Ok so rig is finally build....thx u guys for all your help and input, really helped a lot!
However after going through all the hastle of building a comp for the first time i realised that when i play a game (F.E.A.R, CSS and BF2 so far) it seems to crash for like a second and then the whole system restarts. I was wondering if this is due to a psu problem or a temprature problem???
SPEC:
psu=500w
bfg 7600 gt oc
e6400
p5n mobo
1gb (2x 512mb) 800mhz cosairs ram
Its really annoying. The system is perfect apart from that and it being a little noisy. I just hope it an easily fixable prob!:dead: :?

My bet is on PSU overload, 500W isn't a great deal of power (depending on the amps delivered). If it were a temp problem, the computer usually powers off, not restarts. Try downclocking you video card if possible, and disconnect any unnecessary hardware (including PCI cards is possible) to see if the problem persists. If not, I'd spring for a juicier PSU. Also, there are lots of free downloadable programs to monitor temps while in windows, and you can check them in BIOS setup menu to get an idea if you're running too hot.

would u happen to have any links to these free downloads?

Doesn't Asus include a program called PC Probe with your motherboard?
Can you tell us specifically what PSU you have? Brand and model would be most helpful.

Actually there should be a utility on your ASUS disk.

Whats your PSU brand and model? 500w is far enough for a e6400 with a 7600gt. BFG overclocks all of their videocards (even my geforce 5500 is :P) and its not really power-noticeable.
Core2Duos are the most powerful and the lowest power consumers on the market (considering it as a ratio), so wattage shouldnt be a problem.
Have you overclocked your system, or played with your BIOS settings to improve performance?

Nope not at all :(

No infos on your PSU? look at the label on it, and tell us what brand/model it is, and the amps the 12v and 5v rails can support.

try coretemp, its the best cpu temp recorder

PSU model = Casecom
Core temp reading:
Tjunction 85C
core #0 28C
core #1 28C
+12 V = 17 A
+5 V = 38A

When i play Eve in window mode the highest both the cores go is 41C

I could bet 5 bucks on the PSU. 17 amps ain't enough for a 7600GTOC. You may want to look into Enermax, OCZ, or Antec power supplies. I would recommend one from OCZ tho, with a 600watts you should be okay with that. :)
And what are all the stuff in your computer? hard drives, optical drives, lights, fans, cathodes? cause if there's too much stuff in it, that may explain why it's crashing, due to an insufficient PSU.

So its the Psu with the prob then?

thats you're problem. You're 12 volt rail is 17a. Now i'm not too familure with the 7600, but I know that geforces suck up ALOT of power. I recommend atleast 25a on hte 12 volt, or 25a combined through differn't 12 volt rails.
And ditch the casecom, the PSU is like the heart of you're computer, sure you can go out spend $20 on a generic psU rather then on a Antec, but when it dies 3 months later you're going to be sorry.
Trusted Brands: Thermaltake, Antec, BFG Tech, Silverstone, Enermax...Few more but those are off the top of my head. Go for ATLEAST 500 watts, and expect to spend $80+ for a good psu.
my 2 cents.
EDIT** Ussually the 7600 shouldn't take over the 17A, but you're also running a powerfull processor and such. Thats why you're PSU is getting drained.

Don't trust Thermaltake that much. They are a good brand, but compared to OCZ or Enermax, they are "weaker".
Don't forget that, most of the time, when a cheapo PSU (generic) dies, it should take away with him the motherboard, along with other components. Im sure you don't want to lose all these poweful components... :)

Hint hint.. My "rep" here doesn't cover PSU's?
Even though Thermaltake might be lower quality, it still lasts in the long run. I have a 2 year old 450 watt Tt, works fine still.

Of course I don't say that, Ive bought a Tt for a friend a month ago, but in the extremeoverclocking.com forums people saying that enermax and OCZ are the best ones on the market right now (PC Power & Cooling aint bad too, for bigger wattage needs). Thermaltake is good too, and of course if you don't push your computer to its limits Tt is still a good choice.
Lol, im almost contradicting myself compared to my last posts... >_< My Pentium 3 is running from a Sparkle PSU since the last 7 years, the only thing that happened was the fan decided to died on me. PSU shutted down on overheat, changed the fan in it, works perfecly. :)

If i was to get a 600w psu would that dmg my comp in any way?
Becasue i wouldnt be using that much of its power

The computer only uses as much watts it needs. The PSU doesn't.... push.... the power to the components. Hence you could buy a 1KW PCP&C power supply and put it in a Pentium2 and it would run as fine as a Sparkle 250watts (with a much better lifetime)

Im a bit lost as to why this would casue the comp to restart mid game and not at the start

i was using speedfan to monitor my comps temp whiles running itunes, xfire and eve online in window mode and my comp crashed and restarted at 42C with a green tick next to core temps and the rest down blue arrows. Speedfan also shows my +12V as 11.97V :S so it MUST be a psu prob right

It would probably start mid-game because that is when your components start drawing the most power. So things may be fine when your PC is idle, but problems arise when you start pushing your PSU's limits. By the way, every PSU has some ripple. As in, it won't always be 12V.

Softwares don't report correct voltage. The only need to know the right voltage, is by testing the lines with a digital multimeter.
