Im stuck between picking my major, but i have plenty of time. im trying to chose between business and some kind of computer programming. im not farmilliar with programming so i was wondering if anybody knew about it. like what could i do in jobs for the future? what kind of classes i have to take? stuff like that. the reason why i ask here is because im sure there are maybe a few programmers here or at least know one considering computers are our hobbies and whatnot.

I haven't done much, if any, programming myself, but from what I've seen/heard from my dad, programming is a somewhat aggravating field if it's your career. One little typo with screw up the code and you have to look through it, etc etc. Correct me guys if I'm wrong about this. I was also thinking about programming and/or some other fields as my major, but let's not steal the thread, lol.

EDIT: One other thing I've noticed that if you want to go into programming, you need to have patience, lol... and I'm not sure whether or not visual problems such as Dyslexia would affect it at all... that would be one of the problems I have, lol.

I would try learning a little bit of programming. Find something simple to teach yourself, I would recommend HTML (I mean the raw code) you can write it in notepad. Visual basic is also simple but you would need to purchase software.

LoL c++ in highschool, I remember finishing programs. (which in highschool were VERY small. [only a couple of pages]) I would go to compile what i thought was the perfect program and end up with like half a page of errors. The most aggravating is when its a small error that starts a chain of errors. I used to spend all of class trying to figure out were all of my errors were coming from only to have one of my friends be like..."dude you forgot a semi-colon." As far as having to search through your code, yeah you could end up doing that but i know a lot of the graphical compilers now adays tell you were the errors occur. The compiler only catches syntax errors though.

It's not really all that bad though, I thoroughly enjoyed it. I'm taking computer science classes this fall when school starts up and I'm looking forward to getting in to programming. If you want to see what kind of courses you will have to take just search around on some college web sites. Most of them list the curriculum for their majors.

I second what chaksq said, try something simple and see if you like it. You dont want to spend a ton of money on something you might end up hating

Both of these are potentially pretty lucrative jobs. I'm sitting my exams at the moment for a Software Engineering degree, and it's ok. Programming is a funny thing-it's not a matter of loving it or hating it, because every language is different, and you can love one language and hate another. Programming is pretty challenging, and you have to move fast too-a lot of what you learn will be useless in 10 years, but your skills are transferable. In something like Business, well, how much can that change?

Personally I enjoy the creativity and challenge offered by programming.

HTML is not programming though. Visual Basic is sort of programming, but a lot of programmers look down on it because it sort of babysits you through it.

Anyway, that's my input. If you have any questions, feel free to PM me.

well....what you could do, is get a masters in business and a minors in computer programming...so you can possibly start your own small coding business and know whats expected from your employees.

I want to start a small computer business and im going to get my majors in business and a minors or double major in computer science.
