I just brought "MaximumPC Guide to Extreme PC Mods" from Amazon without realising who wrote it, Paul Capello owner of this awesome community!
.Maleficus.

Yep, and it's a great book too! It's what brought me to this site actually.

Now the hard part waiting a couple of weeks for the book to arrive on my doorstep ^_^
It looks good; that is why I brought it. Im hoping it might help me with some of my case modding.

^^^ Nah, I think that really means "Thanks for picking it up-- Hope it helps with your projects".
I mean, I don't know the numbers, but this website doesn't run on hot air.
Or it doesn't run in the power generated from our mouse movements.
The way I see it, the $ he makes from the book, is way down from the top of the list of things he gets from it.
Paul knows that the more the community grows, the better.
Now, I should get off my butt, and go mod somethin'!. :D

I wish I got 1/10th of $10 per book sale. Guess you don't know publishing
Canadian Eh?
04-20-2007, 02:41 PM
You mean you get less than a buck a book? What a Rip off!
It's more like 6% from x,y & z markets and 5.28% from a,b & c markets.
The joys of litigation.
My sister is a writer. I know a little about modern publishing.
What I found useful was the basics of water cooling and the lists of items. There was a few things in there that I didn't know existed that have helped me immensely. Like Eheim pumps. If you have the space and the desire, get one. They will not let you down.
That and drooling over all the mods in there, of course. Let's not forget the eye candy.

Less than 10% of authors make enough money from their books to do it full time.

If you don't mind me asking, what do you do full time, Paul? I always wonder where a man such as yourself picks up so many skills and experience etc. throughout life.

not to get too far off topic, but wouldn't it be in the best interest of the writer to negotiate that percentage based on how well their book sells. Take the lady that wrote the Harry Potter books. She would be stupid to not ask for a higher percentage each book she put out because people know they would already buy it.

Haha...i know! I think. Suffice to say that was the funniest meeting i've ever had. :D
EDIT: It's up to him if he wants to tell you though. ;)

I put my money on "Rodeo Clown."
20$, any takers?
-J
My money is on a ninja who does contract killing.
...or maybe he's an alien from outer space and he's here on a galactic safari!!
This question is like asking how does Santa live off of giving free toys to children all over the world, let alone support his wife and elves. Nobody knows, those who ask, DIE MYSTERIOUSLY.

"Earth man, what a ****hole." I though Alient Ressurection was an ok movie, but that line made me laugh. It's a cool line. :D Point is, if Crimson was an Alien, he's bound to give Earth a miss.

That's exactly how it works if you get a hit. Writers normally make a contract to be paid X amount of money for every Y number of units sold. The more popular or in demand, the higher amounts of money you can demand.
It's not easy to have a hit book in America. Not just because the competition is so fierce, but because it's so difficult to get a large amount of Americans to read anything.
If you don't believe me, look at the numbers for the NY Best seller's list. Then look at the Nielsen ratings for the top TV shows. Then look at the top attended films.
Books aren't quick, or easy. This is a big turn off for a good percentage of the population.
Most of us like moving media. We've grown up on it.
Paul works on computers and on movies. I'm sure he has his fingers in enough pies to stay busy.

Just a suggestion. . Why not a contest for one of those books?
Can you get them from Barnes and Nobel?
HAHA, 1) I have the book too, although the last 40 pages are stuck together from an unfortunate mountain dew accident. I you should be able to find them at Barns and Nobel, I got mine at Borders.
But I was really wondering what Paul does too. I'm guessing he works at a starbucks or something inconspicuous. Maybe some movie place...OH OH..hes got to be the old bastard that changes the movie reals at the theater. I can see Paul sitting in a darkened room all day smoking a cigar watching movies through the little window.

That wouldn't explain his ability to be online practically all day.....
I dunno about you guys, but I'm calling it RIGHT NOW:
Paul Capello is obviously a member of the mafia, a secret agent, a bit of a day trader, and primarily a loan shark.

I spent a couple of days away and my thread has turned into 4 pages about something I never even mentioned.
Just got an email; the book was shipped today from Amazon so now it has to travel around the planet to reach me; hopefully by an intersellar shuttle.
My input about his job; is most likly a computer technician or car painter.

I looked for the Book today while I was at the mall.
They only had MaxPC Building a Dream PC.
I asked them to order some pc case mod books Hopefully they do.
Chev - glad to hear about the book. I need to get a copy myself
Crimson - Don't forget, your TPS reports are due on my desk at 9:30 tomorrow morning.

ive got a plan... we all order 30 copies of the book and distribute them to friends, family, people on the street and while getting them into the idea of computer modding, we get some cash flow his way-...
also, lots of publicity ^_^ new mods would be popping up all over, and that would be quite awesome.

Give me $899.70 and I will happily take on this idea and buy 30 copies for my family and friends.

Paul's book isn't easy to get in the UK. I confess that i do not own a copy. I actually did look at books on modding a short while back, and wasn't impressed with what I saw-most of the books started way above entry level and did a bad job in the mods. There was also a heavy focus on 'I made this mod in this way, but i'm not showing you how to do it.'
However, i've never heard anything but compliments about Paul's book. Any complaints about a book called "MaximumPC Guide to Extreme PC Mods" being above entry level would simply be silly, and we've all seen Paul's work-there's no quality issues when he's about.
Unfortunately it doesn't get anywhere near enough exposure on this site. But, as you're all probably well aware, we're trying to whip things into shape a bit so a direct link to Amazon to buy the book would certainly be on the list of changes. :)
