Subwoofer mod question!
Ok since I have been looking around the house to cut stuff up and mod it I thought about my subwoofer speaker.

So heres the question(s).
When doing this do I just get 4 pieces of Plexiglass and screw em together, or do I make a small metal frame so that the pieces of Plexiglass could be attached?

I thought the metal frame would work well so it would be secure and that way you could counter sink the screws to attach it all together. I was thinking Plexiglass so that way I could put in some perty lights and make it glow.......

Any ideas or suggestions?
Go easy Im still new at this and im only using my brain to think out what I wanna do.

It should be able to hold fine. You'll probably just need to use some nuts on the screws for the subwoofer to keep it mounted to the plexiglass. Though I'm not sure if you'll want to attach the sides together with just screws and a threaded hole in the plexiglass. I'm not sure how well that would hold. I lost track of what I was just saying. So anyways, make sure you have a hole to let the air escape.

Is a hole strictly necessary?

Some sealed boxes sound lovely... or have I missed the point and you were talking about a vent to stop the air pressure from blowing the box open?

I don't think most boxes actually have the speaker sealed inside of it and those that do have a port or vent. I could be wrong though.

Edit: do you mean something like this http://www.hometheaterhifi.com/volume_9_3/velodyne-spl-8-subwoofer-8-2002.html

I give you exhibit A, m'lud.

:p

From my days playing with in car audio I believe that a ported sub box will drop lower, but a sealed box will be tighter and punchier. And the port size and shape can be altered to 'tune' the box for different responses at different frequencies.

/cue friendly local neighbourhood audiophile to prove me wrong...

:edit: thats a cool link...and a sealed box too.....

I see what you mean now. lol When i thought sealed i thought u meant those boxes were they will have the speakers sealed inside with like a window to view them or something.

It will blow apart if you don't have a vent hole.

Not true. it will not blow apart. sealed ported and band pass are all options for sub boxes. some speakers only work well with sealed boxed like Infinity Kapa speakers they are designed for use with 1 foot of space in a sealed box. Great for tight areas.

Agreed, I have built many sub-enclosures and have tried both ported and sealed. Sealed have sounded better in almost every situation that I have experienced. Also kind of depends on what type of music you listen to also, but have never damaged a box or subs by sealing the box.

Christ on a bike!

I was right!

w00t w00t

Might blow apart if you drive it hard and the box isn't structurally sound though...

OK sorry my fault newbie mistake I didn't go into a lot of detail or pics.
I have a creative lab special or what some may call wallyworld special or
some may even know as walmart.

I think I paid like 50 bucks or something like that, so it wont be a huge loss when I cut it open.
I was looking at it and thought that would look awesome in a clear case, and for me being a newbie a perfect chance to play with the dremel, etc., etc.
There's a blowhole in it already so I thought nothing special to take it apart and re assemble it in a new home but only in clear Plexiglas.

Speaking of Plexiglas goes it come in different thickness, is there a certain thickness that works best?
What do I use to the put the Plexiglas together, is there a method that works best to keep the air out?
Am I leaving anything out? I'm sure I am and since I am a newbie and you all have been so nice to me why not ask the pros.
My friends in the real world look at me like im a fool when I tell them what I wanna do, and they don't understand this is some really addictive stuff!
I also thought about putting in some lights but I don't just if I splice into the power supply, is it safe, will it kill me, and speaking of lights how do I make the lights thump with the music like in this link.

I have a lot of questions and I feel really stupid asking people like you because you all know what your doing. So please bear with me as I make a pursuit into the world of modding!
So were do I begin after buying the Plexiglas?

Many many thanks

Any chance you could resize the pics...they're a bit much....

And you can get really nice spun ally ports just like the black plastic ones there. If you keep the box and the port the same size, it should sound similar but you can't keep the black port in a perspex case...ewwwww that's just nasty...

For what this sub is going to be used for? Do you plan on keeping the original speaker set (5.1) or only want a subwoofer for your car or something like that?

you wan't to keep it air tight for a subwoofer (aparently you can sqeeze out a bit more decible's with a vent, but you loose quite a bit of quality becouse of phase shifts and such...)

you want to use thick matirials for the enclosure.

no lights. trust me. you might beable to get away with led's on a seperate power line but it's best if you don't have lights.

I have no Idea what's the best way to seel plexyglass (but whatever you do, you wan't it air tight. (people around here should beable to awnswer that for you.)

the thing won't blow apart, I've seen 15000W sub systems, with sealed enclosure's that didn't blow (out door's concert)

what would be cool (just a sugestion) is having an eched thing in there.

hope this helps, and if anyone knows diffrent, don't hesitate to correct me.

that site has some useful info, though it's for wood enclosure's...
