Did you installed the drivers?

Greco101
06-02-2007, 08:38 PM
ASUS P4GV-LA

windows xp home

I'm looking for the drivers now, now on a different computer. I can't seem to find them though... not even at asus

I've read a comment that said it can be.

the board is made by ASUS, but made specially for HP. That suck real time.

What type of internet do you have? Are you using the onboard NIC?

Some ISP's require you to register the MAC address of your NIC in order to get online. If you've changed mobo's (and therefore NIC), then you may need to re-register with your ISP.

Telus uses this system with it's DSL for example.. I'm sure others do as well.

I have cox, should I give them a call?

Greco101
06-02-2007, 09:30 PM
and i dont know what an onboard NIC is

slytherock
06-02-2007, 09:43 PM
After a quick search, the mobo use the realtek rtl8100c drivers.
Witch can be found here LINK (http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=ob-29293-1&lc=en&cc=tr&x=0&dlc=tr&product=468789&os=228&lang=tr&y=0)

i burned them to a disk and installed... still no internet. :(

for some reason its only displaying "local area connection 3"

rather than 1 and 2.

maybe the mb is DOA? everything else seems to be working just fine.

Greco101
06-02-2007, 10:10 PM
almost forgot... i called my isp and they said everything is running strong and the only thing that would need to be changed is if i changed modems.

slytherock
06-02-2007, 10:11 PM
so it see the connection, but no internet... what's your setup, are you using a router? Or you just change the computer from the modem?
In one case r the other, try reseting your router and/or modem. It can be a problem with one of them

Edit: I had a problem once with 3 computers connected to a router. 2 of them had the same IP, so only one could be connect at a time. (And it was automatic IP address... shame on MS ;) ) A reset solved everyting

Greco101

well right now, i keep switching the ecable back and forth from my desktop(internet not working) to this laptop.

No router or firewall

Have you enabled the LAN port yet? In the BIOS?

Luke122
06-02-2007, 10:18 PM
Onboard NIC means that the network port is built onto the mother board. NIC is "network interface card". :)

Here's some help on Cox Cable. (http://support.cox.com/sdccommon/asp/contentredirect.asp) It's titled "Moving Cox internet service to another computer", but it's relevant to you, as it's a new motherboard, so essentially a new computer anyways.

*Edit* Good call Bucko.. I didnt think to mention that. :)

ok, let's troubleshoot it correctly:

1: BIOS = OK
2: Drivers = look ok cause the connection is shown
3: Firewall = no firewall (Have you diseable the windows one?)
4: Have you tried to repair the connection? (Get a new IP?)

Greco101
06-02-2007, 10:30 PM
It's a pretty much new hd because I reformatted right before the computer died completely so no SP2

I tried just clicking "repair" and it failed. then I tried ipconfig /release and cmd froze up for a couple min then said something i dont remember. Ill check really quick though. I did that before the new drivers so maybe that will make a difference.

Greco101
06-02-2007, 10:32 PM
Also, the cable Im using right now for this laptop is the one I'm using for the desktop so i dont believe and of that would make a difference but its worth a try

Greco101
06-02-2007, 10:41 PM
ipconfig

read my ip, subnet and default....

ipconfig /release

"the operation failed as no adapter is in the state permissible for this operation"

slytherock
06-02-2007, 10:43 PM
ok, so the connection is not set. Can I ask you how you installed the drivers?

Greco101
06-02-2007, 10:44 PM
Downloaded them with the laptop, burned them on a cd, then ran them on the desktop.

Bucko
06-02-2007, 10:45 PM
I suspect a driver issue too.
Only because in the time this thread has started to now I have got my new PC connected to the net and it took installing new drivers, enabling the LAN port in the BIOS and a reboot, but once done all I did was connect my cable up and I was away.

Greco101
06-02-2007, 11:19 PM
Did ipconfig again and it didnt read the ip/submask or default. I forgot I tried setting it to use a certain IP instead of automatic.

Tried ipconfig /renew (since it was already dropped) and it gave me "an error occurred while renewing interface lacal area connection 3 : unable to contact your DHCP server. Request has timed out.

It says "Local Area Connection 3
Enabled

I tried hitting repair again and it failed.

Greco101
06-02-2007, 11:25 PM
could perhaps the old motherboards drivers be conflicting with the new motherboards drivers??

slytherock
06-02-2007, 11:27 PM
Let's try something.
Go into the control panel
Select "System"
Under the Hardware tab click on Device manager
then go to the Network adapter
If the drivers are installed, you should see Realteak...
If the drivers have not been installed, you should see a peripheral with a yellow !

in both cases. go to the driver tab and then update drivers. Follow the steps to install them.

Greco101
06-02-2007, 11:32 PM
yep, they're installed but i can't connect to the internet with that computer to update the drivers.

Local Area Connection 3

Why do you have 3 Local area connections?

The easiest way to correct this is removing all of them and creating a new one.

it's not 3 local area, but local area #3
it means it's the third installation. the last number wont change anything

I think you don't have the Realtek Drivers Installed. .

i restarted after the update...

now it changed the name to local area connection 2 all by itself...

i tried ipconfig again. it reads:

connection-specific DNS suffix . : blank
autoconfiguration IP Address. . .: ###.###.###.###
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . .: ###.###.#.#
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . .: blank

I tried ipconfig /release and it just said the same thing

tried ipconfig /renew and it errored

Install windows agian on a separate partition.

You may want to try: sfc /scannow
. .maybe your sys file integrity has been compromised?

Greco101
06-03-2007, 12:34 AM
i'm very tempted to fill this thing with a brick of blackcats and gas then finish it off with my 12 gauge...

06-03-2007, 01:05 AM
Ohaa. . You tried Both.

Your may have to call ur ISP and get them to reneg on there end, and Push DHCP.
Just tell the tech you tried both USB and Ethernet.

Did you plug both of them in at the same time? Don't

Do get mad get even, and on the internet with the thing!

Foreal Delete all the Local Area Connections, Reboot, and let it make you a new one.

When you get it fixed you can say. .HaHaaaa I'm on the Internet now Mobo and do the Banana dance

Greco101
06-03-2007, 01:05 AM

Greco101
06-03-2007, 01:09 AM
lol, no i didn't plug them in both at the same time. i dont get why theyd have to renew on their end if its working with this laptop??

Eclecticos
06-03-2007, 01:15 AM

Uninstall the network drivers and remove all the local area connections from the list.
Reboot. . Then It will search for them. . insert driver disc or floppy.
And make a new Local Area connection (http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/howto_conn_lan.mspx?mfr=true)

oh man this sounds like what happened to me sorta. i got a new hdd and went to install xp on it and everything went great but when i went to go use the internet nothing worked. after getting really pissed i looked for every cd that came with the computer and realized i never installed the drivers for the onboard ethernet plug. after that it worked fine. but from quickly reading through this thread i think thats already been ruled out. so all i can say its i feel your pain.

would this be the proper drive(s)??

Get yourself a copy of knoppix and see if it'll detect the NIC. If it does, then you know it's something buggy with Microsoft (Surprise!).

Download the .ISO here (http://www.knoppix.org/), and burn it as an bootable CD. If you've got third party burning software, make it a data disk. If you don't have a third party burning program, http://isorecorder.alexfeinman.com/isorecorder.htm is a 'powertool' for XP.

I'm guessing KNOPPIX_V5.1.1CD-2007-01-04-EN.iso

anything else?

06-03-2007, 05:55 PM
Nope, just the .ISO. Then, make sure you have boot from CD set in your BIOS. You should be all set. Make sure you burn it as a CD Image.

Greco101
