Been tossing the idea around in my head now since the small hijack i made in the n64 controller mod post and I want to start getting serious about the idea. BUT I think instead of using a wiimote I might try putting my gyration mouse inside a gun instead... I have an airsoft desert eagle that was my inspiiration to do it but Ive decided I dont want to ruin the gun (cost me US$100 and is made of metal) so I will likely go get a different one to butcher. I know

:pics:

but I'm at work so I will just describe the plan. I have a gyration mouse at home, and for those not familiar with it its essentially a mouse with a gyroscope inside so you can wave it around in the air to move the pointer. My thought was to dismantle the mouse and put the assembly inside a gutted airsoft pistol. I like to hook my computer up to the projector we have in the living room, and it would be really cool to play an FPS with the "Gunmouse"

The second part of this project, should the mouse work out, will be a keyboard glove for the other hand, so I can just stand in front of the screen and blast away!

So assuming I can pull this off, the important piece is the gyroscope. the laser itself becomes useless so I don't need to worry about that, and from my thinking it would be best to plant it in the end of the gun (the gyroscope comes in a little metal box about 1" square I believe) because it works on tilt, not motion. There is a button which activates the gyroscope over the laser (you can use it on a desk too) that will have to be either bypassed or permanently held down, and I will need to somehow hook the trigger to a left click, and something else on the gun to a right click and a scroll wheel. Any thoughts here? I will try getting some pictures of what I am trying to do when I get home.

Sounds like an awsome idea. For messing with switches you will proabably have to solder in short wire where you want the bypass, and place a switch in the trigger and solder it to the original left click button.

Maybe for a gun you could use a toy gun like a capgun or something.

I had few other thoughts aw well. For your right click that up to the safety or something. And build a battery compartment in the bullet clip so it slides out when you need to change/charge them.

go to malmart and just pick up like a 20$ airsoft, the paint it black, for the scroll wheel, you could either put it into the trigger guard or on the barrel above the trigger, right click could be somewhere near the thumb, or switch the two around

OK, Home now. Here are a few pictures, maybe it will be easier to understand:

This is a Gyration Ultra Mouse. There is a little gyroscope inside of it. You can see on the bottom view what looks like a trigger button. This is what controls whether or not it uses the laser or the gyroscope. I want to take it apart and put it in something similar to this:

Here's my airsoft Desert Eagle. I thought about it and I don't want to ruin this gun, plus its mostly steel and kinda heavy for something that would have to get held up in the air for long periods of time. i will use it as a reference until i can afford to get a plastic gun. Ideally I will do what chaksq said and mount the battery in the clip there, so it can be removed for charging (+rep for the good suggestions btw!)

Here is a closeup of the side. I am going to wire the trigger of the gun to be a left click, and I was thinking about replacing the hammer with my scroll wheel and drilling out a place just under the trigger on the grip for a right click button. As for the safety I thought that instead of actually just shorting out the button that makes the mouse switch between laser and gyroscope i would attach it to the safety, so that when the safety is on, the mouse wont move when you move the gun :) What do you guys think?

was US$130, on sale for 100, and they only had one at the store...thing is nuts, it is CO2 powered and shoots airsoft pellets through cardboard boxes...friend of mine shot it at an aluminum sign and it dented it all up. Its a good quality gun, which is why I dont want to mess it up lol

go to malmart

malmart?

Anyways i have a toy gun at my house that is close to actual size, light and was only around 10 smackeroonies! I got it at the dollar store. According to the size of your rat in the pic, it should fit inside something like it. Check around at dollar stores or garage sales, you'll always find something!

good idea... the mouse is actually really small so if i can get a life size one it should fit

I was toying around with this exact same thing about a month ago. I was about to buy a remote type mouse (I think that's what you have) and put it inside an airsoft. I was thinking the trigger could be left click, and then add the others somewhere close by. If you do this good, I might follow suit and try it myself. +rep on getting me started again.

Ok, here's a quick update. I ran over to Dick's sporting goods and picked up a cheapo spring gun here:

http://www.shadowsofdivinity.net/Gallery/albums/userpics/10004/new_gun.JPG

it is approximately the same size as my heavy duty one but is completely made of plastic which should be easier to mess with. I started by taking the gun apart:

http://www.shadowsofdivinity.net/Gallery/albums/userpics/10004/gun_apart.JPG

and it made a mess all over the floor...lol. There's a lot of stuff in this pile I don't need, as the gun will not be shooting anything once I am through with it. So the myriad of springs and other random plastic pieces got set aside:

http://www.shadowsofdivinity.net/Gallery/albums/userpics/10004/bag_parts.JPG

and I put the gun back together.

If you look close you'll see I removed the hammer. Its where I plan to mount the scroll wheel. the trigger is still there and so is the spring that keeps it under tension. I took out all the firing mechanisms and gutted the clip. What I found funny was this right here:

http://www.shadowsofdivinity.net/Gallery/albums/userpics/10004/weights.JPG

They put a bunch of weights in it to make it seem heavier. without them its light as a feather. I need to do a little research on soldering and look at whether or not it will be possible to remove the gyroscope from the circuitboard, more updates as soon as I figure this thing out...

lol...
well Spawn if you have a Dick's sporting goods in Canada they should sell em. Its the only place I've seen the metal ones. But then again I don't know what stores you have in Canada that we don't have here. I live pretty close to the border though so there might be some spillover...hell I even get canadian TV channels...
