I was thinking about getting myself a new camera. I mean a real quality one, a digital SLR. I was looking at the Nikon D40. It's in my price range and seems to be good. But I really have no idea what to look for in a camera. Who wants to help me

A friend of mine bought the Nikon D40 recently and loves it. I bought my ex-girlfriend a Canon RebelXT 8.0 MP and can't say enough good about it. I miss that camera so damn much, it was almost hard to make a picture come out bad with that camera. I think you would be quite happy with either. You can save money by getting just the core camera and choose your own lens's (often on ebay these are sold in packages).

**Edit: Damn, too slow!**

The Nikon D40 (http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikond40/) is a great camera, it's a terriffic bargain and a great introduction to SLR's. That being said, if you are hardcore into photography, you may get frustrated with the limitations of the camera later on. (but then you can just upgrade) :D

I've read that the manual modes on the D40 leave a LOT to be desired.. I havent actually managed to get my hands on one yet, but that's more because I'm a Canon guy than anything.

I've been shooting lately with a Rebel XT (http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canoneos350d/)(8mp) and I'm super impressed with the results. The Rebel XTi (http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canoneos400d/)(10mp) is a bit more pricey, but will give that extra bit of resolution.

The D40 is a solid choice though, and with the kit lens it's a great (http://www.memoryexpress.com/index.php?PageTag=&page=file&memx_menu=EmbedProductDetail.php&DisplayProductID=9944&SID=) deal. WITHOUT (http://vistek.ca/details/details.aspx?WebCode=228219&CategoryID=DigitalSLRs) the kit lens, it's an even better deal, because you can now put that money towards a glass upgrade! :D

Sounds great for me. I need the manual settings, but I still don't need it to be really hardcore or anything like that. I have about $519 to put towards it right now, so I'd need to save up about $100 more. That's easy enough though, so I can afford it. So I guess for now I could save up for the basic camera and have something good to use for now, and then later on when I get more into it I could upgrade.

So I guess I might as well go with this then. Where's a good place to buy it from?

Check ebay.

I bought my Fujifilm 5600 off of ebay (the kit with lenses) and saved over $100 off of the closest local price. Free shipping too!

Check the background of the sellers first, but you should have no issues.

I've shot with a Nikon D40 and D80. I've owned a Canon 30D, Several different Minolta dynaxx/maxxum film cameras, a konica-minolta 5D, Hasselblad 500 ELX (medium format 120mm film camera), I've even got an old Yashica Electro35 GSN!

The DSLR I settled with was the Sony Alpha-100. I find it lighter, more solid, and more compact than most DSLRs. The battery lasts a week of moderately heavy use (100+ photos each day) and it worked great with all my old minolta SLR lenses. Don't be fooled by the fact that it is made by sony. You might think 'But sony have no experience in the DSLR field!' but infact, sony bought out Konica-Minolta's DSLR company a while back.

Although I love the A-100, the colour reproduction of the Nikon D80+ cameras are generaly a little better. Basicly, go to a shop and try them out. I have found that I can take the same photograph with any DSLR, it just takes longer and is less pleasant with some due to overcrowded controls and stuff like silly rotating thumbwheels instead of arrow buttons. Definately go Nikon or Sony. H

Got myself a Nikon D200 10megapixel, and love it. also picked up the dual battery holder, its nice not having to change bats in the middle of shooting pics. and should you run out, a good set of quality rechargables almost make it through a recharge cycle for the original batteries.

about the only thing I would suggest is that you get a large memory card. or several smaller ones... if I shoot in raw format, I only get about 50-60 (17meg per pic) on a 1 gig card. while shooting in jpeg, I can get about 200 ( ~5meg per pic).

as far as quality goes, I really did not want to do the next upgrade and spend double for not much more than 2 extra megapixels...

although this camera is not for everyone it does preform quite, its just a little expensive.

if your interested in a sample picture, pm me and I'll send you some.
