My first PC mod project-

This project began with the purchase of a used:

MINI ITX MAINBOARD WITH 128 MB RAM AND 1.3ghz Celeron CPU

off of ebay for cheap.

I don't have alot of artist skill, so my project would have to mostly lie in putting components together in a creative way.

My plan was this - mount the itx board in a wooden base, ontop of the base would go some sort of decapitated ghoulish head. Now just sticking a severed head onto an existing case isnt much of a mod, so I decided I would run some components into the head. One of the eyes would be replaced with a cheap, low cost/quality webcam.

Some other idea which may or maynot come to pass - scary lighting, speaker within head.

Now that I had my plan I needed some addition cheap components to flesh out this pc.

Severed Head (From the Horrordome.com)
Black Wooden Base (Repurposed Photobox purchased at Marshalls)
Logitech QuickCam Express USB Web Camera (The webcam eye- its refurbished, geeks.com)
GigaFast 802.11b/g Wireless LAN USB Adapter (Wireless is cool, and this is cheap enough, geeks.com)
Toshiba MK4032GAX 40GB UDMA/100 5400RPM 2.5" 9.5mm NBB HDD (For WinXP - Refurbished, geeks.com)
4-Port USB 1.1 Non-Powered Mini Hub (Gray) (Only expansions is usb, gonna need more ports, geeks.com)

As I decide to run WinXP off this underpowered machine - It occurs to be that I now have a name for my mod project:

The Horror-ible PC.

It's named for both the horror theme, and the quality of computer that will be produced.

Here are some pictures of components and me starting to mod a bit.

Cutting the head (A freaky feeling):

Thats all for now... Im simultaneously installing and updating WinXP onto the itx computer as I start to make some cuts. The foam is easy to cut but also feels a little itchy so I bet its bad for my skin and lungs.

Comments, Questions, Advice?

Well, if you feel it's bad for your lungs, then perhaps wear a dustmask and gloves when working with it?

This looks to be a very interesting build. Can't wait to see the final project!

+Rep as well!

ok first off thats sick, twisted, and just plain wrong looking. I love it man. It will be really interesting. Just an idea if it has this big cybernetic eye already why not go with a borg kinda theme.

Sweet, that mask looks very cyborg-ish now.

Cyborgs = Cool

I love it when people mod stuff out of horribly outdated hardware. Definately will look freaky. You should program it to control something freaky for halloween.

Welcome to TBCS!

I agree with Berticus. Can't wait to see how this turns out.

If you want any references I would look at some of the makeup done on the Star Trek Borg characters. That might give you some more ideas to incorporate into your severed head.

Cool modding project, can't wait to see what you do with it.

I think it will look less cyborg-ish once I put the some of the external skin back over the webcam. I'll see how good it looks then but I wont rule out the cyborg possibility.

Some quick updates-

I put a webcam, a microphone, and a wireless network reciever into the space I hollowed out. I hot glue'd them to the foam, placed a portion of the external skin overtop, and hot glue'd the skin into place. I am in the process of trying to cover my cut lines with serveral coats of flesh colored paint. If I fail to do a decent job of blending the cut lines- I can always go the cyborg route and place circuit boards ontop or I can make it look more horrorish by adding stuff like blood and stitches at the cut lines. So either way at this point I'm not too worried.

I took a few gambles without testing. Im hoping that being encased in foam has little effect on the wireless reciever. I probably should have tested the microphone in its current position prior to resealing the head. I dont consider these big concerns.

Some updated pics:

From the angle in the next picture you can see the microphone holes thru the opening in the cheek.

I like it, looks like you got the second eye in the right location, otherwise would look bad. I'm "keeping an eye out" for this one!

+ rep for creativity.

I second that. Also, add a red LED to the eyeball that's audio sensitive. Make it scream. lol. Great work. I like.
