.

Maybe Nick and I should do I TBCS theme song? :D

Lukifer122: actually, that dosn't sound like a bad Idea... PM me your e-mail and we'll talk (wheather the admin's like it or not...)

Yup.. except mine was given to me by the previous owner AFTER the damage was already done. As I mentioned.. if you take it apart and blow out the heatsink from inside, it apparently helps (according to numerous resources online that hate this thing). :D

dude you completely and totally stole my idea, but i was going to seal it all up with ducttape then use a layer of silicone and make the whole window plexi

you know if my school will"donate" a couple of their old computers ill do this, but ill probably use expanding foam, less expensive, less sticky, but still have to apply in layers. then cover in caulk
