Hey guys, summer is right around the corner, and this is when I usually build all of my computers for friends and family. Already I'm going to be building computers for 3 of my roommates, some friends from home, and maybe even some neighbors where I live.

Personally I have yet to have someone come to me with unlimited resources and ask for a custom computer, but my good friend who also builds computers has had such a thing occur. Someone came to him with $5000, and asked for the best he could get for it. Granted 5k isn't really unlimited when it comes to computers nowadays, but he got an awesome computer (2 7950GTX's in SLI, 4Gb DDR2 memory, some $700 watercooled case, top of the line Foxconn board, AMD processor (he was a fanboy of them) and well you get the idea.)

So here is my question to all TBCS members, new and weathered, if you had unlimited resources, what parts would you buy for your 1337beast?

Make a parts list of everything put into the system that you can think of, and if possible include links to either where you would buy the part or a picture/article for it.

Please use parts that are out on the market, after your list if you had other parts that you'd like to talk about that you can buy, please do so! Also explain what you like about your system.

I'll upload mine soon, I'm still finalizing it!

Have fun with this, it is a good way to learn about new products, and why you would buy them over others, it's also a good way for us as a community to come together!

My partners and I have been talking about upgrading our hosting box at the Co-Lo. We looked at some of the prebuilt alternatives (HP and Dell), and also at building ours. We set a limit of 3K for a build up server. So messing around I came up with this.
http://www.ovride.com/images/Capture01.JPG
Since its at a Co-Lo the custom case is kind of out but I found a pretty nice 2U rackmount with a 700W PSU and 6 hotswap SATA enclosures on the front. The case was right around 350 bucks (Can't find the link to it now. :( )
Its obviously not a gaming system, no need for SLI or Fast GPU's for this one.. but 8 cores, 6GB of DDR2, ~3TBs of storage should make for a pretty decent server. :D
We still haven't decided what we are going to do. With a system like this, we were thinking of Virtualizing 6 servers on it, which would give us lots of expansion.

Wow, great replies so far, here is something that I have been thinking about for a while:

Motherboard: ASUS Striker Extreme (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131074) (~$350)

Processor(s): Not sure which is better, either the
Presler, 3.75Ghz Dual Core (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116248) (~$1030),
or the XQ800 2.93Ghz (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115001)(~$1000)

Hard Drive(s):
Boot into this drive, Seagate's 15,000 RPM drive (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822111152) (~$1100)
And then A couple 750hd's on the side, Seagate 750 HD (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148134) *2 ($250 each, total of $500)

Okay... so I'll take a breather, the running total so far is ~$2950)

Next, I'll go with some memory, the 2Gb sticks are out, so I'd grab 4 of those!
Memory: Kingston's 2Gb sticks, DDR2 800, 6400. (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820104001) One pack costs ~$430, but that won't do! (2 * = ~$860)

CD-Drive: Sony's New Blue Ray Device! (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827131034) (~$430)

Power Supply: Thermaltake's Toughpower 1200watt PSU (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817153054) (~$400)

Video Card(s): 2 * BFG watercooled Geforce 8800GTX (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814143085) OC'ed to 650/2000Mhz (2 * ~$950 = $1900)

Sound Card: Creative X-Fi Elite 7.1 System (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16829102191) (~$260)

Case: COOLER MASTER Stacker 830 Evolution (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811119122) (~$260)
(I really like this case, and think it will be my next one, so my Watercooling will fit!)

Watercooling from Danger Den: Not sure how to price this out, but I'll leave $500 for this, I figure I already have the waterblocks for the GPU's so I would just need radiators, a pump, tubing, the cpu block, radiators, and maybe stuff for the memory/HD +accessories. (~$500)

Running Total: $7560

I'll come back for round 2, where I'll post monitors, speakers, keyboard, mouse, and w/e else I left out.

i would have my ram and chipset block on its own cooling circuit with a 3x120mm black ice rad.
i would have all the hdds on a circuit with 4x120mm black ice rad.
i would have the cpu with a 3x120mm rad.
and lastly i would have the 2 8800gtx's with 1 4x120mm rad.

i would have 1 of the cases hold the computer and the other i would have all the coolers, pump etc inside with a 850 watt psu.

in the main case i would put the 1000watt psu.

a crazy 6.600 TB's of space

i couldn't find everything i wanted like a reservoir and good computer desk and chiar. and i would spend some more of this money on a room built to hold it all. for summer days i would get a window shaker(window ac) and have it somehow hooked up to the cooling case. i would have said 2 8800 ultras but i like the bfg prewater cooled ones.

that would be my dream pc!

It would be really interesting to come back and look at this thread 5 years from now. Just to see how far processors , memory, etc. have come and how "Expensive" they are now. that $22k machine could be had for around $500 in 5 years. -Wouldn't that be great?

yes and no, yes - its cheap for a awesome computer, no- it will be badly outdated for 500. they would probably have 16 cores, 20gbs sticks of ram, 5tb drives, 10gb video cards... hehe fun to dream...

I'd just go the easy way:

-The best Dell XPS you can buy
-3 x 30" LCD Displays
-Windows Vista Ultimate
-Fiber Optic line for internet

That's pretty much it.

pfft.

Keep the 3x30" displays, and build from scratch, watercool, and throw Unix on there.

Fiber Optic, however, would have to stay. I'd have to move to take advantage of it, but yeah, keep that too.

I'll put together my dream pc later tonite.

What good would this system be without some modding? I'd add the following to it as well:

Valeo Heater Core for watercooling -- ~100.00, give or take depending on market

120mm fan x 2 (cooling for the HC) -- 37.98

A smattering of LEDs and CCFLs, tastefully done, of course -- 25.00

Watercooling tubing, blocks, pump, and liquid -- 600.00

And finally, one thing that I'm seeing absent from everyone else's list: I'd drop a minimum of $200.00 on a really comfortable chair. Preferably with massage and heat options.

So that gives us a grand total of: $12666.71 before modding and roughly $13689.69 with mods and the comfy chair.

Wonder if I could refinance my pickup? :p
