Ok guys, with my current computer going under the dremel im planning on building the ultimate gaming system:

EVGA nforce 680i
2gb cruicial ballistix PC2-6400
intel core 2 duo E6600 2x2.4
OCZ 700w sli ready psu

and 2x Nvidia 8600GTS(Ultra?)

BUT, ive been trying to gather as much info on this card befor its release so i can be prepared if it aint the real mcoy. Does anyone have any info they can post what they have read? anything thay could confirm?

Heres what ive got:


At the top of the mid-range line-up is the GeForce 8600GTS. The G84-based graphics core clocks in at 675 MHz. NVIDIA pairs the GeForce 8600GTS with 256MB of GDDR3 memory clocked at 1000 MHz. The memory interfaces with the GPU via a 128-bit bus. The GeForce 8600GTS does not integrate HDCP keys on the GPU. Add-in board partners will have to purchase separate EEPROMs with HDCP keys; however, all GeForce 8600GTS-based graphics cards feature support for HDCP.

GeForce 8600GTS-based graphics cards require an eight-layer PCB. Physically, the cards measure in at 7.2 x 4.376 inches and available in full-height only. NVIDIA GeForce 8600GTS graphics cards feature a PCIe x16 interface, unlike ATI’s upcoming RV630. GeForce 8600GTS-based cards still require external PCIe power. NVIDIA estimates total board power consumption at around 71-watts.

Supported video output connectors include dual dual-link DVI, VGA, SDTV and HDTV outputs, and analog video inputs. G84-based GPUs do not support a native HDMI output. Manufacturers can adapt one of the DVI-outputs for HDMI.

NVIDIA’s GeForce 8600GT is not as performance oriented as the 8600GTS. The GeForce 8600GT GPU clocks in at a more conservative 540 MHz. The memory configuration has more flexibility, letting manufacturers decide between 256MB or 128MB of GDDR3 memory. NVIDIA specifies the memory clock at 700 MHz. The GeForce 8600GT shares the same 128-bit memory interface as the 8600GTS. HDCP support on GeForce 8600GT is optional. The GPU and reference board design support the required HDCP keys EEPROM, however, the implementation is up to NVIDIA’s add-in board partners.

So, my last request is, does it sound worth it? the clock speeds are slightly below a xfx 8800GTX... but the 8600 is only 256mb (compared to 768 on the 8800)... but in all honesty, im soo confused and need some help.. the numbers to me mean almost nothing ive lost all idea of specs since dx10/dual core and sli came and shat on 32bit amd :(

Just wait. I don't see why you can't. You have to wait for the cards to be released before you buy them anyways. I'm sure the internet would have the concrete info and benchmarks you need very quickly.

Why run 2 GTS's in SLi? Just buy one GTX.

never buy 2 lower end cards over one high end card.. the only time you build a system with an sli setup is when you get the best of the best, and just one wont do. like gettin 2 8800gtx's. if you arent gettin one of those, then dont get 2 cards.

instead of buying 2 8600 ultra's or something, for lets say...($250-$300 each?) so...$500-$600, buy a 8800gtx for $600 bucks. Much better performance, and room to upgrade later.
