Im helping my uncle on his jaguar and we're having some problems:
Its a 1968 Jaguar XKE 4.2 6-Cylinder. The starter is stuck and we've tried turning the engine over but the starter did not become unstuck. Also the solenoid sounds like its just clicking. Anyone know how to remove starter or any other tricks to get it working?

Please help,
Thanx,
Indybird

Kick bbuttt!!!!

We Need Pics!!!!

In fact!!!!
:pics:

Now, removing it...

I haven't worked on a '68 Jag...
But, I reckon if you remove the bolts, and insert a big enough pry bar in there... that it'll come un-done.

Have you tried HAMMERTIME?

Its too hard to access it from the bottom of the car and we'd have to remove the whole intake manifold to get at it. Believe or not though, we actually did try "hammertime"

Dial-up beware!!!!!
Heres the car from the front:

Great car. Needs some new engine parts. Maybe a cold air intake, some filters, clean everything on the inside, etc.

I really need help with the problem I stated above. I dont mean to be rude but I only have another 3 days to work on this with my uncle and I want to see it running.

have you got the bolts off?

if it doesnt come off easily you could try PB Blaster to get it to loosen up, WD40 or something or that sort will work too.

then use a pry bar and a hammer to knock it loose.

Hmmm...

Few solutions:
1. Grease
2. Remove it and clean it (www.google.com is your friend :p)
3. Get another starter (note car in background)

EDIT: Found some directions for general use.

Disconnect the battery negative cable.
Remove the exhaust manifold pipe.
Remove the engine to transmission brace rod mounting bolts.
Remove the engine to transmission brace rod.
Remove the starter heat shield.
Remove the wires from the starter solenoid.
Remove the brush end bracket attaching bolt.
Remove the starter motor mounting bolts.
Remove the starter from the vehicle.
Remove the brush end bracket from the starter, if necessary.

IF I was there I could figure out how to do the short trick to see if the starter is engaging or not. Just clicking usually means dead battery (or really low). I would check the battery, then look online to see if you can find which starter bolts to short to engage the starter. The next thing would be to remove the starter and have it tested at Kragens or your local parts shop.

Have fun tuning those dual carbs... (or is it triple?)

As someone who has worked on British cars a lot, I am wondering what sort of starter it has. Does it have the more modern "standard" type where the solenoid is mounted on the starter motor and the solenoid operation is also what throws out the starter gear, OR does it have a ****ty Lucas design starter where the solenoid is separate from the starter and only works to supply the current.
The actual starter starting to spin up throws the gear back in towards the flywheel.

I suspect it is the second type of starter, but I could be wrong.

I'll keep looking into it...

The reason I ask about the type of starter is those Lucas inertia type ones are common for the starter gear to seize on the shaft and not throw out, or if they do throw out, they don't do it fully.
They are also known to crack and stop working because they spin on the shaft rather than turning the motor.

However, that looks like a series 2 (ribbed rocker cover, vertical radiator instead of horizontal flow and it has an altenator insetad of a generator) means that it should have the pre-engaged or "normal" starter motor in it with the relay on top of the starter.
It sounds like a low votage battery, or at least losing the voltage before the starter. Try it with a fresh battery and let us know what it does.

i would gues is the Lucas piece of crap !

GT40's had Lucas electrical bits in them, especially the head lights, tha damn thing would go blank when you would get to high speed

the gulf team had this happen to them in the 60's, in the le'mans 24h

as for the starter, i'm talking with some guys ove in the GT40's.com forums about it

If it's similar to the '67, there's a 1/4" ring on the stsrter face that aligns the stsrter with the block. Sounds like yours is binding there or it would just drop free when the bolts were removed. Be careful if you heat it with a torch as there's usually grease/oil nearby. Don't ask.

If its a Manual box, stuck starters can sometimes be freed by putting the car in gear and rocking the car backwards and forwards.

from the GT40's guys ^

Thanks for all the help, but we removed the starter sent it in to get fixed. Thanks again for all the help.

Just out of interest, was it an inertia type or a pre-engaged starter with the solenoid on the side?

yeah post a pic or two
