Look at this...

i may have misunderstood, but i was saying the adapter itself would be the same between CD and HD drives

Not sure what you mean. But from what I understand, what he wants to do is run a CD Drive from his laptop in his PC. The IDE's in PC's for running HDD's and CD Drives aren't the same connections as in laptops. I don't know if thats true for Laptop HDD's though.

But anyways, that adapter will let you plug in a laptop drive into your pc. But just in case I don't know what I am talking about, check the back of your drive and see if its IDE or possibly even Sata. If not and if it looks like the ones from Newegg. That adapter is what you want.

I've done a lot of laptop research, and I know that this is not so, unfortunately. :(

As you can see in this picture (http://www.bluelight.com.ar/Productos/CDs/cd-rom%2520adapter-1.jpg) (far left on the bottom piece), that is what a laptop cd/dvd rom slot looks like.

As you can see in this picture (http://lib.store.yahoo.net/lib/cablesonline/MK-004LABEL.JPG) (black slot on side facing viewer), the hard drive slot is a 44 pin version of IDE.

Xcom posted what you are looking for...

That will allow you to connect a slimline cd/dvd to a regular ide cable.
