I forgot to show these from the Australia trip I took over Christmas break last/this year. Me and my dad went diving off of a cruise ship. The diving on the Great Barrier Reef is breathtaking. The water was just right, and there were no jellyfish (except close to shore). Saw thousands of different fish, giant coral, and sea tortoises.

Definitely worth getting your SCUBA certification.

:p I know. We catch them all the time offshore from our house at NC. They can get pretty damn big, but we usually go out when there's a whole buncha babies around. We've seen a couple reef sharks, but they were only about 3-4 feet long while i was in AU.

Nah there are no man eaters on the reef. The water is to shallow for them. You only get reef sharks which are harmless.
We get the big sharks further south.
You have more to worry about on the reef like stone fish and sea snakes.
Yeah diving on the reef is great. Especially from a smaller cruise boat or when we bring our yatch all the friken long way up the coast.
Where did you go out to the reef from progbuddy?

This question is directed toward the Aussie members.
I was watching some special on TV about Irukandji jellyfish they called it the invisible deadly danger. Is this true? Have there been alot of deaths from them, or is it just another one of those tourist scare type things?

this is the closest I want to come to a shark in real life.

I took this a couple weeks ago at our zoo aquarium.
Here is an octopus too.

yes there are clear jellyfish that are very danugeous Eclecticos but there very rear to find they mostly hang out in the middle of the ocean i mean 1000's of miles/km out and even if you get stung by one people normal dont die from it unless they have an algergic reaction or if it stuffs withs peoples insides what i mean by that is theres cases where people say ahve been stung and hard a heart attack from it.
near the shore you will pretty much only see blue box jelly fish witch do sting if you touch there tenticles but im pretty sure no one has died from them (but i might be wrong)
Very cool pics! I'd love to do that sometime.

Yeah there are some bad jelly fish. Those live way up north so alot of people don't get stung. While there are blue bottles which give a nasty annoying sting there are also box jellyfish who's venom can cause death. You are better off though asking someone who lives further north as Australia is a big country.

Yeah. Near Cairns they have those small jellyfish. You can see them... under a magnifying glass :p. They are VERY dangerous. Just stay off the beaches during AU's summer months.
I've been diving a total of 6 times so far. I got my certification last November.

What kind do you usually catch out there?? I go surfing almost every summer down at the Rodanthe Pier...we've seen what looked like Bull, but what else is out there?

We see lots of Nurse Sharks, some Lemon Sharks, and a whole load of seabass and "grunt".
The biggest fish was a 247 pound bluefin tuna my dad caught. It was good :).

We also have great whites on the west coast of the US. They swim with the surfers and occasionally take a taste. They must hate the taste of humans though since they usually spit them out...
Just off of Half Moon Bay at a HUGE wave called Mavericks, they see them in the water all the time. Added incentive NOT to fall off...

EDIT: ...and no, my balls are NOT big enough to surf that wave...

Talk about a WAVE. . damn you bail out on one of those and your dead. . I got forced to the bottom by a wave once and about got knocked out.
I never seen one that big, the waves are tiny here in florida. . inless there is a Hurricane comming.

We all know how I hate to cause any disruption in the normal flow of things but I am 40 now so I am allowed to be persnickety and I have seen a couple of points here worth talking about... and having nothing better to do while the kids are getting up and dressed... here we go...
Farrr. . Out! My dad is a Cave master here in Florida.
I have only been cave diving for a short time, SCUBA diving for a good while, and researching the whole thing for a heckuva a long time. I have dove with people all over the state and I have never even heard of a cave master. Did you mean to say he is a "Master Diver" who has taken some cave diving specialty courses?
They must hate the taste of humans though since they usually spit them out...
Actually scientists think they DO hate the taste of us but it's because we aren't fatty enough for them. Studies have shown that some sharks are actually able to raise their body temps to be more active and faster in cold water. They love the fatty animals like seals as it's easier to digest and utilize the fat.

unless... coming... and no, no they aren't... I guess it depends on your version of the word tiny. The problem is that real Floridians (except for surfers) don't go into the water all that much in the winter months, say November thru March, and that's when the waves get bigger...
Here is South Florida, wave heights in the winter time are usually 3 to 6 feet, sometimes better, sometimes worse... and North Florida gets 10 footers all the time... guess it's all a matter of perspective.

I think the Cave master title was more a Pun of words if you will. Get it. ."Cave Master" :D
And by comparison of California waves, Hawaii ect. Florida Waves are kinda sad.
Been to Daytona, Sebastian, Miami, Vero, Cocoa, The Keys, 1/2ft-3ft is the Norm. 10Ft. Is the max. 12 or 14 if your lucky enough to spot a rouge wave.
I might as well not even mention the gulf side.
No Offense. Just my perspective.

The National Weather Service is predicting winds gusts as strong as 30 mph and surf as high as 15 feet in South Florida today.
Both the strong wind and high surf advisories are in effect from 2 p.m. until 8 p.m. Monday as a cool front moves through the area.
The strong wind advisory says northeast winds will reach 25 mph, with gusts past 30 mph, before they begin to diminish in the evening.
Those strong winds will kick up a large swell along the South Florida coast, the weather service said.
"Swell heights could reach over 10 feet with a long period ... especially across the Palm Beach coast," the weather service said.
"This will result in breaking waves of 10 to 15 feet along the Palm Beach County coast and 10 feet or higher along the Broward and Miami-Dade coast Monday afternoon through early Tuesday evening.
