Okay, my dad doesn't seem to understand this, let's at least clear this up for me (like I need it, durr!).
Which would take more bandwidth and cause three games of WoW (at the same time in the same house on the same internet line)?
A) TeamSpeak on one computer (mine).
B) Three games of WoW running at the same time on three computers in the house (dad's and both brothers').
C) My PC being unplugged because A) seems to be the foocking problem.
EDIT: Changed to foocking due to lack of filter.

The first computer has the best latency. IME
They got you on the far end of the router?
Don't really understand the Question.

My dad goes like this:
His Lappy, hub, internet.
My brothers (both):
Their PC, wireless card, wireless hub, internet
Me:
My PC, hub, hub, hub, internet.
It's basically a question of "which takes more bandwidth, 3 simultaneous copies of WoW running at the same time, or one copy of TS?". A retarded question, nonetheless.

I would assume "3 simultaneous copies of WoW"
Sounds like one hell of a daisy chain ya'll got going on there.
You can download a Bandwidth Meter for them.
Or Network Utilization program.

Well, this is mainly me being pissed because my dad doesn't "get" it. This is just like how my uncle had a bad experience with a cheapass watercooling rig and now that's all **** too. Oh well... I'd still like someone to come up with some sort of proof, like a simple explanation that may be easy for him to understand.

Well you can goto PC Pitstop (http://pcpitstop.com/internet/default.asp) For bandwidth test. .I know thats not what your looking for. Uhh.
Something like this would do the trick:

You are using hubs there is part of the problem. Also why do you have to go through an extra hub?
Hubs are silly as they just it just takes in the signal boosts it and rebroadcasts it to every port. This causes collisions to occur
You should be using managed switches or bet yet routers. If I was you I would get a 8 port router and wifi all in one that would solve all your problems.
Also people with that train of though with the whole water cooling thingy really ****s me.

My room is on the other side of the house, and it would take about a 150ft or something like that of cable to reach here, and cables that long are expensive, and I don't have wireless (yet), and wireless is a bit more... lossy. The wifi hub is directly connected to the router for the interweb.
The water cooling deal pisses me off too. Ignorance is _not_ bliss, it's a royal pain in the ass.

Lan cable is cheap it is just big name brands charge stupid prices for it and its like $25 for 20m in a plastic bag covered in branding of cat 6 cable which you don't need.. I got to my local computer store and they have a drum of cat5 like 2km long and they just reel off how much I want I go away get a milkshake while they crimp it for me a wind it into a nice loop for me to carry home and the charge me stuff all. Also you can buy your own reel of it and a crimping tool it will save you money in the long run. I have a tool but I never use it as I love milkshakes.
So go out and go to a store and get them to make you some up. Or use routers. Or are you just using the hubs as signal boosters along the way? you don't need to though but what ever.

i vaguely remember you talking about how you dad or uncle doesn't like water cooling what was the whole story behind that again? how does it effect you? do you share a family computer like me (:() so you have to get a the go ahead to mod anything.

The three copies of WoW are gonna pull more bandwidth than one copy of TS, or Ventrilo, for that matter.
Look at it this way: WoW is pulling constantly, as it's a very graphically intense game. TS only pulls when data is being sent by one of your guildies via a microphone.
Now if someone is streaming music in TS, then yeah, it's gonna eat some more bandwidth, but still nowhere near the amount that the three copies of WoW are gonna eat.
--Edit: Or I could be completely full of it and the bandwidth is being sucked up by whoever is downloading the pr0n!

I have three hubs because that's the easiest way to connect my PC to the web, it's kind of a long way away from the router and our crawlspace under the house doesn't quite go far enough to run one down there. We have about four computers, my PC, my bro's PC, my other bro's lappy, my dad's lappy, and my dad's work lappy... well, five, all hooked up to the same internet connection. I'm the one that chats on TS and it's usually like four people on there with 25kbps and just moderate conversation.
Coming from someone who is currently running a TS server. Your data throughput is going to be nominal. You might transfer 1/12th the packets that WOW does.
It's all about how much data is being transferred. True, the basic idea of voice is often heavier on networks than data, but once you start using compression and client side processing(which TS does), your data rates are incredibly minimal. This isn't ye old phone system. On the moderate to ****ty codecs, 56k users don't have problems.
Compare that to a game that has multiple variables to contend with. All of the graphic processing is done on the local machine with games, it's the instruction sets controlling the graphics and retaining information that needs to be recited, like character info, damage, interaction, etc etc.
The easiest way to convince your dad is packet numbers.
Spend 2 hours on TS one night and record the number of packets your machine sends and receives. Do the exact same thing with WOW one night and show him the difference. The more packets, the more traffic. Specifically with that ****ty ass hub nonsense. 1 hub, fine. That many and you're just asking for network slowdown. Spend 20 bucks and buy a ****ing switch off ebay. 20mbps vs 100mbps. Not to mention no collisions.
Hell, if you will pay for shipping, I will make you a 150ft cable. I have a couple of boxes of CAT5 and a crimper.

I was pissed about the lack of internet for a period of time last night and ordered a wireless card for my PC. It was like $26 with shipping. I'll link it later. I now have something else I've found to spend my money on, the new Linkin Park album, a crapload better than the last two combined and multiplied by 12.

Is there no chance of convincing your parents to buy a wifi/wired router?
If you want to be "mean", I'm pretty sure you can limit your brothers' connection speed so you get a better speed. I have no clue how though...
You buy CDs still? Get with the 21st century: download it, legally of course. :D Then you can just buy the songs you want.

Okay, that's it, my dad is officially a f***ing retard. He still thinks that TS takes up more per second than WoW does after five hours. IT DOES NOT TAKE UP MUCH BANDWIDTH AT ALL YOU A******!!! And then he sends my smelly turd of a brother in and he slams the door open and asks me the one question I've come to hate with the power of a thousand suns. Oh, Anthony feels like ****, let's go piss him off and make him feel worse, I feel like whenever I talk to these people I'm talking to a wall. I'm about to smash my head into the f***ing wall until I fall unconscious.
Censored so maybe, just maybe, I don't get a temporary banning.
I'm just sick of my family being retarded. I'm gonna do a study or something later after work, maybe talk with nil8 for a couple hours, if he's up to it, and show him how many packets, how much data, etc. it used. I'll then have him play WoW for the same amount of time as I talked on TS and see what we get. Let's see if his IQ is high enough to even comprehend that. F***ing a******.

I'm just sick of ignorance, it's driving me insane. Ignorance and general stupidity, when I feel like crap like I do now, it gets to me more. I'll try to not do this again, at least I didn't throw anything across the room this time. I don't need another patch of dried sour milk on the floor again, that was gross.

Sorry that you're not feeling too good. Sucks when you're in a bad mood and then someone says something dumb. And then you get pissed, and they say something dumb again, and then your head explodes. Worst feeling ever.
And I can just imagine what that milk smelt like. :dead:

Yeah, it permeated the whole room... luckily I managed to zone it out, lol. I don't remember if I cleaned it up or not, that may be something to look into. I just feel like crap, my glucose level is shot, my allergies are driving me nuts, I'm tired, and I have have to go to KFC later to work, the fire me and have me work out the rest of the schedule, what BS. Well, the one manager was pissed because I had to take off time from work so that I could make progress in the real world, driver's ed, last minute project for school (not my fault this time, the school pulled it on me), court a few months ago, etc. etc. I've gone through a lot recently, and now I need a break from the stress... I'ma see if I can't have a LAN party with some friends or something. Have everyone get Stalker and off we go! That game looks awesome, first person Oblivion, lol. Speaking of which, I want to get that too. They need multiplayer "campaign" versions of both.

Let me get this straight: They fired you yet they expect you to work the rest of this scheduled week?
That reeks of bull****. I would have told them to go get stuffed.
Kinda like what I feel like telling the union. But that's a thread that will not be discussed here, because a few of us might be up to something.

No big deal. I was gonna give 'em my two weeks notice pretty soon anyway. I do have to say that what the one manager did pissed a lot of people off, including the manager whom hired me in the first place. I see part of the problem as me working with the same manager (the one whom fired me) all the time. I only worked with the other manager that I got along with well once every few weeks. That there is a problem, and they gave me crap hours, the busy days that almost killed me each time I worked. Well, not killed, but made me pretty much pass out when I got home. Minimum wage is not worth that amount of work.

Had to comment on this. Sorry ahead of time for the hijack.
I buy CD's still and always will. The sound quality is better, you get extras (like art work and sometimes freebie tickets), I can d'load the songs to _any_ player, create lossless copies and the average price per song is less than the $.99 that craptunes (< insert random music download service here) charges.
Hell they had to pry my turntable out of my hands to get me to go to cd's.... I just miss the large album art and liner notes.... Really though I still have my turntable and about 100 or so albums (got rid of most of them).
Back to your regularly scheduled thread....
xRyokenx: I understand about the ignorance. I had one of those days yesterday where I felt like an idiot magnet. The worst part was the guy in the lexus that moved into my lane forcing me off the road (then honked at ME!). That brand new car now has a size 12 dent in the passenger door and an imprint of my fist in the hood.
Really though Family can be the worst. Deep breath, walk around the block and try again. And I am sure that being sick does not help at ALL.

Same here with CDs, no password required, and the quality control, lol.
Yeah, I'm calming down... music helps, it always has, always will, take that from me, I don't wanna be around when that happens.
I don't think driving is going to help my blood pressure, I had been becoming a bit happier and less stressed, but that seems to have reverted back... from now on I'm taking my meds, no matter how much a pain it is, whether it's 2 am or whenever. I'd take a nap before work, but I think I have to be there at 4:00... and I don't have a phone book, we had six, now we have none, what the hell.

BTW one way to prove the bandwidth usage is to fire up each program (TS or WoW) and run it (lots of chatter on TS or broadcast music to test), while on another system run the bandwidth test from here; http://www.dslreports.com/speedtest?java=1
That should give a fair comparison of usage on the line.
EDIT: Plus it has a nice speed graphic that may or may not impress. Like this;

I checked after looking at how much data was sent one night, and it was like two megs either way... I told him that and that stumped him, hee hee. It lags at random and his ping will go crazy, but I think that's the server or something.

Yeah that upload is because we have a T1 line here that is _supposed_ to give us 1.5 down and 1.5 up.
At home mine is around 7350 down and 325 up. I pay for 6 down and 386k up

Dude that is messed up. I am glad I don't have to deal with that s***. My parents know nothing about the computers. However my friend's father is like that. Says stupid stuff about the computer he poorly assembled and overheats it constantly. He won't listen to any cooling advice.
As for your hubs, is a super long cable that much more expensive than several useless hubs plus individual wires running to each. You can have a several connected hubs running through your house but not one wire set to take minimal space. Just staple it to the ceiling if it is in the way, probably would look better than several hubs here and there.

I know have wireless for my main, and wired as the backup. Works good that way. Thanks for the advice though, I may use that in the future.
