I know I am posting a lot of questions lately, I am just trying to get my bearings before I start modding. I am trying to figure this out. What I want is to use 2 bays, have a control panel for switches and thermal monitors, but have the bay covers open and the panel slide out upon start up.

I found part of my answer. Linear acuators. But I don't know much about these.

Ready-made Miniature linear actuators are hard to come by. You can however use THIS (http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/forum/showthread.php?t=5499) excellent worklog by wannabemodder as guidance for building a design I made for the Doom 3 mod. This is a good start. Making the doors you want is a piece of cake; the hard part is making the actuator.

Would this work if I were to chop it up and modify it?

Pretty much anything will work if you chop it up and modify it, but i don't think that has any motors in it...and you might have to do more chopping than you wanted. For this particular mod i think you're better of starting from scratch.
