View Full Version : Is there a way to broadcast a video using VLC?
Like say I wanted to watch a video with someone, or perhaps had my webcam open in VLC and wanted to broadcast it to someone. I see a bunch of options for streaming stuff. Anyone know how I could do it?

Google my friend..

I have used it to stream video to my PDA, but it was kind of buggy, but I mainly blame that on the beta version of VLC for PocketPC.
You will probably need to make some router changes if you want to share with someone over the internet.
Any idea what I would nee to change on my router, and how to do it?

Well it depends on the method you choose. But which ever, you will need to forward what ever port you choose on your router to the IP address of the machine that is streaming the media.

Anyways, I'm not sure how to properly port forward. I have a Linksys WRT54G.

Ok .. Lets give this a shot..
Open VLC..
Then got to File>Wizard (or Press CTRL+W)
Then make sure that "Stream to network" is selected.
Click Next
Now Click "Choose..."
Then Click on the "Direct Show" tab
Make sure your Video and Audio devices are correct.
Then Click OK
Then Click Next
Under Streaming method.. select HTTP
On the next screen, stream ASF is the default and works fine for me so select it.
Then Click Next
In the TTL box place the number 1 and then click Finish
Ok now your streaming media
For your router you will need to forward port 8080 to the IP address of the machine that your running VLC on.
That should do it!
For someone to connect all they need to do is open VLC then under FILE>Open Network Stream (CTRL+N) Select HTTP/HTTPS/FTP/MMS and in the box put "http://youroutsideIPorDynDNSaddress:8080 and they should see your stream.
If you don't know your outside IP address, I suggest www.whatismyip.com
Good Luck and hope this helps.
I'll have to setup my computer to have a static IP first. I guess I'll do this all tomorrow.

Not really .. you should be able to use the one that was assigned via DHCP.
