I have had a few problems with my LimeWire lately, it doesn't boot up and creates an error log mentioning something about java... any ideas?

Bizarre. Have you tried updating your Java platform? If worst comes to worst just re-install it.

Careful guys. P2P.. piracy.. not good.

I think Limewire IS the problem.
Like tybrenis said: try reinstalling Java, starting by an update. It had one last week if I remember well

No one said anything about piracy. yet. let's keep it that way in this thread.

Theoretically P2P platforms are "intended" to exchange files of a non-copyrighted nature, so I guess short trouble shooting questions are not against the rules. As long as we don't see lots of chatter about them and definately no posting about illegal trading, but that goes without saying.

Yep, it's been discussed multiple times on these boards, bittorrent is _not_ illegal, but how some people use it is. It's one of the main ways to get system updates/software on Linux boxes. Using it for music, movies, etc. is illegal though.

Things I would do:

1. Reinstall Java/Update or reinstall Limewire/Update.
2. Back up anything you want saved incase things go to ****.
3. If all else fails, ditch Limewire and get a different program.

Now I know bittorrent is legal (technically), but I'm not sure the mods stances on other bittorrent things, so suffice to say you have many more options besides Limewire.

As jon said there is nothing wrong with it when it is used properly - that is legally! So lets keep it that way and be careful not to tread on the thin ice!

Limewire blows. I can get things off of Google faster. All you have to know what to do is manipulate some simple short strings of code and huzzah, whatever you want. Or just ask your buddy to e-mail his homework to you instead of getting all fancy about it. =/

ok so i have a question, not to cahnge topic or butt into the convo, but what if you miss a show on tv or the show gets canceled. is it illegal to download it with a torrent or something?

and like everyone says limewire sucks. if i need a patch or something i just use utorrent.

1. Technically, yes, it is.
2. Yes Limewire sucks.
3. Yep, like I said, a lot of people use torrents to distribute software (especially the Linux world). If the company is distributing it, it isn't illegal to download. It's when you download copywrited material to get around paying for it that it is.

It matters on where you live. In the US, it is illegal. In the UK, it's fuzzy/still being debated. In many countries, no. The reason is because it's US copyright law, not international copyright law. That and the distributing items via a broadcast service makes things difficult.

One of the biggest questions is that if I have cable and I video tape a show to watch later, is it illegal? Now, change that to DVR. Is it illegal? Now, convert the DVR information into something a computer can understand and decode. Is that illegal? That's what the law is dealing with, because that's how the process works.

Torrents are completely legal. It's the information being shared by the users of the torrent system that can be illegal. Torrents are a great distribution system that allows members of online communities to help distribute files they think are worthwhile. Like seeding the latest alpha release of a linux distro, for example. It's all about that age-old concept of sharing.

Other p2p methods have tendencies to have more overhead, less file integrity, adware, bloatware, and be generally less useful because you must use X program to use this p2p protocol. The reason for torrents flourishing is because it's open source, and the community has the ability to develop programs around the protocol that are different, have different features & abilities and can preform amazingly efficiently as well, considering the relative difficulty in transferring over large volumes of information without a loss in data integrity.

I think I can hear the back row sleeping...

nil8, too true. My DVR has Firewire built in and the ports are active. So if I wanted to make copies of my TV programs I could in theory just record to my laptop and then post on the internet. All I've really tried for is to get a program my store manager wanted to watch but I couldn't find any good free video downloading software to get picture image.

Anywho back on subject. I've always just gone around the hassles of Limewire and reinstalled it when I had a problem. Mostly software jacking. Sometimes it like to start up on its own. Very annoying when playing WoW then suddenly no bandwidth to play on because its trying to keep an active download.

1. Thanks for all the help but none of it helped. Still broken. Uninstalled and reinstalled Limewire. Uninstalled and reinstalled Java minus it's latest update and then redid Limewire. Added the update and redid Limewire. Still broken. Woe is me.

2. NO I am not pirating or sharing pirated software, music, images, etc...

3. Nope, Limewire doesn't suck... until now that it's broken... now it sucks.

4. No I don't know how to manipulate short strings of code and if you aren't at a Ren-Faire why are you saying Huzzah?

1. I suggest a new downloader then.
2. Don't worry, nobody is accusing you of anything.
3. I suppose it's a matter of opinion.
4. ...No answer. Though I suggest learning some coding... It's quite fun.

Deinstall both L/W & Java
Check there are no files left on the machine manually
Search the registry for Limewire and delete anything
Reboot
Reinstall Java
Reinstall Limewire

If that doesn't work it suggests something in your windows is broken: a .dll that either Limewire or Java rely upon, for example. You could try rolling back windows to the start or fresh installing. Personally I would do it because I like Limewire and when of the apps I use a lot dies the computer is broken as far as I am concerned - for some it might be a chore.

Pretty sure, however I would advise not discussing these types of things because they're against the rules.

I flatout suggest to uninstall it and walk away. Limewire is probably the worst P2P client to use because you can get a virus or anything you don't want sooooooo easily. Use something else that is easier and more..... legal.

http://www.gameboy-advance.net/gba_roms/make_gba_roms.htm

A buddy of mine has one of these.. You can backup all your game carts to the pc. Then he got a "blank" game cart thats 256MB and was able to put a bunch of his backups on it, so he doesn't have to carry multiple carts around.

Back on topic.. Limewire has always been a little buggy in my opinion. What was the last thing you installed before it went haywire? It could be some sort of conflict.

Main thing with Limewire is to be aware of what you are downloading. An MP3 of an independent poet reading a three minute work should be 2 -3 megs. If its 91.4kb it aint that - it's a virus or trojan.
