How many people here are Red Dwarf fans? (I figure if DaveW is a Smeghead, then he's a fan) I've been making my way through the series of it over the past few days. I'm up to series VII at the moment. Great couple of box sets after being a few years since I've seen it

I love how the second gunman on the grassy knowl is JFK. :D

I now have a sudden desire for a Chicken Vindaloo and some Lager...

Ha! Red Dwarf is brilliant! Rock on the dwarfers!

One of my personal favorites is Queeg, that episode is freakin hilarious.

One of my favorite shows... too bad it's only shown at 11:30PM Saturday nights on public television here in the US...

The show is on DVD. Rent them, much better than trying to find it on US TV.

I started watching Red Dwarf a few years ago. One of the funniest UK shows I've ever seen. It's still strange to see Craig Charles in any other roles.

I've seen the entire first and second season and the rest are in my netflix queue. Great stuff. Count me as a smeggin' smegger too.

It's only got 8 seasons. I think it ran from 88-99, skipping a few years of course.

I wanted to get into it, but...never got around to it. The best episode ive seen though is the JFK assasination one.

Is it subtitled over there?

Nah, it's all English, whether it's British or American (which should be called Engrish because they slaughter it over here). :D

Yeah, but I heard that some English programs with strong regional accents are subtitled for American audiences.
And Lister doesn't exactly speak the Queen's English, does he?

I understand them just fine, so there musn't be that much of a need... but then again, some people here speak a totally different dialect...

I will have to rent it now. nil8, how do you like netflix? We have th blockbuster online account thing, and we love it. Is netflix any cheaper in the long run, or faster, or are they both about the same kind of service?

Red dwarf you say? What season is it on now? (need to know to build up my queue)

-Jai

Netflix is alright. If you burn through their rental service too fast (6 a week for
more than 3 weeks), they will start throttling you.
That and their queue program only goes up to 500. Lame. I queue items around once a season and normally do around 50-150 at a time, then let them trickle in.

It's relative cost is similar to blockbuster. I just refuse to use blockbuster because they have purchased censored films in the past and still rated them only for adults. No way am I laying down money for censored material. Take that nonsense somewhere else.

It's really nice to get movies through the mail. Really nice.

I doubt you'll have much trouble understanding it, it's fairly clear stuff.

You guys should look up the American Red Dwarf pilot fiasco. There was supposed to be an American version or Red Dwarf: but the producers, Rob Grant & Doug Naylor, basically got told that:

"The Americans won't like the whole loser in space thing. So we're going to replace your stuff with our stuff. Let's get a handsome American guy to play the lead role!"

Rob & Doug: "umm...if he's a smooth handsome American guy, why can't he get a date with Kichanski? Why is he the lowest rank on the ship? The main character has to be a loser. Kinda the point of the show."

Exec: "Look, this isn't the Uniting Kingdom boys, we know what we're doing."

Much too-ing and fro-ing later, and now the TV studio actually refuses to release the Pilot episode to the media, because the whole thing was such a damn embarrassment for them. If they'd actually listened, then you guys would have your own version of this great show. :(

It wouldn't have been nearly as good either.
I can't imagine a US version of Red Dwarf working, even if the idea was the exact same. It's about the actors, the outlandish sense of humor mixed with the not-so-subtle British wit that made the show obviously, stupidly funny and still tongue in cheek humor.

Ace Rimmer's statement is a great example. Is there an American counterpart to the title of this topic? I don't know of one that would work to the same effect.

Red Dwarf was and still is genius.

Anyone read the books?

There was one set on a 'backwards time' world, and we got a reeeealllly up close and personal description of Cat taking a dump... in reverse... lmao, that was funny......

I agree that it is a good thing it didn't run as a US version. I shudder just thinking of how badly done it would be.

That's the point, it was done really badly. They had such a lot of promise though. They even got Robert Llewellyn, who plays kryten in the UK series, to come over for the American one: they re-arranged the plots so he was in it from series one. Interestingly, this caused some dissent amongst the UK red dwarf crew, who not only didn't get invites, but didn't even find out about the US series until after the Robert returned from filming.
