The kind folks at Apevia (http://www.apevia.com) have donated this case to the winner;

http://www.apevia.com/images/products/X-PLEASURE-BK-10_500.jpg

Take a good look, because the X-PLEASURE case is also the base for this challenge. Apevia has donated the case. It is the X-Pleasure-BK with _no_ power supply. MCE.com has donated $100 to help defray the expense of shipping this case.

Challenge:
The Modder's Challenge starts with the prize. Use the X-PLEASURE case as the base of your design and create a vandal proof computer. Protection from the elements will be provided. The hard part is protecting the computer from the humans. That's your job. Think of it as a public computer with flair. Be reasonable though, Heat guided Taser charges may not be fitting in a public place...

Budget:
Again, keep it reasonable, but keep track of what the rough costs are. Don't worry about shipping, taxes and labor, just the cost of the items.

Restrictions:
The final case must be recognizable as the original. Keep the look of the X-Pleasure case and build upon it. Extra credit for designing input devices and a monitor that fits in with the design.

Judging:
Designs will be judged on the following criteria;

Originality
How well was the challenge met?
Budget
Presentation
Creativity
Buildability *I reserve the right to randomly make up terms... :?

Judges:

CrimsonSky
Airbozo
jbdnsn
gaz_the_chav
tybrenis

Submissions:
You must be a member of TBCS to enter. All submissions must include a description of your design, pictures of your concept and a rough budget outline. These can be as simple as hand drawn or as elaborate as 3d animations with voice over by William Hartnell. Remember to elaborate on specific details. All submissions must be in electronic format (as attachments).

Please submit your entries to:
challenge@thebestcasescenario.com

Time Limit:
1 Month +
The Challenge starts on May 1 2007 and ends on June 15 2007. All entries must be submitted by midnight June 15, 2007 GMT. Winners will be posted the week of June 18, 2007.

Resources:
This is just to get the ideas started, but your search engine is your best friend.

By any chance is there a 3D model of the X-PLEASURE case?

That is so funny you should ask, Airbozo is working on getting one from Apevia and I don't think they've gotten back to him on it yet. But rest assured, if they send him one he'll post it for you.

What jdbnsn said.

I have been waiting for Apevia to get back to me on this and decided that I was not waiting anymore. I hope to hear back from them soon and will post any information here when I get it.

MaxOC

yes please urge them to get that to us. its too hard to make on of those by hand for each competitor, or you could make a fake one that sorta resembles it and have everyon use that so that it would at least level the 3d field

Do we HAVE to use a 3D modeling program or are hand drawn sketches acceptable?

...of course, a 3D model would probably win some extra points huh? lol

**Thanks, I can be a tard sometimes.**

Damn, I read vandal prove and I started coming up with ideas I was hoping to base it on server case I have lying around, Using the designated case makes one of my ideas a bit more difficult to implement. Oh well back to the drawing board (literally).

Edit: 8) Nevermind, I was looking at the pictures closer and it has the feature I wanted.

Is it alright to chop up the back panel of the case as long as the rest looks original?

Airbozo
05-01-2007, 10:29 PM
Yes, we are working on getting the models, but hand drawn is fine. It would take me a month just to draw the case without a tablet.

OK, I might be over thinking this one. I need a little clarifacation please. By "Vandal Proof" do you mean if someone tries to tamper with the case something will happen like a thousand bells and whistles go off? Or no matter what the vandal has in his/her tool box they won't be able to brake into the case i.e. crowbar and hacksaw?

I would say anything and everything that would make it Vandal Proof. Bells and whistles to warn them off? Sure. Reinforced structure so they can't break in and steal your components? Heck yea.

Robotic arms wielding electrically charged chainsaws with lasers for the chain? That might be a bit over the top. ;)

It's more to do with not being able to 'brake into the case' but bells and whistles do sound fun.... lol.

Erm I don't think you would be able to use the computer if it had concrete wrapped around it lol.

Well i dont think ill be entering But i had some ideas so i thought i would share them, not many but hey lol there free ideas :D

1. Have a little camera built in that door so u can see if anybodys stealing it and if they are records them and sends it to the security box.

2. Put a little transmitter on the bottom and a receiver on the desk. So when the case is moved say 1meter away it triggers a silent alarm.

3. Not for the case but for the Screen. Put a plexy glass plate or somthing over the screen so no pesty kids or adults can put there fingers on the screen or hit it.

Hope this give you some more ideas

Well free idea's are nice, but now that everyone knows them we can't really use them.

That said, before everyone decides to jump in with free ideas, I would like people to refrain from doing this. If someone were to mention one of my idea's on accident, I would feel like I was cheating and then I would not be able/want to use that idea.

As someone who _is_ entering this competition, I would appreciate it. Thanks. :)

Wasab, no harm done. You came close to one of my idea's, but not close enough. :p

Just go nuts with this one guys. We just want to see what you come up with. Don't worry about reading perfectly into the rules.

The point of the modder's challenge is to restrain your creativity: to see if you can still shine through when we limit what you can use or do.

Any sort of input is fine. There's no 'acceptable' medium or 'preferred' method. A good design will be apparent no matter what you do, and that's what the judges are looking for.

You may notice that i'm not on the Judges list. This is because i've handed this project completely over to Airbozo, so don't PM me with any questions. PM him! :p

Creativity is the key. Although I'm not judging this one, if I were, then I would definitely be looking for creativity. A Nerf Gun? Go for it, if it's buildable and so forth. Practicality is important, but that doesn't mean you can't have fun with the idea too.

Keep in mind, as Dave said earlier, "creativity is key". In reality there not much in the world that is vandal proof (not even Rome), so shoot for vandal resistant and think of a computer that you could post outdoors unmonitored and not have to worry about it. Non-violent defense mechanisms are definately preferred, not because anyone plans to build it but we do not endorse any form of violence on these forums. This is an example of a non-creative, violent defense mechanism...

Actually, I would say shoot for Vandal Proof so you get Vandal Resistant. lol that seems to be how things usually work. Nalgene water bottles, unbreakable. Guess what? A truck can sit on one and it wont break... for about 15 minutes. Then it explodes sending pieces of hard sharp plastic everywhere. lol

I'm in the process (and if nobody else did I was planning on providing it for public use). Whether or not it's any good will be for you guys to decide, but it won't be done for a day or two.

Edit: Here's how it is after a days work. It's far from finished but you get the general idea. All from scratch... :dead:

I am assuming you are making the sketch-up model to proper dimensions? I have some very determined aspects to my design already but some require exact measurements. Then again I may not use the model as I stink at sketch-up and it runs very slowly and crashes a bit on my current computer.

It isn't to exact specs. right now, because modeling with that size gets hard, even zoomed in. I'll end up scaling it down when I'm done.

Zephik
05-02-2007, 10:18 PM
Does anyone have the exact measurements or close to exact measurements? I'm pretty good with doing it by eye, but its a bit of a pain and it takes a good bit of time to get it just right.

btw, if anyone needs the basic dimensions you can get them off of Newegg.com under detailed specs. Unfortunately its not so detailed as to say window size, front grill measurements, etc etc. You can also get them from the main website HERE (http://www.apevia.com/product.php?pid=200).

I'm looking forward to this one, and I already have ideas running through the old noggin. Awesome challenge. And, although the Pit Bull idea is out, I've got a few mini-Pinchers running around that might make this the most vandal resistant case EVAR!!

Or not. They go kookoo for Beggin' Strips, so who knows how vandal proof they will be, huh? :D

I'm not sure if I'm going to enter this challenge yet but I thought I might be able to help out a little. I did some work in SketchUp and made the X-PLEASURE case. I haven't added the trays for the drives yet but if you guys want to use it as is just let me know who to send it to.

Hey all! Just a heads up that this challenge is coming to a close in a little over a week!

Just a reminder; While it would be nice for everyone to submit their entries as a fully detailed Sketch Up model, it is NOT necessary. An email of a scan of hand drawn details will work just fine. I am not a Sketch Up expert and do not expect any (or most) of you to be either. This Challenge is about ideas, not Sketch Up ability.

We have very few entries at this point. Jot some ideas on paper and SUBMIT!

Show us what kind of gray matter you have sloshing around that cranium of yours!

lol Thats what I'm afraid of. We got some pretty sharp tacks on these boards, I most likely don't have a chance. But if nobody enters.... then I'll win by default! lol its my only hope. :p

OK, I would like to announce that this challenge has been extended for 2 weeks!

That means you have extra time to draw up those idea's and get them to us.

Again, The submissions do NOT have to be cad drawings or sketchup models. Hand draw on graph paper is quite ok. You could even send in your entry in full text if the description is good.

Let's go Modder's, get your idea's going!

So now the Challenge Deadline is; June 15 2007...

I am doing this mainly because some people are going through finals and really wanted to enter but do not have the time. There are also a few people who missed the beginning of this competition and this gives them some extra time.

Just be patient. Remember the judges probably have to evaluate a hundred or so entries plus they also have a life of their own to worry about. Just give them some time. I'm sure they're going as fast as they can but still giving each and every entry a thorough screening before moving onto the next one. If they did it in a hurry who's to say they wouldn't fly over yours and miss something cool that would have won you the competition.

Entry #4 from SabreNoose;

Heya TBCS

I have spent absolutely ages on this competition, its been a great challenge, and i have
been really excited about getting to grips with it.
I felt that the best way to do my work justice was to compile the images and videos as a
web page. If this is an unsuitable format for use of the site, drop me an email and i
will modify it so that it is suitable.

I hope you enjoy what i have done with it, so here is the link to my entry, entitled

Entry #5 from chaksq;

Here is my plan to modify the Apevia X-Pleasure case to fit within the requirements of the TBCS Modder's Challenge 3: Vandal Proof Case. Below is my full proposal followed by a summary list of all my intended modifications to the Apevia X-Pleasure case. I have also sent three bitmap images as references to some of my larger modifications planned. Please note that none of my images are to scale.

Proposal:
The intent of proposal is to modify the Apevia X-Pleasure case in such a way that it can withstand most major computer damaging accidents and also to withstand a physical attack intended to damage and/or ruin the computer. The primary causes of accidental or intentional damage to a computer are liquids, drops, overheating, theft or forced entry, attack on case, and interrupted power.

To counter liquid damage I intend for the case to be waterproofed. To obtain this requires extensive modification. First all gaps that do not get opened such as seams between the side panels with the exception of the access side panel would be permanently sealed through caulk, welding, ect. The left side access panel and the front bay cover panel would have rubber seals that become watertight upon closure. A cover would be constructed that would cover the rear I/O panel and all cables would be run though this cover in such a way that water or other liquid could not get in. For cooling purposes a “wet zone” would be constructed within the lower front section of the case. This would be completely sealed from the remainder of the case. The radiators for the water cooling setup would be placed within this area and could be cooled with air that is pulled into this area through the front grill of the case. To move air through the “wet zone” regular case fans would need to be modified in some manner to work even while wet.

The next modifications would be to shock proof the case. This will prevent damage to components in case of a large impact such as the case falling over. The most key part of this would be to create a suspended motherboard cage. The motherboard would be mounted on a tray mounted within a metal frame. This frame would be mounted in a suspension system designed to absorb sudden impact to the case. Also the hard disk drive which can be even more vulnerable to a sudden shock would also be mounted in a similar manner.

To prevent any type of serious damage as a result of over heating an intensive water cooling system would be put in place. Due to the fact that the case is entirely sealed any major component producing heat that could damage it would need to be actively liquid cooled. As in most systems the CPU and GPU would be water cooled. Also the north, bridge, south bridge, and ram would be water cooled. A fanless water cooled power supply would be used in the case. Also the hard drives would be secured to water cooling blocks as well. Any other component that could be water cooled would be. Temperature sensors would monitor the cooling of each of the described components and special software would power down the computer if any system were to exceed safe operating temperatures.

There will be several methods to prevent against theft of the computer system or it's internal components. All of the locks for different sections of the case would be unique and more complex than standard computer locks. Also there would be a anchoring system to lock the case in place on a table, desk, floor, ect. The anchor could be developed as a shaft permanently mounted to wherever the computer would sit, this would be in the bottom of the case and be locked with a padlock or similar lock from within the closed and locked case. (See the file “Chaksq_3_Anchor.bmp” for reference)

To prevent against a physical attack on the computer the case would be modified and reinforced. The side panel of the case would be replaced with a strong impact resistant material possibly a type of bulletproof glass. Wires both on the inside and outside of the case would be wrapped in strong shrouding to prevent them either being cut or pulled apart. Upon examination of the case any weak sections of the case would be reinforced to allow the case to withstand attack by hands or blunt object. For example braces could be installed across the side and if the hinges of the front panel are weak as many computer cases are they could be replaced with stronger metal hinges.

Another source of damage to the system could come from various power issues. This could be a loss of power, power surge, ect. To advert this issue a small UPC backup would be installed into the case. This would be placed where the PSU is normally mounted and the PSU would be moved forwards in the case and turned to face vertically to allow for more room in the case. The UPC would be wired to tell the computer to shut down or hibernate if a loss of power should occur.

Other forms of protection would be set up on the computer. All hard drives would be set up with raid mirroring to protect data in case of failure. Also software security measures such as firewalls, ect. Would be set up to protect the software of the computer. A tape drive or similar technology would be installed so that regular backups could be made. A fingerprint scanner could be installed on the case for passwords, ect. A special software-hardware interface would be set up to monitor various sensors within the case including comprehensive temperature sensors, water sensors, and shock and motion sensors to detect movement of the case. All of these sensors would be setup to trigger a power down of the computer should any part of the case seem to be compromised or danger to the case/components is detected. If possible special software could be set up to monitor the status of the computer remotely through the Internet. Also a cell phone bluetooth connection could be set up so key functions of the computer could be controlled wirelessly.

Summary:
Waterproofing
-Entire case is waterproof.
-Fully sealed.
-Special I/O cover backplate. *
-Wet Zone: area inside of the case to place the radiators and anything needing outside exposure. *
-Waterproof fans for use in wet zone. *

Shock Proofing
-Motherboard mounted in a cage that is held into the case via a suspension system that absorbs the impact of falling over or being dropped/thrown. *
-Hard drives are contained to prevent shock and impact damage. *

Water Cooling
-Everything water cooled:
-CPU
-GPU
-Ram
-North Bridge & South Bridge
-PSU
-HDs
-Radiator mounted in front “wet zone”.
-Connected with temperature monitoring system. *

Theft Prevention
-Different locks for access of each section of case.
-Anchoring system to secure to work surface. *

Case Reinforcement
-Side window replaced with some type of impact resistant or bulletproof glass.
-Cables wrapped in reinforced shrouding.
-Reinforce weak spots (Extra bracing, stronger hinges)

System Security
-All HDs are raid mirrored.
-Backup tape drive.
-Fingerprint scanner.
-Sensor System: *
-Water sensor.
-Damage sensor.
-Shock/Impact sensor.
-Movement/motion sensor.
-Remote monitoring via Internet.
-Bluetooth cell phone link.

* Would need to be developed as a custom part/system.

Budget:
I did not have the time needed to throughly research costs of the various modifications I have planned for the case.

Well here is my design. I'm not so sure it stays within the guide lines of the challenge since my design is intended for a personal computer rather than for public use. I thought I would summit it and see what your response is.

I wanted to keep the original design untouched as much as possible and blend a few of the things I did change into the case. My design has fingerprint scanners to unlock the case's front and side panel instead of the basic key locks. When you open the front panel to access the drives you will have to punch in the correct number sequence to open the drives which are hidden using the stealth drive mod we have all seen. Now for the side panel there is another fingerprint scanner to unlock the panel but instead of a normal lock and using thumbscrews in the back, I used electric magnets on the inside of the steel case to hold the panel to the case. I'm not sure how much interference the magnets would have on the components but if it didn't affect the components I think it would be better to secure the case from the inside instead of using screws that someone can just unscrew from the outside. Also for the last security feature I would have light sensors on the feet of the case
to trip whenever the case was picked up. To supply power to these add-ons there would have to be a modified PSU or another power cord run to the case since unmodified PSU's only provide a limited amount of power to the motherboard and switches when the case is turned off. All these sensors would be wired to some type of alarm system. I didn't go into detail on the part of the mod since it could be wired into a house alarm, a stand alone silent alarm or ear bleeding sirens. It would be left up to the customer. The basic prices for the items are fairly cheap.

Fingerprint Scanner: $80 - $150 x 2
Keypad: $20 - $100
Light Sensor: $10 x 4
Magnet: $5

That's my rough price list and the basic plans I would use. Thanks for your time.

Welcome to the Apevia X-Pleasure V-Edition concept case.

Designed not only to protect the stunning design of the X-Pleasure, but to
highlight it as well.

http://www.lotechdesigns.com/host/images/4353X-Pleasure_V-Edition.JPG

Starting off with 1.5" steel tubing, it given eight 90 degree bends. Then
pieces of 3/8" steel are welded on to create feet and mounting tabs for the
two body panels. Then the unit is sent off for powder-coating. The body
consists of two panels. Both have two radius bends so that they cover three
sides each. To show-off the stunning Apevia design, the one panel is made of
3/8" Lexan. The second panel is made of steel sheet, with custom water-jet
cut-outs an option. Panels are fastened on using KEY-REX™ metric Machine
Screws. The stock X-Pleasure feet are removed and replaced with rubber
mounts and bolted to the frame. Holes in the feet allow the unit to be
securely bolted down to prevent theft.

SPECS:
Frame:
- 12' of 1-1/2 x 1.370 ID Welded - Structural Round Steel Tube $32.52
- 2' of 3/8" X 2" Steel Flat (Feet and tabs welded to frame) $7.34
Body:
- 4' x 2' 3/16" A36 Steel Plate $77.20
- 24" x 48" 3/8" Thick Clear Lexan(r) Polycarbonate Sheet $136.73
Fasteners:
-KEY-REX™ Metric Machine Screws (package of 350) 10.00

Also being considered is a similiar structure to hold a 30" Dell monitor,
speakers and a Stealth Computer Corp Kiosks keyboard/trackball. This unit
would also use steel tubing for a frame with steel sheet for the body
panels. Protecting the front would be a sheet of Lexan Polycarbonate to
prevent damage to the monitor. Whether in your local library or your next
tradeshow, the Apevia X-Pleasure V-Edition is sure to please.

Congratulations Sabrenoose  . You did an excellent job on your design and especially your presentation :D. You even took that extra step and modded a monitor to go with your case. I would say you have a promising career ahead of you.

Oh god, im so stoked that i was even considered for winner, let alone won,

its amazing how detailed and well thought out the other entries are, congratulations to everyone who entered the competition. I shouldnt really have expected any less as the entries to the competition pretty much live up to the rest of the mods on the site.

Im really glad that everyone was able to pull it together and make the competition a success and my thanks go out to Airbozo and the rest of the mod team and judges for holding a great competition. Its also really great to hear the comments about my work, im having my pre-university crisis, deciding whether games are my thing or 3d art, or business etc etc.

Now that i have a new case on its way, im going to go full swing into
continuing to mod my existing case in the style of halflife 2, i figure that its only right for me to add to the modding community. So that will hopefully be continuing sometime soon.

Im glad that you all appreciated my work, and thank you to everyone involved.

Good luck to those who are involved in the next modders challenge.

(oh and btw, you know that Boyakasha thing that ali g does with his fingers, mine are so sore from continually doing that whilst getting ready for college)

Thanks everyone

I must also give out some kudo's to jdbnsn for jumping in at the last minute to finish the announcement. I got a little busy the last couple of weeks with 3 jobs! (now down to 2). jdbnsn jumped in and made the announcement happen (which I should have posted early last week).

Thanks Jon!

The winning submission will probably be done using crayon on a napkin.

With the awesome presentation Sabrenoose did, I might as well used crayon!!!!

Great job, congrats!

I love the ideas and work done here, and congratulations to all of the winners thus far. I have a question, can we submit ideas for challenges? I have had this idea floating around for a while and thought it would make a nice challenge:

Fish Tank:
Case must have a live, viewable, fish swimming in it.
Case must be able to have regular tank maintenace performed on it without disassembley.
Case must weigh less than 40 pounds when complete.
Case must be waterproof... duh.
Case must have filter system.. way of feeding.. way of changing water..
Fish must have ample room to move around.

-------------------------
Case will be judged on:
Overall design,
Origionality,
Complexity,
Mobility,
Ease of Maintenance.

5 categories total, with a max score of 50.
Each categore is judged/voted upon from a scale of 1-10,
1 being the lowest and 10 being the highest possible grades.

We do welcome ideas for cases. The fishtank case is almost an urban myth around here...a lot of people come here claiming to build/have built one.

Then, there's the splitting. Those who, like me, think it's cruel, and those who think it's cool.

Then, the project ALWAYS dies. Maybe it is modder's challenge material. ;)

I have been contemplating doing something like it for a while, but my biggest concerns were the overall bulk and the maintenance aspects of the case. It would suck if you have to rip the whole case apart to clean the water every week. It should be a good challenge, I believe.

I have heard it myself but they never seem to have any type of proof. I'll believe it when I see it.
