hey, this sounds like a newb question to me.. but.. thats WWhy I'm asking.
what's most important?
Ghz?
FSB speed?
Cash?
I know they all play crutial roles, but I was wondering what I should look at primaraly. (I cant decide on 800Mhz FSB or 1066MHZ FSB...
any info is greatly apreciated

uh depends, ghz is overall speed, which is calculated by multiplying the multiplyer by the fsb, so if you find 2 cpu's with te same multiplier and one has a higher fsb it will be rated at higher in GHZ so it'll be better

sweet, thxs for cleering that up. now. I'm gonna Hi-jack my own thread. I'm on a bit of a budget, so I was thinking of a pentium D, which looked good at first... but reading more into it, it seems to be a bit of a disapointment. so I was thinking, am I better off with a single core?

depends how much of a budget are you working on?

$150 (can) or less, it's for Audio recording and editing. Cubase CAN handle dual core. but I doupt the other programs that I use (gold wave) can.

are you working on a 775 socket?? or a 478

A 775 socket.

All I can say is a Pentium D would have to be better than a Celeron D chipset.
I have the 3.06Ghz chip (533Mhz FSB and 512kb L2 cashe) and it gets flustered if you try doing more than 1 or 2 things at once.
The Pentium D isn't a true dual core chip. It's more like two single core chips glued to each other (simple explanation).
It is supposed to be better than a P4 though. For the price you are looking at, something along the lines of a Pentium D chip would do.
By going with the socket 775 it will at least give you the option to update later.

Here's how it rolls:
Normal:
133 FSB x 20 multiplier = 2660 GHz CPU speed
Overclocked:
140 FSB x 20 multiplier = 2800 GHz CPU speed

i wish something had a 2o mulitplier, that would be so easy to overclock

Firstly, I'd say that in order to use cubase or other audio applications with a low enough latency to monitor whilst recording, you will need a decent processor. I would suggest looking at the low-end Core2duo chips. Providing that your motherboard supports them, I'd go for this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115013
It's $20 over your budget but the advantage over a PentiumD/4 will pay for that 50 times over.

P.S. are you using onboard soundcard or do you have an external audio interface?

i think for your price range, you'd be best off with something like this. its about 150 cad after taxes, and its probably the best for what you want, in your price range.

yah.. id send him that way too if it was a bit cheaper.
its too bad you can't afford a few bucks more. cant beat a C2D right now, even the lowest end one. (considering its one of the best Overclockers)
here is a chip selling for $180 USD or so, nominally rated for 1.8GHz, that will out of the box run at up to 3.2GHz with stock cooling and stock Vcore.
At that speed, it'll outperform pretty much any cpu out, especially AMD"S chips. That coming from a sworn AMD lover, says a lot as far as im concerned....
Please, do me a favour... sell something. anything. sell your kidneys, or your liver for an extra 75 bucks, and get this...

hmm, that might be able to hit 3.2 just because it has a lower fsb and higher multi

ive seen it using 356mhz x 9 multi. so.. ya.. not a super high fsb, but an awesome overclock nonetheless.
and for those who dont know, intel's chips are said to be bottlenecking at the fsb, so.. the higher you get that fsb, the better. (from what ive heard.. im not exactly a intel connoisseur.)

yeah wel i mean ive gotten a 1066 fsb up to 1700 almost stable with the same multi
