Well done man! It's a good feeling when you're programming something and it works. If anyone doesn't know it, it's the same sort of feeling you get when you put all the bits in the computer for the first time, hit the power button, and there's a nice whoosh as it all boots up.
The satisfaction of a Job well done. Nothing like it. :D

Dude,
I'm with you. I dabble in the web development(hint, hint, look down). It's a nightmare. When you get something to work it's huge.
The funniest thing is how you learn stuff by shear trial and error. It's bizarre. With web stuff it's upload then check it out in the browser. Over and over and over.
Good on you. I'll probably be coming to you for advice. +Rep

congrats man !
and i can relate to what Dave said lol !
I parted my computer only 4 days after i got it, i chose the parts but they asambled(s) it, but the vid card blew up after 4 days and i had to RMA it, thus had to take it out myself.
But me being me, i took apart the whole thing, just to see if i can put it back in lol
it worked first time :D
congrats again ! and +rep

thank you guys for the extra rep,
hay no problem every one is welcome to ask me questions.. i wont mind putting my thought into the subject.
like on the http front i have only ever used IIS 5.0.. my next step would be to register my own domain, i cant see me doing that soon.. money needs to goto other places
@commando.
what is your http server rig? spec? how are you hosting?
@gt40
haha reminds me of mine saying that.. it was a summer project. got all the parts and the mobo didnt ever work.. but because i was a noob i was looking at all the wrong things trying to get it to work. it took me 6 weeks to get a new one..
plus used the worst book ever. bought it out of pc world and now looking at it the book was outdated for about a year or three
i use the ISS that comes with server 2000, i cba to upgrade to 2003, if i ever buy a machine/server that can handel it and run a domain fairly fast (Last attempt AMD XP 2800 1gb DDR) login took about 5min.

i have a domain controller what runs server 2000 too. my specs on the DC is
3.2ghz p4 cpu
1 gb of ram
and about 1 TB of data..
mine dosn't take long to log in.
my http server on the other hand is crap. i have been having alot of hd problems with it. but its working now.
i have gave my self about 20gb of space
10gb to win xp pro and then
50gb for downloading.. if possible i send every thing to there for back up and then to the dc for handling :D
3 years ago i would never expect of ever doing any thing like this.. its just one big learning curve :D what else can i say i live for working with computers
when i build my machine i will use my current machine fora domain server.

sweet :D have you had much work with networks before? iv also started to look at your new thread
im brill with networks, i love domains but atm my home network is fine as a workgroup, mainly becuase the server isn't powerful enough to run one, the electric is expencive atm, so can't afford to run 24/7. And with the number of computers on the network it dosen't demand a domain yet.
The main advantage of a domain is you don't get the error that "You don't have permissions to view this computer, Please contact your administrator"

lol.. im just starting out. im not very good at it. so alot of moving and switching about will come before im finished. the main reason i have a domain is that every thing is centered and easy to work with over alot of computers.
plus for the experiance too :)
like i said, i LOVE domains, but my server lacks the power to run one, plus it means moving hard drive from machines, i intend to buy new bigger faster drives for the new server, then transfur the data.
Anyone that sets up a domain, Please read the help file first, its soooo useful.

lol, my one was set up via the config my server program at the start.. admins at school laff at me for doing it xD
what drive would you be getting? would it be like sata 3gb? or going more for scsi
i would love scsi, but the size i need to too great and not cost effective.
So i would get 250GB Maxtor SATA II
Twelve of them, 6 for data, 6 for mirror.

oo thats alot of data..
what would you be hosting on your network?
atm im running about 800gb and on hopes and dreams, i cant afford a new hdd to backup every thing.
Drive1: Videos
Drive2: Series
Drive3: Music
Drive4: CD Images
Drive5: Downloads
Drive6: Documents for all machines
Drives 7-12: Backup drives

are there meny users on your lan? i find that when mine is accessing a few files it tends to get laggy.. so i get pissed off with moving files and just use a external hdd..
cd images, im guessing you mean things like iso, daa and img files?
**oo while on this thead, iv started to make my webpages come to life :) still not much there.. i wont advertise the portfolio here but it will be added to my profile soon
theres my machine, bro's machine, the video machine, Download machine, and TV machine. Oh, and the server.
Plus 3laptops

haha same here..
i like the people who try to stand me up by going.. well, we have the normal computer and we also have a laptop with wireless in my bedroom.
and then up stage them by saying well i have a server and 7 other computers..
what isp are you with? im with bt and not enjoying it.. i want my perants to move provider any you could recmommend? iv got bethere broadband service in mind.. there they onyl company i have heard of who dont follow a fair usage policy and also give24 meg bb
that BB provider is UPTO 24mb, use Virgin media (Formally NTL:Telewest)
they provide 10MB constant with no fair usage policy, and there upgrading to 20MB in next few months and still no fair usage policy, and with it being DSL theres no worries about the network lagging, and its gurantteed to be 10/20MB, NOT UPTO.
Welcome to the world of home servers.
Enjoy the frustration and the knowledge contained within.
Oh, and the electric bills. UPS, Redundant power supplies and 24/7 uptime costs $$.
I also have a dc running at home. Server 2k3. Very empty forest. ;)
May I suggest backups in either a raid solution or tape, you're choice.
Ebay has old tape drives and media for cheap, but don't think it's reliable until you actually check each tape out. Some people package up tapes that have gone bad and won't save data properly, specifically in wholesale lots.
Veritas Backup Exec can be gotten for cheap for the older version of it and it still works well enough to do what you need.
As for RAID, other people can tell you more than I.
I need to scrap a couple of old boxes to get Bozo's cluster tut a try(my old ftp & samba servers), I still haven't started that, even with my 'new' box in to work as the control.
