Is there away to use a normal harddrive instead of the standard 20gb one you have to buy as I dont really feel like paying 60 odd quid for a 20 gig harddrive.

Thanks Sir k

if i understand what your saying:

I don't have Xbox 360, but i do have XBOX, My dad put a regular computer 160gb hard drive in it.

I don't know if the Xbox 360 has the same connectors or different connectors in it tho,

-i hope i understood what you were saying.

I thought that Microsoft scans your hardware via Xbox Live to check whether someone changed their components. If something was tampered with, then they would block you from using Live. I heard this during the old Xbox days. Not sure if it was true. But if it is true and it applies to the 360, then you might want to be aware of that.

If you ever feel the need to eventually replace the 20 gig drive within that plastic disguise, inside is actually a SATA 2.5" labtop HDD

really so I could just use an old lappy harddrive and it would act like I was using the proper drive.

Well, not really. The Xbox 360 laptop drive is SATA, not IDE as the older laptop drives. Also, the the 360 does check the drive to make sure it hasn't been tampered with; I don't know how it does this but I know there are files preloaded on the 360 HDDs 360 that does this and possibly more protection such as checking the size or other stuff.

You _might_ be able to switch it out but I don't really know if you can. Remember, as far as the actual drive goes, the 360 uses SATA drives.

Ive read some stuff about this online. There are some files on the hard drive, I guess signatures of some sort, that keep you from using your own. If these files aren't detected the drive wont work properly. I have heard about people ghosting their old drive to new drives, but that requires you to already have a drive AND their is a twenty gig limit, so you don't really get anything out of it.

Do you mean to ghost it to your new HDD?
The 360 still looks at the physical hardware in the case. i.e: The HDD size and _possibly_ manufacturer, serial #, etc.

EDIT: Do you just want to save stuff to your friends HDD because yours is full?

If you give Xbox-Scene some time, they'll probably figure out a way to format new 2.5" SATA HDD's for the 360. It'll happen. Since there's been a way figured out to add a bigger HDD to a normal Xbox, I don't doubt that it'll be possible to do the same thing to the 360 some day.

Yeah. The Xbox 360 was redesigned off of these things. If there is no patch for the firmware, then you will not be able to install a larger harddrive. The thing is, much of the "checking" software is located in the BIOS. You would have to do something illegal (in the US) to put another harddrive in it. You Aussies lucked out (lol).

What are you talking about?

Do you want to replace the 360's HDD or something?

k...why?

*ahem* Anywho, with the 120GB HDD coming out, I dont see the need to add a bigger HDD yourself, when Microsoft is offering it. 120 GB is enough space for any modded Xbox/Xbox 360

Its not that its the price.
