I already said something about my new project when I completed my last one, Mystique (http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/forum/showthread.php?t=6526). My new project, Orion is the successor of one of my first big projects, Nimex (http://forums.bit-tech.net/showthread.php?t=104078). Although Nimex was never completed, it was one of my first successful casemods. It was mainly a showoff case and I went a bit crazy on that project, which unfortunately resulted in a low quality finish. Since then I've learned a lot from my mistakes. Gemini (http://www.core-modding.nl/page.php?al=gemini) and Mystique (http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/forum/showthread.php?t=6526) were both aimed at a high quality finish, while keeping things simple.
With Orion, I'm again building a real show-off rig like Nimex, but with the quality finish of Gemini and Mystique. I have chosen to go with a black/red color theme, using a bunch of red LED fans and a lot of UV red acrylic. Also the hardware has been selected to match this color theme. Like Nimex, Orion will be based upon a SilverStone case, a black TJ07. It's going to be watercooled like all my projects.

Considering that this is a completely new system and I'm just a student, I had to get some financial support. Luckily I found some companies willing to sponsor some products. Many thanks go to these companies for their support.

Corsair sent me some Dominator memory, including the Dominator Airflow.

Naturally the blue is a no-go in this casemod, so the stickers had to go.

http://www.core-modding.nl/datas/users/orion004.jpg

The fans will be replaced by red LED fans and the sides will be decorated with some red carbon fiber film.

My sketchup model of the Dominator Airflow can be downloaded here (http://www.core-modding.nl/page.php?al=sketchup).

I got the red carbon film today. I had hoped it to look better than this, but since I got it I'll use it anyway. Perhaps I will replace it later if I find something better.

And applied to the Dominator Airflow:

I think for small pieces like this the foil will be fine.
Well, knowing you, this mod won't be 1 of the 1000'th stick-some-carbonfoil mods ;) Good luck!

A minor update, the watercooling parts arrived today. There's still some parts I need but this is most of the stuff. I already had the single radiator but I put it there to get an overview pic.

http://www.core-modding.nl/datas/users/orion009.jpg

A list of the parts:
- Alphacool Nexxxos Pro2 radiator
- Black Ice Xtreme 1 radiator
- Aquacomputer Aquagratix X1800/X1900 VGA waterblock
- Aquacomputer Aquatube black reservoir
- Innovatek HPPS Plus pump (12V Eheim 1046)
Also got a whole bunch of compression fittings, some for 8x1.5 Tygon.

Finally, my exams are done (pre-university edudation; I prolly passed). Results will come on June 15th. I now have 3 months vacation, until September. Most of the time I will be working and partying but I'll also have plenty of time for modding.
Here's the work I've done a couple weeks back but hadn't posted yet. The mobo got mounted reverse-ATX. I was too lazy to replace the rails for the tray, so I just mounted it to the back of the case with the screws, so the tray is hanging mid-air. I will fix the bottom rail later on when I'm making cover for the bottom radiator (which creates a double floor so I can route cables underneith).
I also got the new fans for the dominator airflow. I've mounted them but I still have to combine the three cables into one nice cable. The color is actually more deep red than the pink in the pictures. My cam can't handle it.

For the rest of it, I've been busy with the exams, and I've been working on a new website. Have a look at http://www.core-modding.nl :D (still got a few bugs to work out, especially with the gallery)

I want to start working on the front, but I'm in doubt. I know what I want the basic design to look like, but I'm not sure how wide I want the holes to be. The width will affect the amount of holes.

http://www.core-modding.nl/datas/users/orion013.jpg

Should I go with the big design (left - 1.5cm) or with the small design (right - 1.0cm) ?

An overview pic:

My vote goes to the first one. Although, they both look pretty darn cool!

Luke122
06-03-2007, 04:49 PM
Agreed.. both look cool. The one on the right would be more work, but would look cooler. I like the way the cutouts follow the contour of the circle in the center.

Hey guys. I'm still not sure about the front design. I personally preferred the bigger design, but most people keep saying I should go with the smaller design, so I made another design which keeps the middle between the big and small designs.

http://www.core-modding.nl/datas/users/orion015.jpg
See the new design in the center, with 6 bars, each 1,25cm wide, with 1cm spacing between them.

I've drawn each design on paper to get a better feel for the size.

Small:
http://www.core-modding.nl/datas/users/orion016.jpg

Medium:
http://www.core-modding.nl/datas/users/orion017.jpg

Large:

06-05-2007, 10:04 AM
i like large :)

Luke122
06-05-2007, 11:34 AM
Hmm... I think the middle option is the one now.. the big ones just look too big, and after seeing that latest option, the small ones look too small.

It's your mod though, so you should do what you want to do with it. :D Actually.. Orion's belt has 3 stars right? And your ram cooler has 3 fans.. go with the large ones... 3 slots above and below the central opening.. keep that theme of 3's going! :D

Finally, a good explanation of the choice. I haven't looked at it that way before. Thanks!

I've been working on the Dominator Airflow again. I made two strips of mesh to fit the side of the Airflow. These will be sprayed metallic red and glued on. I'm still looking for the perfect color, the local DIY-store doesn't have any nice dark red paint so I'll be visiting the car tuning shop soon.

Luke122
06-06-2007, 01:38 PM
I think that the painted mesh will look waaaay better than the carbon film.. plus, it's actually mod work instead of sticker work. :)

You are doing a great job with this build so far, looking forward to more updates.

What inspired the name Orion?

Koradhil
06-07-2007, 04:36 AM
I was looking for a name and remembered the film Stargate SG1 I had recently seen. I liked the name and decided to stick with it. The project has nothing to do with the Orion constellation other than that. My previous project, Gemini, is the name of a constellation too, and the two are actually neighbors. Gemini is positioned to the top left of Orion.

that is pure sexy, my reasoning on not liking the medium spacing is that it doesnt seem to fit along the res shape, like how the small and large both seem to flow more with the outer edge of it, know what i mean?

Sorry for not updating guys, I've been busy working, organizing some stuff for the coming week and building a website for a customer (preview (http://www.core-modding.nl/datas/users/rtsite.jpg)).

Anyway, I've also had some time to work on the sketchup design. I've decided to go with the bigger design. Now I want the top to match the front panel, so I did some sketchup work. Here's what I came up with:

http://www.core-modding.nl/datas/users/orion029.jpg

http://www.core-modding.nl/datas/users/orion030.jpg

Still no real work done though, and that will stay like that for at least another week. Tomorrow I'm leaving to Friesland (the northern province of the Netherlands) to go sailing for the weekend, followed by camping with some friends until Thursday.

Back with an update, finally. In the past couple of weeks I've had to work a lot, almost fulltime. Thankfully Sunday is still a free day so I've had the chance to work on the front panel today.

http://www.core-modding.nl/datas/users/orion031.jpg

I chose to go with the bigger design. Firstly I taped the aluminum and drew out the design. I started with the holes for the Aquatube. First drill a hole, then saw out the hole with my scroll sawing machine.

http://www.core-modding.nl/datas/users/orion032.jpg

Continuing to the other holes:

http://www.core-modding.nl/datas/users/orion033.jpg

For detail work I used my brand new toy, a Dremel Stylus.

http://www.core-modding.nl/datas/users/dremelstylus.jpg

After filing I temporarily mounted it in the case.

http://www.core-modding.nl/datas/users/orion034.jpg

Currently the holes are rectangular. These will be rounded later, as in the sketchup model.
I've also ordered the acrylic. I wanted to go with UV red, but the shop only had UV orange, so I decided to go with red tinted acrylic. Also ordered a 50cm long tube, 4cm diameter. I will use that to make a custom fillport/reservoir.

Koradhil
07-08-2007, 03:19 PM
This evening I rounded the holes:

I got another question for you. I'm thinking of painting all the mesh in the case, starting with the mesh on the sidepanels, but the front and top will also be done.

http://www.core-modding.nl/datas/users/orion036.jpg

It's red VS black on this one. The Corsair Dominator Airflow has mesh painted red, and I really like it that way. I think more red mesh will be nice, but I'd like your opinion on it.

Even though I had to work all day, I got enough energy left to work on the front panel. The acrylic arrived today, mainly red tinted acrylic, but also some thick clear plates (for custom watercooling components) and a 4cm diameter tube (for a custom fillport / reservoir). I've made a copy of the aluminum front panel onto a piece of red tinted acrylic. I neglected to post that I had done the mesh for the front panel yesterday, but here's the final result. The three components for the front panel (1mm aluminium, 3mm acrylic, 1mm mesh):

Hey guys, I guess you agree with me its time to start working on the project again. I had a break for some time for a couple of reasons, but mainly I didn't have time because I've been working almost fulltime the last month. Last week I got myself a notebook:

Fujitsu Siemens Amilo Pi 2530
- Intel Core 2 Duo T7100 1.8Ghz
- ATI Mobility Radeon HD2300 128MB DDR2
- 2x 1GB DDR2 PC5300 RAM
- 160GB 5400rpm SATA HDD
- 15,4" WXGA TFT CrystalView 1280*800px
- Realtek Digital Audio (7.1 SPDIF)
- Intel 56mbps WiFi IEEE 802.11 a/b/g
- DVD+/-RW Dual Layer
- 1.3mp webcam
- SD/MS/MMC/MSPRO cardreader
- Microsoft Wireless Notebook Optical Mouse 4000
- Windows Vista Home Premium

I'm now mostly working on my notebook, which allows me to take Orion apart for modding. So that's exactly what I did today.

http://www.core-modding.nl/datas/users/orion041.jpg

I love mods that use red, imo it looks better and its rarer to see.
Also my opinions again, but i would paint the fans with a deeper red, In the original picture with them all packaged they looked darker but now the two in the case look almost pinkish.

goodluck!

08-12-2007, 07:18 PM
Yes, the fans are actually pink, but when lit up the lighting is really very deep red, not pink at all.

and you have a nice little site to show off your beauties.

Koradhil
08-14-2007, 11:41 AM
I don't know about home depot or lowes, because I don't know any of these shops (there are none in the Netherlands).
I'll fix my sig :) I changed server a while back and that came with a new domain name..

Today I mounted the new front panel to the drive tray. To do this I took two pieces of L-shaped aluminum and mounted these to the front panel with two hex bolts each. Then I drilled holes in the drive tray to mount the L-pieces. This wasn't really all that much work, but it had to be measured perfectly in order for the front to mount flush in the case.

http://www.core-modding.nl/datas/users/orion043.jpg

http://www.core-modding.nl/datas/users/orion044.jpg

I will have to make a new front for the DVD tray, because the original won't fit. The drive can be opened by pressing the aluminum beneath the DVD tray.

Been working on the CPU waterblock. I started out from the waterblock I made for my previous project, Mystique:

http://www.core-modding.nl/datas/users/mystique038.jpg

This block was suitable for a socket A system, but wouldn't fit on the socket AM2 I'm using with Orion. Therefore, I had to make a new cover plate.

http://www.core-modding.nl/datas/users/orion045.jpg

And after an hour or so I got this:

http://www.core-modding.nl/datas/users/orion046.jpg

The block isn't ready yet, I'm thinking of spraying it black and adding a piece of 1mm aluminum to decorate the top.

Nice.

Koradhil
08-19-2007, 04:45 PM
Ok I designed the aluminum cover for the block:

http://www.core-modding.nl/datas/users/orion047.jpg

The center will be cut out for the fittings to pass through. I will probably spray it metallic red. The aluminum is 2mm thick. Cutout will be done some other day, its too late to do it now.

The boy 4rm oz
08-21-2007, 04:42 AM
I like the alu but that gap to the left of the first nozel needs to be filled with some more alu, would be a different story if you wanted to see the coolant but there is none to see in that area

What would it look like with a bit of mesh in that open bit next to the nozzel? Think it would look sweet.

Sorry for the long delay guys, but there is finally some progress to report. December was a crazy month for me, working 32+ hours a week, next to my full-time study.
First of all, I want to show you the watercooling stuff I plan to put in. I'm building a dual loop watercooling system for Orion, with two Aquatube reservoirs, two Hydor L20 pumps and two radiators (BIX1 and NexXxos Pro2).

http://www.core-modding.nl/datas/users/orion050.jpg

http://www.core-modding.nl/datas/users/orion051.jpg

The SilverStone TJ07 has two L-shaped bars at the back of the case to keep the U-body in its shape. These are mounted with two M3 screws at each side. Unfortunately these were fastened extremely tight, so tight that when I took them out, I wrecked the threading. Therefore I had to make two new bars. I took two aluminum L-profiles, cut them to fit and drilled and threaded all holes as on the original. This turned out ok, even though I ran into some problems which were quickly solved.

http://www.core-modding.nl/datas/users/orion052.jpg
The new bars mounted.

Next up was spraying everything. Here's the mobotray receiving some primer.

http://www.core-modding.nl/datas/users/orion053.jpg

And the front panel.

http://www.core-modding.nl/datas/users/orion054.jpg

Here's the front panel and sidepanels mounted temporarily, to give an impression.

http://www.core-modding.nl/datas/users/orion055.jpg

The back of the case is still empty.

http://www.core-modding.nl/datas/users/orion056.jpg

Closeup, but poor quality due to the darkness.

http://www.core-modding.nl/datas/users/orion057.jpg

Thats all for now. Black paint is currently drying on the motherboard tray.

The res is currently mounted to the aluminum front plate. I hope that this will be enough. If not, I'll have to remake the front panel from steel (which might actually be easier because I can do the steel plating work at school with proper tools).

Thanks for all your support people :D

I've been thinking about the best way to route the tubing. I've come up with a new design that might be better than the previous one. What do you think?

The old one:
http://www.core-modding.nl/datas/users/wcloop.jpg

The new one:
http://www.core-modding.nl/datas/users/wcloop2.jpg

Basically the reservoirs are switched.

BigJohnson
01-17-2008, 02:26 PM
That looks much less confusing and like its going to save some tubing.

Cryo

Scotty
01-17-2008, 05:56 PM
You do realize to get that rad in the separator plate your gonna have to cut it right, i believe its just a little too small for a 120mm fan, i was going to put one there see :)

Depending on the size of your power supply, it's possible to get a 120mm and a single 120mm in the bottom, although airflow is odd, because i have one one side the other on the other side, and the fans on both sides pull air out. You can then shove the pumps on that middle plate, in the drive holder bit if needed, or if you don't have hdd's in the bottom atall the pumps would fit in.

edit:
Like this:

http://img299.imageshack.us/img299/5603/tj07gx0.jpg

But it's a tight fit with a PSU and hdds. But hey it's your mod, do what the hell you want.

Koradhil
01-17-2008, 07:14 PM
The hole in the divider plate is not a problem, I've already enlarged it to take a 120mm fan. The radiator itself will sit on top of the plate, flush against the motherboard tray above.
The problem with having the radiators at the bottom is that there will be at least 3 hdd's (so one cage) in the bottom compartment, as well as two pumps and an ATX-size PSU. Although it would probably fit, I prefer to have ample space in the bottom compartment for cabling and a drainage system.

Koradhil
01-17-2008, 07:45 PM
Tonight I've been busy depending how I will make the first plate for the inner plating. This plate will be positioned on top of the single radiator, right underneath the motherboard tray.

http://www.core-modding.nl/datas/users/orion062.jpg
Drawing is not to scale.

As you can see there will be one big hole for the radiator, as well as three holes for tubing (oops I forgot one..) and a hole for ATX and P8 power. I'm going to try to make this out of 1mm steel tomorrow, using the proper equipment.

Scotty
01-17-2008, 07:52 PM
Ah yea, you would get it all in by the pumps. I couldn't get a tiny Dtek DB-1 in there with it all...

But drainage? What are you! lol

I'm a dutchman, that should explain it ;)
Obviously I meant a bleeding system for the watercooling, with two valves.

Scotty
01-18-2008, 12:04 AM
Now you see, im hardcore, and if i have to drain my system will probably just take a craft knife to one of the tubes.

Ok I did the first plate today. It came out nicely, but first I'll show you some of the machinery I have at my disposal at school.

http://www.core-modding.nl/datas/users/bendingmachine.jpg
A bending machine for steel and aluminum.

http://www.core-modding.nl/datas/users/cuttingmachine.jpg
A small cutting machine for angled cutting.

http://www.core-modding.nl/datas/users/platecuttingmachine.jpg
This cutter is for doing bigger plates.

http://www.core-modding.nl/datas/users/punchmachine.jpg
One of my favorites: a punch machine. This saves a lot of time from drilling.

There are also things like a CNC turner (http://www.core-modding.nl/datas/users/cncturn.jpg), laser cutter (http://www.core-modding.nl/datas/users/lasercutter.jpg) and lathes (http://www.core-modding.nl/datas/users/lathe.jpg).

Modders paradise :D

On to the project. I don't have any action shots, but here's the result:

Hey there,

I'm just here to tell you this project is finally nearing completion. I've been working hard the last two days to get it done for the Benelux Casemod League next weekend. Unfortunately I didn't have time to take pictures of the process, but I got some near-final shots for you.

System turned off, the WC isn't filled yet so I cant switch it on (for long) yet.

The two pumps at the base of the casemod. It's a dual-loop system: Pump-CPU-Rad-Res (top) and Pump-GPU-Rad-Res (front).
