probably socket 478.i only got into computers about a year ago so, you might want to ask one of the other emebers who has been into computers longer. i think it's probably socket 478 but i am only 60%.

for the case, how about one of these, either the v1000 or the v1100, unless you want a full case(i have one. they are bigger and heavier so not for lans but they offer more upgradability)?
that leaves you at the least 120 if you go for the most expensive case. Lian-Li case are one of the best, if not the best, case company's for Quality.you only really nedd the V-1000, so that's 120 plus for OCZ Modstream modular PSU
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/OCZ.html
very good quality PSU and it's modular so that cuts down on cable mess.and i's sleaved. that leaves around 20 for max shipping and 100 for mobo.

Asus and Abit both make good mobos. i am pretty sure that 875p is the best socket 478 chipset.

ok so to sume it up, i should buy a Lian-Li case with a Asus or Abit motherboard, a 875p schipset and a power supply unit from http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/OCZ.html ?

the reviews of it are excelent. just found it on auction on ebay for £16, a bid is on its way lol. ill see if the power suply is on there if not ill have to buy it brand new lol. SO the motherboard will fit any PC Case, or do i have to get a specific case?

Okay, CPU socket aside, what kind of GPU socket have you got? I assume that if you haven't changed your MoBo for 3 years you are running on a AGP so you must make sure that your MoBo has an AGP bracket. But you must also remember that if this is your upgrade for a couple of years then you must think about upgrading in the future to a new GPU in the new future and going PCI-E. I have a ECS 915P-A (http://www.ecsusa.com/products/915p-a.html) which has both AGP and PCI-E. However this will not work for you as you probably don't have LGA775 socket P4.

Also make sure that you get a MoBo that works for your memory which I assume is not DDR2 so don't get a MoBo with DDR2 slots.

u can't get 478 mobo's with ddr2 slots
