AVG.
Spybot.
Ad-Aware.
WinDefender (I guess you already have it).

That's all I can think of, there are a few more good free ones though.

In addition to those, you could use zone alarm for a firewall. www.zonelabs.com

Geh I don't use a anti-Virus becuase it won't let me connect properly at Lan-Parties. I only go on a few forums and such, and now-adays, I havn't been hit with a virus in years. Its all spy-ware now. And for spyware, Ad-Aware is the best, Pricey but nothing beats it.

As for me, I do have 1 System, and I use norton. Ugly ass little yellow bar but makes you feel protected.

While we're talking about spyware, etc., is there any way to scan my Pocket PC from my desktop? I tried to get AntiVir for handheld computers, but I couldn't get a trial license, and I do not feel like purchasing it at this time. I believe a virus wandered its way on there, but not sure how.

If you haven't tried it, you can use ClamWin. It is fairly good, and free too!

You say u file share...well u need the best cuz your gonna get every ones crap..
Ive been running my pc 24/7 for about the last 5 years downloading everything from music /movies & software.
Ive tried all the anivirus programes an cleaners & firewalls on the market this is what i recommend you to have for a file shareing problem free experience.

1st... make sure your operating system is completly upto date includeing windows defender an windows malicouse spyware remover.
2nd.. Get NOD32 antiviruse if your file shareing you can easily get a cracked version.
3rd.. Get Adaware to remove your pc from spyware.
4th..Get XP repaire proffesional to fix & reapaire your registry from errors.
5th..Get peer-guardian this blocks the athorities from watchn what u download and it regularly updates ...

WTH do you think he downloads? Also, you think that will stop the FBI from seeing what you d/l? Hell no; if they see you using something like that they're then probably be watching you. Don't give authorities a reason to get mad at you.

Dan, follow what Malicious & sgtm said and you should be fine.

No one mentioned avast!? I tried AVG but I favor avast! considerably more as it seems to use less resources and is completely free. Anyone with some insight please let me know if you have any issues with the program. :)

I'm all about AVG antivirus (free one), Spybot S&D (also free), Windows updates/firewall, and the occasional trip to Housecall (free trendmicro scan).

Oh, and a router. I'm fine. :D

they cant watch u if you have the correct software to stealth yourself...
Dont be fooled bye thinking they can see u.
Ive been downloadn ilegal software an movies for over 5 years ive got a 300 gig HDD full of stuff they havnt caught me and atleast a dozen friends of minewho do the same as me , the FBI arnt interestd in the average joe they spend therr Millions catchn pep who are making money out of pirated software not pep who download for personal use.
If there really wanted to stop it they would shut down every bitttorrent site and if the site is in a obscure region of the planet the service providers can block it from been accessed....

Problem #1: Privacy Act. The authorities cant legaly monitor what you download. Anyone who has been caught downloading illeagal material got caught in some other way. Child porn sting operations and so on.

Problem #2: Net Nutrallity: ISP's cant legaly block anything on thier systems intended for the general public. If they could, they would have blocked bit torrents & P2P programs years ago.

Problem #3: Hustle & Flow: Assuming the Authorities were to break the law to catch illegal downlaoders. No program could stealth you. Everything you download goes through your ISP. Which is where they would look first. Making any "stealthing" program you have utterly usless. Your only real defence would be to destroy the information before they came to your door. After all, if your not in possesion of illegal material, you've done nothing wrong...

You are right that the FBI is more intrested in catching Piracy Profiteers than some 13 year old kid who illegaly downloads his favorite metallica tracks.

My security programs:

Ad-aware SE Professional
Norton AV 2007
Registry Mechanic Pro
GiPo Remove On Boot
Sygate Personal Firewall Pro (the company was bought out by norton and is now what norton uses)
CCleaner

I've never had any problems while using this suite of programs.

The most secure computer from viruses and Trojans is one that isn't connected to the internet.
That is why I recommend Telstra Bigpond ADSL.

Thanx again everyone.

I use AVG 7.5 for my virus protection and Spybot Search and Destroy for spyware. Work fine for me, very user friendly.

I used to use Sygate and norton Corp (USAF gives norton antivirus corp to any military member), but the firewall doesn't support Gig-E. Now I just use zonealarm security sweet. I run Ad Aware every month or so, it never finds anything zone alarm didn't. Zonealarm supports Gig-E, file sharing easily, works well with my linux hardware firewall, I like it.

dan,

I don't believe its possible to secure a windows PC for free anymore and explained why in this recent thread (http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/forum/showthread.php?t=10630) on the same subject.

Until six months ago I was using all the stuff mentioned in this thread. I have for years written guides on securing your PC for free which were widely read and recommended most of the above solutions.

Now, I recommend you use a paid for product. Personally I use Kaspersky Internet Security Suite.

In the current climate my advice is go for a paid product or go Linux. I intend to switch to Linux by the end of the year for everything and have one non-internet accessable windows machine for the stuff I have to run on that OS.

... headed in exactly the same direction calum :)
