Rivets

Looking to buy a rivet gun / rivets...before I go and waste money on a crappy product, what have you guys had luck with??

I bought my kit (complete with rivet gun and an assortment of rivets) from sears.
Like this one but older;

Unless you're riveting a ton, it's not necessary to have a rivet gun. A hand held rivet tool will do the job just as well.

That's what I suggest, but I use cheap tools for most small things. Unless you use it constantly or under severe duress, it will last long enough to get your money out of it.

If you want a name brand & warrantied hand riveting tool, arrow does a good job. I own an arrow hand riveter. It cost around 18 bucks.

WHAT! You mean I don't need a $300 pneumatic rivet gun? DAMN! :) Seriously though...the handheld tool works well huh? I guess I'll have to give it a try. Mucho gusto or something :banana:

I couldn't find my rivet gun last night. But i had some rivets. So i decided i was going to use one pair of pliers to hold it down and the other to pull the centerpole. . I used ever bit of my strenght to try and pull the ball on through there . . Turned beat red and about burst a blood vessel on my forehead. . :D
I couldn't pull it off. .

Put you strength to the test see if you can rivet by hand. :devious:

Can rivets be taken out? (im kinda a n00b)
I was wondering because i have always wondered what is inside kid's toys (the mcdonalds ones) but the things holding them together are rivets i think...
My method was always beat the sh** out of them with a hammer!lol

Yep, they can be taken out. You drill them out.

Also, they are just weird screws that the toys use.

Cool. Yeah I thought they were screws but i dont have a bit for them and my dad said they might be rivets so...

Yep. Just find the appropriately sized bit. It's not rocket science - it seems like one of these threads pops up every week, and theres always multiple pages of answers/discussion...

Well that's good to know now. I assumed I'd need some sort of de-riveter. Or just use the Dremel to cut/grind them. So should I drill into it and then pull it out, or drill all the way through it?

Its much easier to drill them out you just drill the center, and they fall out.
The Larger ones sometime require you to drill all the way through, the smaller rivets just fall out.

Some of them were a bitch to get through, but I successfully de-riveted an entire case.
