View Full Version : Shocks and struts?

I was wondering if any of you have any experience with RC models, or even mini toy go karts and the like... ?
I am fleshing out ideas in my head for making a huge case portable, and one of the ideas I keep coming back to is big old knobby tires (solid rubber would probably be better) and some sort of shocks or struts or something.
Obviously it would have to have some sort of clearance for side removal and whatnot, but I can worry about that later... how much weight can those tires hold up?
Yes, now that you mention it, I COULD go check Google... but I am a lazy bastard.
You want these, you do.....

Jumbo Kongs... mmmmmmmm......
And I reckon the coilover set up on a Hpi Savage Nitro Monster truck would be man enough to suspend it (I seen video of these things taking mahoooooooosive jumps).

Or just buy a Savage, stick on the Jumbo Kongs and mod the case so it's low profile and mount it on the body posts for a 50mph mod........
Yeah. I'm sad. :p

RC Struts, tires and shocks would not be a good choice to hold up a case. These parts are meant only for cars that weigh a pound or two.

... travelling over rough ground at 50mph and landing jumps from 40ft.....
Don't mean to contradict you Crimson (well, I do mean to, but I don't like to), but some of them stiff struts are mega stiff...
And worst case, use coilovers from a 1/5th scale circuit racer.. they weigh like a huge weight.
:edit: A new style lightweight Savage weighs 11lbs. So that you know. :D

So Yes... I want something like those...
and NO... I don't want those...
11 pounds is nice and all, but my Armor weighed 36 pounds when I took it out of the box and that was before I filled it with the computer goodness I call Deus Machina.
36lbs? Oh. hmmmm...
In that case i will have to agree with Crimson... theres nothing R/C out there much bigger than an FG Bigfoot...

But this only weighs like 23lbs - ish.
The next size up I can find are gonna be waaaaay overkill from a kart...

I mean they'll be man enough... but overly manly for this I'd say.
The Wheels & tyres from a FG Bigfoot would probably be man enough though.
Maybe a multi shock setup? Like 2 or 3 smaller ones on each wheel?
Just slingin ideas here...
:edit: How's about these...

or the wheels off one of these...

Says they're like a million dollars a piece, but I reckon that might be a typo... ;)

and a typical ATX case with components weighs over 25lbs. and unless the tires are rated for that, they will squash like jelly donuts.
Mmmmm..donuts.

These mountian bike shocks would work great for a make-shift computer suspension system PC-GT ;) They seem to be selling pretty cheap on ebay at times, try searching "bike shocks".

Consider me taught (I've never had a PC on the scales before).

i don't think those are an option, they can suport almost 80kg
WITHOUT compressing
so unless he builds a 400kg case (one damper on each corner =4x~100kg=~400kg), there is no way to use such things, it would be equal to hard frame so to speak

have you considered doing an airbag suspension? those can be adjusted for the height/ride by simply adjusting the air pressure.
Just an idea.

It'd be noisy as all hell, but I'm picturing one of those air mattress pumps being used for filling the airbags.

For solid wheels, use off-road skateboard or inline skate wheels;
http://www.skates.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=QL%2DOFF%2DRD
For the shocks you could use mountain board parts;
http://www.mtbz.com/mountainboard_accessories/mbs_matrix_trucks.htm
http://www.mtbz.com/mountainboard_accessories/mbs_7inch_wheel.htm
This would also give you the ability to turn it like a skateboard too...
EDIT: I can see a new mod from this idea; Skateboard pc! Surf the web while surfing concrete...
