On discovery channel they say by the year 2020 There will be strip mining on the moon for Helium 3 as an energy source.

Think it will happen or is it a load of bullocks?

Discovery has never lied to me before... Isn't Space Week on this week? I saw something on earlier today, I might have to go watch some later.

I heard they are going to make the moon into a nasa gas station, for further exploration of the universe.

btw, i think its bullocks, because of the costs to ship it.

can't we just stick to what we have geez, the world is going to hell in a hand basket!

we have hydrogen, solar, water, natural gas, bio diesel, electric all as fuel thats enough~!!!

I just happened to be watching this earlier at the same time as you.

Representing for ESTime :D

Did you catch the Mars Special. Was preddy good.

I wish I could drive one of those rovers around, Id be jumping it. . and going evil knevil style over craters.

It looked like to me that they were reaaalll sloooo. .

wasn't there something said about building an elevator into outerspace?

DaJe

Yep, space elevator.

And eys, I did see the Mars one. Though it may have been on before. I'm watching the moon one again, and they just said that if they had gold bars stacked on the moon, they couldn't afford to bring them back. But with helium 3, they can't afford not to bring it to earth. They can also apply heat and pressure to get drinkable water out of the moon.

Ya, I just happened to catch the ending of it. Im sure we could do it now... We have so much stuff that people wouldn't expect now.

Knowing how things come to be public and the length of time they wait. There probably already doing it, or have it in the works.

Only thing i didn't like is how they made it out like we were going to be fighting over the moon; a shame.

If there were a man in the moon he'd probably spit on us. :D

and calling it strip mining. My God.

He Looks worried. ::Says, Ill be damned:: :D

So, we have a little bit of helium 3 on Earth. So is that like a strip tease or something?

LMAO. .

They don't really have there story straight. .
You got the one guy making water with heated up moon dust.
The other d00d says its uninhabitable no water.

So from what I gather all they will need. . Is a Big heater h20 generator "thingamaJig" and a greenhouse. . and Bingo! Chow on the moon. LOL.

Oop. . broke the spacebar. .

I caught a little of the show and they said helium 3 can produce 1000 years of energy but I'm not sure how much they're talking about mining.

I hope they thought about the affect the mining will have on our planet. I'm just guessing here but if they mine to much won't that alter the rotation of the moon around earth and that'll throw of the tide and other things the moon affects here on earth?

Thats the first thing I thought. The Money Hungry will Slingshot us into the sun.

Isn't Helium 3 coming out on xBox 360 soon?

oh, wait. That was Halo 3.... :p

@ Spacehonkey:

the moon is already going away from us, but i don't think they could offset the balance with strip mining, you would millions of tons of material to move the scale

btw: i'm still waiting for antimatter lol :D

I understand that, but whne have we ever been know to pull back before we ruin something for good when it comes to money and power, which the helium 3 will give.

Well I'm waiting to see what kind of war we're going to fight to see which country owns the moon. I don't think the whole whoever starts mining there first will work for ownership.

We could probably build some artificial devices for asteroid protection and tide control.

Hi all,

I would like to say that i have contacts, and in talking with them the way H3 has collected on the moon is very simple,

H3 comes from the sun and solor flares, on earth the OZone protects us from H3 and deflects it away, the moon dosen't have a Ozone, but the moon dust and rocks collect the H3, as a result there is a source so great it would take HUNDREDS of years to depleat.

1ton of liquid H3 is enough to power 10million homes for one year, even if it costs 1billion dollors to bring it back/mine 1ton, it still works out cheaper, its still costing just asmuch as the northan sea mining operation.

The advantages with H3 is the way we can harnise the power, At present we use Nucular FISION, (Commanly mistaken for FUSION), we have already started to delve into fusion, but to do this we need to use H to power it as a fuel souce, 80% of the power created is in the form of nutrons and are extramly dangerous and destroy the housing and need to be replace frequently, H3 is almost indentical to H but it only creates approx 20% nutrons that H would and as such the housing would last the live span of the reactor.

There is a small supply if H3 on this planet, it comes from deactivated NUKE warheads.

IN short, mining the moon for H3 is a good idea, it won't affect the moon's orbit in anyway, the moon also contains:
Various Metals
O2
H3
and other substances

in theory it we could mine the moon with a self sustaning enviroment, we intend to use this as a stepping stone to explore the outer reaches of our solor system.

Take all this with a pinch of salt, as most of this is theory sofar, but according to my contact, various countrys are looking into this, BUT, USA isn't one of them, NASA isn't going to the moon until 2017, RUSSIA are planning to start mining by 2020 and will more than likly be a group effort of multipul countrys.

When we start using VIABLE nucular fusion power generators it will help stop global warming as power stations at present create a large chuck of the gasses, the new generators are carbon nutural, there isn't even any ROD left after the use of the generator.

So the governments arn't going to the moon untill 2017. That says nothing about the private space industry. Let see...by 2017 I will be out of college and just getting my business started...hmmm...doth I see a posibility for a business statement ;)

USA/NASA isn't going to the moon until 2017, other countrys will be, ESA want to be on the moon prity soon

With NASA's current pace of simply completing the ISS, we won't be mining the moon anytime soon. China will probably get there first and engrave all the rocks with "Made in China" or put stickers on them.

It's a great idea though. I can see damn politics getting in the way because of Big Oil but it might still work.

I have a Q about fusion reactors: Can they go ballistic/meltdown like a fission reactor? Or can they do something similar to a supernova?

If there are small starships in the near future running on fusion reactors, I want to be on the bridge. We could stick some NASA personnel down on engineering to keep it working too. lol ;)

Why doesnt microsoft take this oppurtunity to colonize the moon and make..MICROSOFTLAND!

jk jk. Is there a law about private companies settling on the moon? Cause...how in the 'eck would that work?

Does H3 have a toxicity level?

Eclecticos
05-07-2007, 11:54 PM
Not sure. I remember hearing that it wasn't nearly as dangerous as the current nuclear fusion in terms of explosion or hazard.
Says Non-Toxic Here is the Rundown:

Edit: Correction Low Residual Radioactivity.

as far as im aware, fusion reactors can go CRAZY, but won't cause massis of damage like current fision reactors, when fusion go AHGJ&^*&^%%$YFJT&

it tends to fizzle out becuase of the way it works. Fusion is where no h3 particals colide, combine, the explosion from coliding creates GUGE ammounts of heat, remove the source of power spinning the particals and the reaction stops, it can't become self sufficaent like fision. Plus moden reactors are so safe now, there are GOD KNOWS how meny fail safes,

Tons of water, Sand, concreate and various other ways to stop the reaction as quick as possable to prevent the "China Sindrome" from accoring. For example, all pipes and joints are to be X-Rayed every 3months to ensure the joints are still good, all suppending joints and holders are tested every 3 months, and replaced if found faulty and 4 years regardless of there health.
