try going through the fonts on word and see how they look. outside of that i'm not very artistic. like you i have all these ideas but when i go to draw them on paper it comes out like crap.

What are the initials?
I'm sure a couple of people here would be glad to give you some ideas.

Maybe cut the letters out of the side of the case and place two different pieces of colored plexi behind each initial in her two favorite colors and have them backlit with a cold cathode behind each also in those colors. If you can't find the colors you want in cold cathodes you can just buy the plain ones which shine white and wrap colored cellophane in the colors that she likes. Also if you can only buy clear plexi you can paint the back of them in the colors she likes and have them backlit with just white cathodes.
Another idea is you could cut out the initials have clear plexi in the holes and trace around the words with EL wire.
You could just have a single side panel and have here initials etched into it and have led's around the side so where there is a disturbance in the surface the etching here initials will be lit up. You could do this and also trace the letters out with EL wire.
You could have the single panel and use a stencil and frost here initials onto the panel using either sandpaper or that frosting spray for shop front windows. and then have the the inside lit with her favorite color.
Umm ideas...
Funky Fonts?
Changing colors sound activated or changing over time?
I am sure what ever you do she will love it.
