Epa!

Hello guys. :)

I come to you with yet more of my computer sheenannigans [sp?].

My rig has one internal hdd 300, and I have an external 250GB (usb).

The 250 I haven't used for a while (2 months?).
I just plugged it in, and... it's... well... "gone".

It pops-up as drive letter J, but... it appears not to be formatted.

So I headed over to Computer Management (right click My Computer, Manage).
There, I see my main 300 drive, with its partitions.
Fine in that front.

Then, I see the drive J, and it has no file system (FAT/NTFS).
It shows 232.88GB of capacity, and 232.88GB of free space.

Now, I had a lot of data in there.

I've learned three things right now:
1- If you haven't needed something for 2 months, chill out.
2- I was conned out of some GBs (250 vs 232 unformatted).
3- This must be really simple.

Why do I think it's simple?
Cause, well, I haven't formatted it.
And for it to just go blank like that... it seems quite odd.

Does anybody know if there's a handy tool for this?
Like, Partition Magic or Ghost?

Very muchas thanks guys in advance,

I'm thinking... :)

Best,
-AJ

If you need to recover files from the drive then File Scavenger is your best bet, works great in these situations.

and Jon said about, File scavanger is a good bet, or if you have, load it with linux if you can find someone thats got it, partiton magic is good, just be careful though, or you could lose all your data.

I think solutions hvae been mentionned, and are also the best bet I can find. Now the reason why it may have been erased. Probably magnetic. A large amount of magnetism can cause this effect on drives.
It remember me a little story:
I was in a dvd store. when I enter the store the thief system started beeping.
The casher took my backpak asking me if I have some cv/dvd in it.
I: yes (I'm an editor and also make some DVD authoring, so I always have dvd on me...)
And add that I also have a HDD and a couple of mini dv.
Casher: I will demagnetise it, so it will stop beeping everytime you enter here (I go there about 3 times/week)
I: No, I said that I have a hdd ans some dv in there...
casher: I can assure you, nothing will be erased, If it does, I'll pay you new ones.

Knowing that my miniDV were brand new, and the hdd was the backup of my main rig I said ok.

And that's how I got my second external HDD :)

Getdataback is a great program for drive recovery, it's worked for me 100% of the time, including after a format/reinstall of XP by a knucklehead. Recovered 90% of the data on the drive with no issues, and 5% more with lots of swearing. :)

FileScavenger FTW!!!

Yup, can't go wrong with Filescavenger. I recommend it every time someone has a problem like this and only one time did it not recover the files, it's a hell of a nice utility.
