View Full Version : Would this work? (Computer Case Question)

Hey, I'm one of those... uh, beginner modders. So, I was wondering about something, like most beginners do.
I have an eMachines computer and I was wondering if it would be possible to move everything inside it to a new case? I'm not sure if eMachines has specialized motherboards that only fit their PCs. If I was going to get a new case, it would probably be an ATX case.
If and when I get a new case, THEN I'll start the fun modding. (Lights, etc.)
Oh, and if any other information is needed, just say so. I'll post it.

Ya you would be able to do that, but you would have to know what the specs are for your mother board.
Motherboard
Form Factor: ATX,Micro....
Dimensions:--.-,--.-

Alrighty. I'll check and post it.
EDIT:
Okay, here's the Specs
Dimensions:
Height - 9 inches
Width - 8 inches
I'm not real sure if it's a Micro or an ATX. My guess is it's an Micro. There's a little emblem on the motherboard that says "MIC."
Not sure what that means?
One word of advice from lots of experience with emachines.....
I would replace the powersupply on it as soon as you can. I used to work at a computer repair shop and we would get at least one emachines per week where the powersupply has gone bad and actually fried basically everything in the pc. It would at least take out the motherboard, but usually took out the cpu and sometimes even the harddrive when it went kaput. As far as transferring your emachines components into a new case, you shouldn't have any problems, as there is a standard to where the mounting points are on a motherboard and case. There are differences when you are talking about a micro atx mobo though, since they are a bit smaller. But, there will be holes for them. If I'm not mistaken, it should be 8 different mounting points, 3 near the back, next row of 3 by the cpu and pci and agp slots, and 2 near the back, where the power plugs and memory are.

Um. That's sort of scary!
That's for the input though. I'll probably be replacing the power supply!
As the the case information, thank you.
I was hoping the motherboard wouldn't be a problem.
If anyone else has any comments, post 'em.

I think you'll be fine

Yeah, the eMachines I had was a Micro ATX. You can put it in any case really. You'll be able to put it in a Mid-Tower case, really any case will have holes for mounting it.
With your new PSU, don't be cheap about it. Buy one that is a decent brand name, with good reviews and good specs. Don't just buy a 500W because it's $15. I'd much rather buy a 350W for $15 from a good company than a 500W from a crap company any day.
And I don't think anyone else has said it yet, so, welcome to the forums man!

Hey, thanks for the Welcome! I'm glad I found this forum. It's been a HUGE help in my "...How do I do that?" stuff.
Anyone know of any places (either websites or stores) that sell good, but somewhat low in price cases? (I'm in USA)
I'm a big newegg shopper myself. My experience with them is that they are very fast with their shipping and I have had no problems with products being damaged.

Hmm. I've been looking on NewEgg a lot. Is it better to go with a somewhat expensive case, rather a cheap one? From most of the reviews of the under $50 cases, they are very flimsy and have sharp edges. So, what's the price range I should be looking into?

Okay, I think I found a case. It's somewhat plain, but I plan to do some bondo work on it. :devious:
ANYWAYS, would this be a good case? Anyone use it before?
Here's the link (http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?pfp=BROWSE&N=200088+502481&Ne=500955&Ns=display%5Fprice%7C0&product_code=339899&Pn=ATX_Mid_Tower_Case)
I've read all the reviews on it, and they all seem pretty good. My budget is sort of limited for now, but I might be able to get one that's a bit higher priced.

So, no one has seen/used this case before? No reviews? :?
(I hope double-posting isn't illegal...:hurt:)
I wish there were multiple pictures of this case, including the inside and the back of it. It looks like there's either a vent or a fan on the side, but I can't tell if there are any fans on the front or on the back, let alone sizes.
Here are a few cases I have found that are around the same price but what you might be better off with:

This last one looks like it might be the best match for you
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811153028
It has a 90mm fan on the back, but it looks like it can take a 120mm fan, and from the pic it looks like you can add another one in front of the harddrives. Also has a duct to go right over your cpu. Oh, and the price is about the same as what you are looking at.

Hmm, nice ones on newegg.
The second one is a MicroATX case though. I need a Mid-Tower. xD
As for the fan spots, there's 3 total. One in front is sort of blocked though. Nothing some bondo can't fix. :devious: Lol.
Oh, and like I said in my VERY first post, I'll be doing mods to the case. (Window, lighting, etc etc...) I still might buy one from newegg though. I'm having touble deciding, BAH.

Thank case you linked would be a good empty canvas for a mod. While there are other cases that would be good too (Centurion 5 is a good example) that isn't a bad option either.

Yeah, the Cooler Master Centurion 5 case would be good too. Hopefully this weekend, I can head over to that store and check out the cases they have in-person. Weekend Project - Start MODDIN'. :devious: (maybe...)

Hmm. I've decided between two cases.
Here's the links to 'em:
1st Link - Cooler Master Elite 330 ATX Mid-Tower Case (http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?pfp=BROWSE&N=200088&product_code=342471&Pn=Elite_330_ATX_Mid_Tower_Case)
2nd Link - Their Brand's ATX Mid-Tower Case (http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?pfp=BROWSE&N=200088&product_code=339899&Pn=ATX_Mid_Tower_Case)
I do like the cooler master one, since it has that 120mm fan spot on the back (I cheated and went to newegg with the model) and it looks pretty nice on the inside. I like the quick release for the drives. I don't see any other views on the Comp USA one, but if it is set up the same way or similar, I would go for that one depending on how much and what mods you were planning on doing. What mods were you planning on doing anyways?

I'm most likely going to go with the Cooler Master one. But, hopefully today I'll be heading to CompUSA to check 'em out in person.
Pretty soon, after I get a new case, I'll be starting up a worklog. I'm not real sure of my exact plan yet, but I hope it'll turn out good.
Here's some mods I plan to do: (as NuKS requested)
- Window mod(s), of course.
- Bondo work, not real sure of what yet.
- Lighting on the inside.
- Watercooling, ALOT later though. That's pretty pricey. :hurt:
- Others. I'd like to keep some secret until the worklog. :p

I like both. But I would probably go with the Cooler Master myself. I've actually been looking at CM cases for when I finish CS:Server and that is one that I've like a lot. Either that or the Centurion 5. Those 2 are nice.

That CS:Server is lookin' good there, Mal.
Anyways, thanks everyone for your input. I'm going to get the Cooler Master case. All of the reviews I've read on the case are positive. 8)
So, coming up is my Worklog. I just need an idea and a good name for it. xD

Update on my Quest for a new case...
I got the Cooler Master Elite 330 case today. Soon to come ...
My Worklog.
(Closing this thread now, no more help needed on a new case.)
