I would disconnect everything you can including all drives (except the C: drive) and see if that helps. It is possible your C: drive is dead too.

BSoD (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_Screen_of_Death)
If I ever see a BSoD on something I own, I'm going to cry. lol

What kind of STOP error are you getting? It should appear something like:
STOP 0x000000ed
Are you running win xp or vista?
In vista you should be able to fix the problem fast using the winRE console. Use the startup repair option, otherwise you can do a system restore from the winRE.
If it is win xp try booting into safe mode first and then if you cannot get in try "last known good configuration" in the F8 Advanced options menu.
Depending on the error you are getting you may have to do a chkdsk /r or rebuild the boot.ini in the recovery console.
Worst case scenario you have a dead hard drive or damaged sectors.
Hope this helps a bit, I have dealt with my fair share of BSOD  .

Well I hope if works for you.
What kind of security software do you have? Are you hooked up to a router?
There is also a slight chance it could be a malware infection too  .
Just thinking out lout :D . If you did have a malware infection, booting into safe mode should stop the freezing and you could get rid of the infection from there.

That screen is only Windows' Scandisk launching sometimes when you had problems with your computer or each week/month. It is not recommended to skip it, just leave it run. Basically, when you see that screen, don't press any key.

yes, he is right.. this is to check for errors on your hard drive.you normally get them if the computer is forced shutdown.. its ment to help with the integraty of the data and make sure nothing is wrong..
if you keep on skiping it then windows will rebook check disk to do the same at start up..
normally there is nothing to worry about and all your data will be fine.
instead of doing that you can run the "chkdsk" command within command prompt i only know that it is supported in windows xp and 2000 and you can do more indepth fixes with the command prompt but of course take longer :(
after you have let the computer run thu this or skip it.. does windows carry on to log you in as normal?

From personal experiences, and memory, but I am not sure if it's exact... if you are using a FAT32 partition it's gonna lead you direcly to the Logon screen, and if you use a NTFS partition it will reboot your computer normally.
Just try it, you'll know how it will work out for your computer.
