You can buy a new computer for 400-500 bucks. I got everything (except the case; I have many of them :p) for 400 bucks. A good PC case costs around 40. Total: 440 bucks for a new computer.

That's not a bad idea. You can get a decent Pentium D or AM2 for a reasonable price. And, Intel is dropping prices sometime soon. Before you buy a used computer, I'd look at some cheap setups that you can build.

gettin a used pc for $400-$500 is easy peasy

surely the real question is, what will you be askin of the pc, just web browsing?....is it for a young child to run some basic educational games? or will you want to be doing intensive gaming/video editing/cad work

buying used pc's invariably mean you will be without warranty/guarantee/support should it go wrong/break (although the combined knowledge on these forums would probably be able to raise the titanic if it were a dead pc)

where i work i refer people to the car<->pc analogy, yes you have a budget but when you buy a car do you just take your wad of cash and buy a car that meets that criteria? u think about engine/mpg/insurance/colour/will u look good behind the wheel and be able to pick up chicks etc etc

not bashing at all just saying there's more to think about than just price, hell i'll sell u a used computer for $400-$500 i'll even pay for shipping.....just dont come back to me when u realise its worth about $50 ;)

GL in ur search tho,

My first 486 PC was used. That was back when stuff was a lot more expensive. I got a new Dell laptop using a coupon code for about $400 after the rebate. That included shipping. As cheap as new hardware is now, I would not recommend used stuff anymore either.

This is no Marketplace. Thats Exactly why I Like it.

My first computer was a Commadore 64 or Apple II . .I dont remember which.
Then I had a monochrome laptop. I though i was sooo cool. :D
The screen was all orange.

Get a barebones system off ebay or something.
And Hook it UP! Proper.

Well I got an alienware laptop but my mom needs it since shes going to a different state just about every month, so im looking for a decent gaming pc. I know how to build a computer but I couldn't find a decent pc setup for under 450. I am looking for 1 gig of ram(decent speed), nvidia 7600 gs, I guess a 5800+ or better, need a dvd burner, 400 watt + psu, doesnt matter motherboard just 5.1 sound on it if possible, 100 gig 7200 rpm+ hd.

5800 is like half the budget.

Yeah. Plus AMD's barely have enough cache to function. Intel CPUs are the way to go :). Also, they're dropping their prices once again. The C2D E4300 is gonna be around 115-120 bucks April 20th.

actually, im glad someone brought this up. i was wondering what actual real life benefit you get from intel's 4mb cache as opposed to amd's 2 mb cache? hopefully somone can shed some light on this situation for me.

Having a higher amount of cache gives the CPU a smoother operation. The threads are stored temporarily on cache as they await the signal to continue on their way to the various parts of your PC. AMD has a lower amount of cache, creating a little "backup" when running multiple/large threads. Small cache, along with small amounts of RAM and low bandwidth, create the "lag" you experience in a game/program.

You can build one of those for $350-$400 easy.

I remember I made a Barebones system with:
Ultra Wizard Case, ECS Motherboard P4M800, and a 3.2Ghz P4 for $101.00 for my little brothers computer.
and that was like 6 months or so ago. Im sure you could get it cheaper now.
Won it all on ebay.

Dvd burners are cheeeaaap on Newegg Like $20.00

If this saves you money bump my rep up still hurting from that banana thread :D

You can always go to an online outlet. The Dell outlet always has good deals.
