i was wondering if i could just put a stencil down then use a low grit sand paper to make a kindof decal that is in the glass because my dremel just broke

That would work as a form of etching for sure, it has been done on various mods and is often used when wanting to diffuse any lighting used.

stating the obvious here but make sure you dont sand away your stencil ;)

show us the results :)

The grit you use decides the calrity, and it can look dramatically different.

And as for me, I wanted all of my acrylic sanded, and to not look sanded. So I sanded it all under water. If you want it to look sanded, just sand it regularly. But, if you want it to just look smokey, with no sand marks, sand it while wet, in running water, or while submerged in water.

For this, you don't really want to use a low grit sand paper. You want to use something like 600-800. The reason for this is the low grit will dig into the sandpaper, scratching it and making it look grainy and line-y. With the higher grit, it won't be as opaque with lights off, but it will look the same with the lights on. Or, you could use low grit and then finish with higher grit.
