I recently (ie. half an hour ago) inherited a motherboard, processor, video card and RAM from a friend and have been trying to get it to work. It didn't come with a hard drive, Cd drive or power supply so just to test it I plugged into an old system I had lying around.

This is the setup as it stands now. You can see what I mean by just plugged everything in to test.

And thats great. Except it doesn't work (that would be why this is in the Fix It Shop :p ). When I switch it on, the heatsink fans startup, as does the hard drive and cd, but nothing happens on the monitor. Just the message "Please check video cable connection.

Any ideas what it could be? I'm sorry but I don't really have specs for the motherboard and whatnot, just these pics.

Video Card

And the guts of that system is an old HP Pavilion 6618 (Linky (http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/product?product=58803&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&lang=en&cc=us))
It should also be noted that the monitor is plugged into the VGA port on the motherboard, not the videocard itself, as it only has s-video and dvi ouputs.

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated as this new setup would be a huge upgrade to my current system. (http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/product?product=58803&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&lang=en&cc=us)

Well, not everything is plugged in:

You might need to plug in the 4-pin plug on the motherboard (near the heatsink fan)

When you do use the video card, that needs it's own power plug too.

CPU and/or motherboard are most likely fried. I would suggest getting a new microATX board and chip to drop in there.

I've got a HP Pavilion here too--same problem. I replaced the CPU recently and now have the same exact problems you're having.

I'm planning on getting a new motherboard in a couple months for it.

wait a second, that board, aside from the pci slot, looks like my old computer mobo. mine is a gigabyte is that one? you should be able to fine the model number near the heatsinks.

ya i would try that.

I third that, nothing will work if it's not plugued.
Ahd you can removed that cd wire, not useful anymore.

I didn't even see that--look what I circled:

I'm guessing your PSU is P4 rated--if not, snag the one out of the case you inherited. You're gonna have to plug the 4 pin connector in as well--this could very well be the culprit.

Firstly thanks for your responses guys. I appreciate the help. Now..

That will be the very next thing I do. I didn't even see that. Thanks!

I probably didn't explain myself properly. The green board is the Pavilion. The brown one is the one I'm trying to get work. I only mentioned that because the hard drive I was using came out of the Pavilion, in case HP was doing something funky to stop them being used in other PC's. However, the board probably is fried. The guy I got it off took the CPU out a bit to look at, handled the board extensively and I did bring the bits home in a plastic bag.:D

It is a gigabyte. That silver square above (in the picture) the heatsink says gigabyte, but the flash got it. The model number is GA8SIMLH Rev 3.2.

Unfortunately for me, its 9 o'clock in the morning here and I need to be at work at 10, so I'm not going to have a chance to tinker with this till tomorrow but I'm really excited to try it now! Thanks again for all your help!

I know this is kinda nit-picky, but you should clean all that dust out of the heatsink so it doesn't overheat.

Do you know what video card that is by the way; looks like a Nvidia 6000 series card.
