I had an idea recently and have already started on the project. I wanted to take my nes and put the hardware inside my computer. I opened up the system, and disassembled it all and took measurements. Here comes the first problem, i cant put it in my empty CD drive slot, so there goes my idea down the tubes. But i had another idea. I could put the parts sideways so the buttons would be on the front, but the cartridge would be on the side. I have already started the CAD drawings and have the tools to cut through the cd mount and the case itself. Is there anything i should know otherwise? i already have a tvtuner and wiring is not a problem. Its just rigging

Hey fisho77,

I have never opened up an NES before, so I don't know the exact dimensions, but I don't see any problem with putting one in. I would just be sure you mount it in such a way so that is not touching the metal in the case, causing a short.

As long as you don't mind messing up something up if it doesn't work out, I say go for it. That sounds pretty cool.

a friend of mine and i were talking about a "NES-ROM" drive. it would be a simple enough thing to fit one in the drive bay using a "NOAC" (nintendo on a chip), which can be found and hacked in a lot of those weird little off-brand all-in-one game consoles. all you need to do is attatch the cartridge reader. Benjamin Heckendorn (AKA benheck (http://benheck.com/),a hero of mine) talks about NOACs a lot.

the trouble we were having was how to get it to run in a window, or even a "bootable" program where you flip a switch and reboot and it comes-up as NES.

a possible sollution to this would to make some kind of cart to IDE (or SATA) adaptor and have that drive dedicated to a PC emmulator.

either way, if you get this figured out, let us know. a NES-drive would be pretty rad.

This is a very cool idea, I'd just like to remind everyone that emulators are a grey area as far as legality goes. If you have the original game, then no problem. Many of those game on a chip systems are in fact using stolen ROMS, and arent licensed properly.

If you do plan on building an NES into your PC, we'd all love to see it happen here. Just remember that downloading ROMs is illegal unless you own the game, so please dont discuss that on this site, or link to downloads.

this idea seems good, if you mount it sideways, you will need to link all the bay covers together (Im assuming your going to have the buttons and cartige loader stelthed or just proud of the bays)

you could bondo then together then cut your holes as required.

hmm. with some creative cutting you could probably put the cart access into the front and mount the board on it end. I'll see if I can get a look at the parts I have downstairs and see where you can cut and how to get the board in. If you have any questions about the NES let me know I've been experimenting with the wiring and such on my mod.

OMG!!! I was just thinking about doing this lol. I just fixed my NES. I went home the other weekend and found it and a whole bunch of games lying in a box that was in the attic from 3 years ago lmao when I moved out. It had been broken for a while and I finally took the time to fix it. I was thinking how to mod it.

Now that your putting it into a pc, I might just have to do a cool case mod for it instead lol.

One thing I want to do is make one cool case. One case to hold them all. My xbox, ps2, ps1, n64, sega saturn, nes, and atari flash back. Right now all the cases/enclosures are separate, I was thinking it would be cool to make them all in one bigger case. We will see I suppose.

Hope this goes well for you. Just take out the nes and just play around with fitment till you find something that works for you. Can't wait to see this.

It's a very very good idea. Are you making the nes powered by the powersupply? seperate cable?

i'm not sure what fisho77 is looking for specifically but ideally i'd like it to be part of the PC, like an actuall NES-ROM drive to play directly off of the cart. there are ROM dumpers but from what i've read they wouldn't work well for playing games directly off the cart. alternatively you might be able to get a good PCI TV card and conect a YOBO or other NOAC to it internally, i'm not sure if TV cards are quick enough for good game play though. does anyone have any XP with playing consol games on a TV card? if you did this though you could pretty easily fit everything in a drive bay. maybe two drive bays if you wanted to use the NES power and reset buttons along with actual NES controller inputs. those YOBOs are pretty small once they're removed from the case. I saw an entire NOAC inside a NES controller (http://forums.benheck.com/viewtopic.php?t=14764)complete with a cart slot on the back. so space isn't really the biggest hurdle but comunication with the PC and the NES system.

I hope to see this actually happen.

Let me get with my childhood friend Ben Heck, he took an NES and built it into something the size of a PSP. I'll see if I can get his designs and maybe we can chop that board in a few places to shave some space off.
