It was cheaper.

Forget the postage, they're local so I'll collect them.

May I just ask what is the point in this thread and why is it posted here? Like why not in computer cooling?

i second my fellow SSA

Because it's not really about cooling, but about the fact that a job lot of seven fans is cheaper than one new one.
Still, if someone wishes to move it, then go ahead.

It's more about the fact of how useless it is!

Aww c'mon guys...like you've never posted something completely useless just because you were happy about it.

I'm the same way. I need 2, give me 8. Maybe that's why I have a computer room I can't walk in anymore.

I'll keep quiet about the four printers then...

Hehe sounds like my office!

I am on a purge binge right now, so things will be sent packing to the recycle place.

Lots of good stuff. Don't want to hijack this thread so when I am ready to get rid of worthwhile stuff I will do some sort of contest like TGS does. Name this tool win a drive kind of thingy... (I have half a dozen tools in my tool box older than 90% of you. hell 3 of them are older than me...)

Don't want to hijack this threadGo for it, this thread is pointless anyway, apparently...

Not pointless, I agree with Dave, I have done some WAAAYY off topic posts because I was happy about something... Are any of those fans 3 pin?

I have "harvested" fans from my last 4 dead power supplies. Two were my own PCs and two belonged to other people who just let me have the old broken junk.

I don't know yet, I haven't collected them. I can't get to the store until saturday, so I'll see then. As for rpm, how would I tell?

Surprised no-one picked up on the printer comment. Try some detective work to see what I'm talking about, before I explain it.

I thought the printers thing was joke! Did you seriously pick up 4 printers? I'm waiting to hear what your plan is.

Did you seriously pick up 4 printers?Yup.
I'm waiting to hear what your plan is.If one works, I'll use it. If more than one works, I'll pick the best and eBay the rest.

I collected them this afternoon. The owner of the store recognised me from 30 years ago! We were at college together.

what RPMs do they run atThe one I ended up using, out of the eight I received, was a three pin one which seemed to shift a lot more air than the others, with their molex connectors. According to the BIOS, it runs at 3000 rpm.

The others worked, but didn't seem as efficient as the three pin one. I didn't try the 90mm as it wouldn't fit the case.

post #9 ....hm whats the story behind that.....?Well, if you look at the ebay listing for the fans, look at his feedback for that transaction and look for another transaction with the same buyer(me).

Actually, there's now a third. I just bought tome speakers. For 99p.

p.s. Remember this post (http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/forum/showpost.php?p=72707&postcount=16)? That's the place. I applied for a job there before I knew it was owned by a friend of mine.

its always funny when you meet old friends this way, was he happy to see you ?Yeah, and I was surprised he recognised me. It was 30 years ago...

Then I remembered I'd applied for the job, and he must have known from my CV that he knew me. I suspect that's why I didn't get a chance at the job, since we were 'old buddies' it might be difficult to create the boundary between employer and employee IYKWIM.

so you didn't got the job ?

No, but it's ok as I now have a better one anyway.

I tried a couple of the printers today.

First up, HP 610. powered up ok but as it only has a black cartridge fitted, I couldn't try it. I thought there may be a way to print black only, but not so. It's probably ok but without buying a cartridge, I can't tell for sure.

Next, Epson C84. Worked right away, but the printout was awful. A couple of head cleaning cycles and it's almost perfect. The colour is still a bit rough, but I think I have some cleaning cartridges which will fit so I'll give them a shot.

The other two are older epsons, same style as my old Stylus 600, but not that actual model. Can't remember what they are:

Have fun making a CNC with dinky printer steppers. Old dot matrix printers and some huge laserjets will provide usable motors, but certainly not desirable ones.
