As previously stated this Mod is for my In Laws. Since CLOWNED is complete and a present for my mom, I thought my In laws should get a mod too, to replace their 500MHz Gateway. They or my wife have no knowledge of this project. Thus far I only have the following components:

(1) 80GB Seagate HD
(1) AMD Opteron 165 (1.8GHz) Dual Core
(1) Green Aspire X-Discovery Case

http://img146.imageshack.us/img146/6370/xdiscoveryes5.jpg

I will act as though the top of the case is the hood. Since I have limited ability in making a good looking scoop, I will be mounting an engine in the top of the case. The engine is the Dodge 426 Hemi. I want to tie in a 20mm fan that once cooled the Northbridge chipset to the crank. I'm hoping it will spin the engine fan without makiung it fall apart, but I won't know till I try.

http://img223.imageshack.us/img223/3924/hemienginexa2.jpg

Here's some concept pics of what I'm looking to do. I used Google Sketchup and then did a print screen to save them as .jpg's. The concept pics aren't final. I still need to add the stripes to the concept pics.

http://img146.imageshack.us/img146/1899/sketch1ra9.jpg
http://img69.imageshack.us/img69/299/sketch2ll4.jpg

And so it begins again. Join me on another adventure.

Here's pics of the components. I said earlier that I had a Seagate 80GB, but was mistaken; it's a Maxtor 80GB Diamondmax 16.

http://img525.imageshack.us/img525/6390/maxtor80cc6.jpg

Here's the modem.

http://img153.imageshack.us/img153/4750/modemkt6.jpg

And the Opteron

http://img81.imageshack.us/img81/9749/opteronxz3.jpg

Today I got the bee decal

http://img81.imageshack.us/img81/8229/decaldw3.jpg

And the SuperBee emblem

I got the case in the mail and as you can see it's not nearly as bright of a green as the website showed. But that's great, because it's even closer to the color of the car!

http://img282.imageshack.us/img282/726/new12hl3.jpg

Also, I tested the engine spinning idea with the use of an 80mm fan and it just doesn't have the torque to spin it. There's more ways ahead.

Here's some updated concept pics.

I took the windowed panel off and disassembled the fan and grill. As you can see they added this nice little piece of mesh too. I won't be reusing the grill, but I do like the mesh.

http://img148.imageshack.us/img148/8828/3piecevm3.jpg

Another nice feature is the removable mobo tray.

http://img92.imageshack.us/img92/1633/trayxc8.jpg

The right panel has an awfully convenient place for the "HEMI" window.

http://img48.imageshack.us/img48/6318/rightprepjw7.jpg

And as you can see I've already begun the painting.

http://img92.imageshack.us/img92/6990/flat1tb5.jpg

http://img486.imageshack.us/img486/2721/flat2fv1.jpg

Here's the paint I'm using. A nice flat black.

http://img92.imageshack.us/img92/8392/flat3dj6.jpg

I also cut a small angle to show the bend of the stripe.

http://img92.imageshack.us/img92/2595/flat4vo5.jpg

I've been meaning to mention for a long time how nice it is to have this mini spotlight.

http://img425.imageshack.us/img425/8387/lightfq6.jpg

I marked off the width for the right stripe. It has to be identical to the left.

http://img119.imageshack.us/img119/9526/rightstripe1py3.jpg

Then I roughed up the paint....

http://img291.imageshack.us/img291/7272/rightstripe2qv3.jpg

...and slapped it on.

http://img291.imageshack.us/img291/8026/rightstripe3tt4.jpg

Looks good, again.

The motherboard I got is the DFI LANPARTY UT nF4 Ultra-D is mine. I still have to get the Video Card, Memory, Heatsink, DVD drive and the front panel LCD.

Here's the right side cut.

http://img89.imageshack.us/img89/2646/rightcutbe6.jpg

I got the logo. It's 6 inches in diameter, the case is 8 inches. The logo here is yellow, but it doesn't matter I just need the black parts. I'll cut away all the yellow and slap it on, then clear coat over it.

http://img160.imageshack.us/img160/6335/yellowtk3.jpg

Just like the car.

I popped out the drive bay covers and removed the front glass.

http://img114.imageshack.us/img114/6706/bezel1wc2.jpg

Then taped off the front panel

http://img86.imageshack.us/img86/4237/bezel2zf6.jpg

I painted the bay covers separately

http://img86.imageshack.us/img86/764/bezel3nb4.jpg

Then painted the vents. After it dried I made sure that none of the vents was clogged.

http://img86.imageshack.us/img86/6029/bezel4xm8.jpg

Then removed the paint tape

http://img114.imageshack.us/img114/957/bezel5yx4.jpg

Lastly, I slapped the covers back on.

How would this look for a hood scoop?

you mean this..
Polished aluminum hood scoop w/flames engraving for single Quad - with inlet screen and bezel. 13.5" long - Fits carbureters with 5-1/8" neck. 6-3/8 x 2-1/2" air cleaner and mounting hardware included.
?
http://i4.ebayimg.com/02/i/06/76/0b/86_2.JPG..?

it's brilliant!
and it goes A+ with a car-mod :)

oh.. i forgot to look at the price :( if i had the bucks (and the posibility to buy it online) i would take it! it would probably be very hard to make this by yourself, if possible.. and maybe the materials wouldnt be 100 bucks, but the machines and experience would be :(

oh, this mod is awsome! nice plan and nice case :)

What if I get a cheap $10 mailbox and cut it at the dotted line and use the curved part for the scoop?

Duh, I just remembered. The case has a piece of glass over the front, so you'd have to open the glass door then use the cup holder. I think it would look stupid.

Also,

This is my concept for the top with the scoop. I haven't settled on what will be IN the scoop, but it would probably be illuminated exhaust fans and a different type of mesh than what comes with the Hood scoop.
http://img88.imageshack.us/img88/1117/topscoopks6.jpg

I fixed the edge of the stripe.

http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/1084/stripefixpz6.jpg

Then I put the SuperBee emblem on the right

http://img81.imageshack.us/img81/1499/emblemonvo4.jpg

It wouls be nice if you'd also add the little stripe like on the car:
http://i79.photobucket.com/albums/j139/rstakelbeek/superbee2.jpg

I think it'll look very cool if you do this, especially on the top of the case...

TheGreatSatan

as a custom grill for here:

I laid the stencil for which to cut the mopar grill. I’ll start on it tomorrow on my day off.

http://img105.imageshack.us/img105/1170/mopargrill1rv6.jpg

I finally got around to adding the thin pin stripe above the larger stripe.

http://img105.imageshack.us/img105/4165/pin1xr4.jpg

http://img149.imageshack.us/img149/2387/pin2an5.jpg

http://img65.imageshack.us/img65/7061/pin4sx2.jpg

http://img149.imageshack.us/img149/9189/pin5po2.jpg

I got the Cooler Master Musketeer

No. I will paint it flat black to match.

The memory came today. OCZ PC4000 Gold (2x512MB)

http://img74.imageshack.us/img74/5636/packagelgsd2.jpg

Should I add another pin stripe here? It'll only be a vertical stripe though.

I worked on the custom Mopar grill and yes, I know it's not perfect, but it is a start.

http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/4185/intake01br2.jpg

Here's kind of what I'm looking for.

http://img217.imageshack.us/img217/4303/intake02vj1.jpg

Except I want mesh. Not thin modder's mesh, but something thicker. So I took it from this old case.

http://img238.imageshack.us/img238/7972/intake03xf2.jpg

Here's what it looks like joined to the grill framing

http://img217.imageshack.us/img217/6950/intake04mb4.jpg

And then again with the "M"

http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/93/intake05ga2.jpg

All the excess along the sides had to go....So I started cutting

http://img217.imageshack.us/img217/4656/intake06qt4.jpg

Till I finished

http://img217.imageshack.us/img217/5772/intake07ny4.jpg

And replaced the "M"

http://img217.imageshack.us/img217/1189/intake08ea2.jpg

Here's kind of what to expect with the case fan attached.

http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/2628/intake09xf4.jpg
http://img238.imageshack.us/img238/5518/intake10mz6.jpg
http://img217.imageshack.us/img217/2064/intake11dm3.jpg

One last thing. Should I leave the "M" Silver or paint it? Maybe to match the case (at least as close as possible)?

TheGreatSatan
08-15-2006, 11:08 PM
There's a thought. I need to see if I can get a close match to the case color.for the mesh. Here's a look of the black M.

http://img218.imageshack.us/img218/8509/blackm2xd4.jpg

The hood scoop has arrived.

http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/1401/hs1aa4.jpg
http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/9197/hs2ro2.jpg

Should I put the scoop farther back

http://img149.imageshack.us/img149/9049/hs3qj1.jpg

Or more in the middle?

http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/8779/hs4xr9.jpg

Here's the mesh. I will not be using this mesh.

http://img149.imageshack.us/img149/3545/hs5zj6.jpg

For the side scoop option, I found these at Auto Zone.

http://img149.imageshack.us/img149/4750/ss1ot1.jpg

If I cut them into single pieces and lie them side by side it looks like this

http://img149.imageshack.us/img149/1332/ss2oz7.jpg
http://img97.imageshack.us/img97/7315/ss3pm7.jpg

And this...

http://img97.imageshack.us/img97/9384/ss4fz3.jpg
http://img149.imageshack.us/img149/5534/ss5wg7.jpg

I think I like the first two better.

TheGreatSatan
08-18-2006, 07:01 PM
I got the matching keyboard and mouse combo

http://img95.imageshack.us/img95/2330/beekeyboardyi2.jpg

And I bought the custom Dodge etch from Crazy PC

http://img148.imageshack.us/img148/5406/etch1vj8.jpg

Then applied it to the window.

http://img148.imageshack.us/img148/2554/etch2ma4.jpg

Then I got the hole saw for the exhaust fan on top.

http://img95.imageshack.us/img95/9012/exhaust1zl5.jpg

The hole saw was actually too dull and I had to finish with the dremel.

http://img95.imageshack.us/img95/3024/exhaust2zi8.jpg

I then fixed the bad hole and applied the flat black.

http://img148.imageshack.us/img148/7174/exhaust3ji6.jpg

Then peeled off the tape.

http://img219.imageshack.us/img219/3435/exhaust4cl8.jpg

And used the pin striping.

http://img95.imageshack.us/img95/2938/exhaust5hb2.jpg

TheGreatSatan
08-18-2006, 08:35 PM
Yeah it will be an exhaust. Heat rises, so it seem stupid to fight that.

I replaced the mesh for the Hood Scoop.

http://img96.imageshack.us/img96/4131/hsmesh1pr0.jpg
http://img96.imageshack.us/img96/2858/hsmesh2rh7.jpg

And I painted the Hood Scoop to match the case.

http://img157.imageshack.us/img157/4662/hsmesh3so1.jpg

Then I drilled out the screw holes .

http://img151.imageshack.us/img151/139/topfan1il8.jpg

Then I put the fan in and blackened the screws.

http://img151.imageshack.us/img151/8898/topfan2tw8.jpg

Then put the Hood Scoop perfectly on. :D

http://img81.imageshack.us/img81/3069/topfan3zd1.jpg

Well I woke up at 3:00 a.m. and couldn't fall back asleep so...

Just to see what it looks like, I added the drives

http://img221.imageshack.us/img221/7029/drives1cq9.jpg
http://img209.imageshack.us/img209/92/drives2gw5.jpg
http://img209.imageshack.us/img209/5687/drives3rp9.jpg

Then I hooked the top exhaust fan to a test PC to see it lit up.

http://img301.imageshack.us/img301/484/bluetop1fs4.jpg
http://img209.imageshack.us/img209/778/bluetop2nc4.jpg

Lastly I fixed the pin stripe so that comes from the Superbee logo and goes clear to the end of the case.

really nice case mod :) looks very clean.

i have the same keyboard, but with black/black :)

TheGreatSatan
08-19-2006, 01:22 PM
Yeah, I like the keyboard, but the mouse is pretty crappy. It's a horrible Apple-type knock off.

I went to the hobby store and spent .99 cents on some lettering.

http://img134.imageshack.us/img134/4434/hemi1qy0.jpg

Which added some detail to the hood scoops.

http://img134.imageshack.us/img134/6927/hemi2py1.jpg

http://img134.imageshack.us/img134/5981/hemi3tn3.jpg

Next came the window grill. First some primer...

http://img134.imageshack.us/img134/359/grill1bv5.jpg

Then the green on the mesh.

http://img219.imageshack.us/img219/1852/grill2by5.jpg

And I made the grill frame black.

http://img219.imageshack.us/img219/5038/grill3jo4.jpg

Then I bonded the Mopar "M" to the mesh

http://img219.imageshack.us/img219/2166/grill4hh1.jpg

And lastly I put it all together.

http://img219.imageshack.us/img219/4494/grill5zf1.jpg

And then on the panel.

I was wondering if I should use this old HD cooler bay front piece in place of one of the bays to "look" like a car grill? Or would it be overkill?

http://img165.imageshack.us/img165/4944/bayventzw1.jpg

Also, since I lost money on the motherboard in a bad ebay transaction and since my In-Laws will be visiting in 2 weeks, I added a multifunctional floppy/media reader drive. I was going to add a Matrix Orbital LCDC, but do not have the money.

So I was looking at maybe putting the engine inside, but I think it's way too big. It sure won't fit between the drive cage rails and it would probably prevent a video card from staying in the slot.

Lastly I replaced to IO plate

I put the glass back on the front too.

http://img80.imageshack.us/img80/4039/glassedxl3.jpg

I also have been doing a bit of Soldering to take out the switches these cathodes come with. I don't want a bunch of switches on the back panel. When you power up the lights come on and then they turn off when you power down.

http://img183.imageshack.us/img183/2554/soldergy5.jpg

For the loose lighting cables...

http://img183.imageshack.us/img183/3557/glued1ly1.jpg
http://img80.imageshack.us/img80/2787/glued2dh7.jpg

...I'm glueing them all down. Trust me, a glue gun is always nice to have around.

http://img80.imageshack.us/img80/3524/glued4se3.jpg

Lastly, I'm thinking of adding a UV cathode above the motherboard. There will be a few UV cathodes inside to really show off the UV sensitive Mobo.

I could never stand seeing the drive bay cage from the window.

http://img177.imageshack.us/img177/5235/whatif4qh6ld8.jpg

Can you think of something I can put there to cover it up that'll look cool? I thought about making a dealer window sticker for the 1971 Dodge Charger SuperBee and put that there. What do you think?

I kind of like the blue wiring. Some color wiring may be cool.

I tried plugging in the CPU fan, that has 4 pins to the place on the board that only has 3, but it won't fit here.

http://img98.imageshack.us/img98/4959/cpufan1hh1.jpg

What's this 4 pin power for?

http://img98.imageshack.us/img98/8067/4pincb8.jpg

This cable comes from the floppy/media reader, but I don't know where to plug it in. The 4 pin jumper above doesn't say if it has data + or data -.

Here's 2 pics of what he proc will kind of look like with the engine cover on.

http://img178.imageshack.us/img178/9494/filter1ra4.jpg
http://img98.imageshack.us/img98/8509/filter2qd4.jpg

I painted the exposed drive bays black.

http://img98.imageshack.us/img98/6466/darkdriveam0.jpg

I'm gonna copy the look of an engine with this CAT 5 cable.

http://img98.imageshack.us/img98/3087/cat5mt9.jpg

I cut it up and I'm going to try to find a way to make it look good there.

http://img98.imageshack.us/img98/6992/catcutfj2.jpg

Lastly I made all the power connections and cleaned up the wiring. The IDE cables will be black.

About 1 week ago she found out and is happy that I'm doing the mod.
************************************************** *******
I've decided against the blue wires. It looked real stupid and untidy. With just a black cage it looks real clean and simple.

I bought a 10 inch UV cathode from AutoZone. These are brighter than ones made for PC's.

http://img20.imageshack.us/img20/1720/10inchuv1pi0.jpg

I got out a spare molex

http://img142.imageshack.us/img142/1430/10inchuv2zj7.jpg

Then I cut off the end and separated the 12V from the ground.

http://img20.imageshack.us/img20/390/10inchuv3as3.jpg

I did the same with the molex

http://img20.imageshack.us/img20/7741/10inchuv4jf4.jpg

Then soldered them together.

http://img174.imageshack.us/img174/1972/10inchuv5lg7.jpg

And it works!

http://img20.imageshack.us/img20/7089/10inchuv6sg4.jpg

So I put it in the case.

http://img105.imageshack.us/img105/2626/10inchuv7sc2.jpg

Next comes the engine/processor mod. I bought an 80mm blow hole funnel and a 120mm to 92mm fan adapter.

http://img105.imageshack.us/img105/7145/cap1zz5.jpg

I slid one into the other....

http://img174.imageshack.us/img174/4213/cap2dt9.jpg

And cut away the excess.

http://img174.imageshack.us/img174/8144/cap3eo5.jpg

Then screwed it back to the heatsink.

http://img147.imageshack.us/img147/6849/cap4gn4.jpg

Finally, I used silicone to bond the engine top to the structure.
