Since the board isn't that busy at the moment. I decided to throw up a poll.

Vote for your favorite poison Beer, Wine or Spirits.

Please only over 18's as I do not condone underage drinking.

Feeling a little bored are we?

What is spirits? Is that like Smirnoff or something?

Wouldn't it be cool to take a bunch of booze bottles and melt them down and then form it into a glass computer case? Now thats recycling!

Maybe

At least its not a thread about urinals.

Yeah Spirits as in Vodka, Gin, Rum etc.

Glass computer case would be cool. But would way a lot and would be fragile. As there would be lots of holes in the glass for fan holes and screw holes.

not-so-hardcore spirits pretty much all the way for me (kahlua, grand marnier, triple sec, stuff like that). once in a while i venture into the wine world, but it doesnt taste that great to me. beer just makes me gag, so i dont touch it.

Spirits are hard liquor traditionally.
If it's not beer/ale/lager or wine/champagne, then it's considered a spirit.
Even schnapps is being called spirits, which is a sad thing. Liquor is hard, strong, and isn't supposed to taste like pineapples, watermelons, or peach fused with mango. Get some skill to make a mixed drink. Don't buy some 30 proof store-bought bull****.

I don't drink often. I have about 4 to 6 beers a year and a couple of times a year I have 2 fingers of whiskey.
Alcoholism and addiction run through my family. I limit my vices now that I'm more mature.
Oh, and the drinking age isn't 18 here. It's 21.
In Ontario, it's 19.
It varies in different places around the world.

I enjoy white ales, or beers that aren't heavy on hops. I'm not a fan of the stout, bitter taste that most people like from most heavy beers.
Of the American style of beer, I enjoy MGD and Budweiser.
Of other styles, I enjoy Heifeweizen and White wheat ales.

Whiskey I'm a little more picky on.
I prefer stout with strong taste and little burn.
This describes most bourbons that are aged.
Ezra Brooks that is opened and aged for a couple of years becomes good and smooth and is still cheap.
My mainstay for whiskey is Wild Turkey, which is a rye. I don't drink it often anymore though. It's a good drunk for me, but it's not something I sip.

The longer whiskey is aged, the smoother it is and the more woody it tastes.
Pike creek whiskey is a good selection for a novice to whiskey. It's direct, and still flavorful without a heavy burn.

I'm 23 and I've seen enough alcohol abuse to give advice to future drinkers.
1. Know what you can tolerate. Only exceed this with someone who is mature and sober around and who is willing to take care of you when you get sick, because you will.
2. Drink in a SAFE environment. If you can't sleep there, don't drink there.
3. Bars are expensive. Expect to spend money.
4. Buying someone a drink is not an invitation to bug them all night. Spend a little cash and let it be. You will get better results by not pressuring or annoying them. Most people will at least thank you and chat for a few minutes. Don't be indignant about it.
5. Never drive drunk. Never. Never. Let me say it again. NEVER. You're not a good driver, it's not safe and it can mess up your life or kill you. Don't do it.
6. Only drink while feeling good. Alcohol is a depressant and doesn't help your outlook while in a foul mood. Judgment is a vital counterbalance to emotional distress and alcohol first major mental effect is impairing judgment. It's why people are angrier, stupider, sadder, lonelier, happier or more celebratory when they're drunk.
7. Enjoy.

Looks like we're all spirit heads...cool.

BTW, I once experimented with drink driving (on private land (an empty caravan park in the middle of winter) ) and found it a valuable experience.

Apart from this one time I had never, ever drink-drove (?) and never shall, I just wanted, like I said, to experiment.

So, from personal experience - DRINK DRIVING, ALTHOUGH AN INTERESTING EXPERIENCE, IS NOT A GOD IDEA.

Although I did not crash, I knew I was impaired, and my reactions were not what they should have been. I think that appreciating the fact that I was in no fit state to drive was the biggest factor in my caution... however I have known people consume a lot more than I had that night, and said 'nah, I'm fine'. Tossers.

I can't remember what the point of this post was, but I may have made it.

I do not condone drink driving, and personally think that the limit should be lower, and a 5yr ban, then a lifetime ban should be minimum punishments applicable.

IF YOU DRINK AND DRIVE, YOU ARE A MORON.

It's a very sweeping generalisation, but I stand by it. If you drink and drive, and frequent this forum and are offended by that remark, I offer no aplogy.

:edit: Sorry, number 5 got to me.

I voted beer.

To quote AirBozo's signature:::

"You can't be a Real Country unless you have a BEER and an airline - it helps if you have some kind of a football team or some nuclear weapons, but at the very least you need a BEER."...Frank Zappa...

Beer. Yum!

Other than that, spirits are good (I like whisky and Puerto Rican rum).
And wine... wine is good.
Diferent tastes... different areas.
Wine is very, very interesting.

Interesting side-note, now that you guys mentioned the 'legal drinking age'. In Puerto Rico, it's 18...
Interesting enough, many places require you to be 21 in order to gain entrance.

Cheers mates!

OK First off, Drinking and driving do NOT mix. Even after one beverage you are NOT able to operate a motor vehicle. "."

I voted for beer, but only because my favorite alcoholic beverage at the moment is; Blackthorn Hard Cider. Imported, fresh from the keg in my kegerator out in the shed. My local Liquor store keeps a fresh one in their refer just in case mine runs out. I also brew beer with my neighbor and usually go for the IPA styles. At the moment all of my beer kegs are empty (and have been for over a year).

Single malt scotch is my next favorite. I prefer the peaty ones like Lagavulin and also drink Laphroaig and Talisker. MMM, definitely an acquired taste.

Since I live a stones throw from one of the best wine regions in the world (2 really), I also have a taste for wine. I prefer red wines and absolutely LOVE port wine. My Mother-in-law gives me a different bottle of port every year for my birthday and I love her for it! (not those cheap $30 bottles either...) This is one of my favorite local ports; http://www.pragerport.com/ Great people too. The only place that I got to taste a $300 bottle of port for free.

All of this makes me sound like a lush, but I only drink in moderation. In fact in all of my years of partying, I have only twice drank too much for my own good (both times while in the navy).

Question for people in other countries; Are you allowed to brew your own beer or wine? And if so, how much?
In California, I am allowed 100 gallons per year for me, or 200 gallons/year if two adults live in my house. (some states are different) My neighbor and I usually produce ~45 gallons per brew session and we brew 2-3 times a year (not in the last couple of years though, due to an operation I had that changed my pallet).

Here in Canada you can brew your own. I'm not sure about quantities though, but my sister often makes 5-10 batches at a time, 5 imp. gallons each.

I started as a spirit drinker (at age 15) and drank myself into a near liver failure by 16. Doctors told me to slow down or die. So yeah.. I slowed down a lot. Didnt drink again until I was 19 (drinking age here in Alberta is 18) and I realized I like the taste of beer.

I agree with the statements about knowing your limits, as I know that if I start drinking, it can be hard to quit. A cold beer on a hot day is nice, but nothing satisfies like a vodka after a good meal. :D

When I was in Russia, I had a chance to try all kinds of vodka. It was tough, but I managed to sample probably 10-12 brands without getting carried away. :D

Best vodka I had there was Stolichnya, which is here in North America now, but I recently tried Grey Goose, and DAMN is that something else. :D

If I partake of spirits, it would be Crown Royal.

I'm a bit of a vodka fiend myself....
As the 23 empty litre bottles of the stuff (ranging from absolut to Vladivar) on my windowsill suggest, I drink a lot of vodka. I'm only 17 but have been flairing for around 3 years now. If you don't know what flairing is, watch the film Cocktail! :D It's where you flip throw catch and stall the bottles/shakers/glasses etc.

I've got this natural instinct for which flavours to mix, My mixology is all completely improvised and I've never learnt any proper recipies which has gained me the nicname of 'The Shotmeister' in my city!

Favourite shot?

You will need:

shot glass

Good quality vodka (If you can't afford any better go for Vladivar, it's cheap and easy.)

Good quality Sambuca

Tabasco pepper sauce (NOT the mild stuff, the red stuff. The original!)

Put the shot glass and the bottle of vodka in the freezer until both are frosted
Get the shot glass out of the freezer and quickly pour just under half a shot of sambuca into the shotglass,
Put 3 dashes of tabasco pepper sauce into the sambuca and watch it float on top.
Then, get the vodka out of the freezer and using a pourer (you can buy a pourer from any supermarket - tescos in the uk sells good plastic ones!) pour the vodka into the shotglass but pour it down the side of the glass slowly! Do this very slowly until the glass is almost full.
wait a few seconds then hold the glasss up to eye level and marvel the beauty of the Flatliner! You see, the sambuca and vodka are clear, you will get clear underneath, clear above, and a red line of tabasco through the middle

This shot will blow your mind! And your mouth. But it tastes so damn good and is a great one to impress!

Also for those hardcore vodka drinkers here, try a shot of ice cold jaegermeister with a few dashes of tabasco - That's also good!

For those who want to try vodka for the first time, I suggest trying an ice cold shot of caramel infused vodka, it's gorgeous but vodka NEEDS to be drunk ice cold, or it will be disgusting.

Freeze a shotglass, freeze vodka, keep

Sigh* the kids these days

Australia has some great wines that get exported all over the world. I am a couple of hours drive away from a large wine growing area. Also south Australia makes some great wines to. My dad collects wine. About 5 years back he built a wine cellar under the house with space for about 260 bottles but the collection has to be constantly restocked. ;)

ya i found that out the hard way.

actually speaking of mixing drinks, i do that too. i just dont use really hard stuff. my specialty is "sleeper" drinks. the kind you dont realize have much alcohol in them until you whack your head on the back of the couch trying to sit down.

two good milkshakes:

-a modification of my nutella milkshake: three scoops of ice cream, half a cup of milk (whipping cream can be substituted here to make it really frothy), two spoons of nutella, two or three spoons of chocolate syrup, a splash of vanilla, and as much kahlua as you want. me and my friends refer to this one as "electric dirt" now because it looks like mud, but has a bite.

-a minty one: a few scoops of ice cream again, half a cup of milk, 4 or 5 shots of creme de menthe, and a spoonful of cinnamon or ginger if either are handy. it is now known as... MINTY MADNESS.

huray for vodka! and yes it needs to be ice cold. i keep my in the freezer all the time. same with rum, for the most part. i'm not sure if this has been thought of but i made it and called it the Canadian sunset. here is a picture
http://myspace-254.vo.llnwd.net/01139/45/25/1139205254_l.jpg

its maple syrup, either peach or orange juice and any vodka. its good accept the maple syrup is to thick. so it take a bit for it to pour out. i was trying to make those layered drinks and it came out cool like that.

My Parents still take jabs at me for my belief that Budweiser was indeed king of beers. Once I had a _real_ beer, I cannot even drink the mainstream American beers anymore (REAL beer does NOT contain rice...).

Funny thing. My neighbor is a certified Zymurgist, has won awards for a couple of beers he has made and his favorite beer is still Coors...

I also have my Jim Beam with Vanilla Coke for a slightly different flavour now and then.

Australia had a few different Coke varieties for a while. Cherry Coke (bile from the Devil's stomach), Coke with Lime (****e) and Coke with Lemon (I'd imagine urine would taste better).
I think the Australian public agreed with me because they dropped them all.
