View Full Version : How NOT to put a train back on the tracks.

Some other pics from work.
A train went through a set of catch points and derailed. The wagons have already been removed, but it left the engine still in the dirt.

The next step is to get the engine back on the rails, so they bring in a big rail crane to help lift it back on. No big deal, trains derail and we are geared up to fix it.

The next bit isn't really meant to happen...

Nothing left to do but get some more cranes to fix the mess.

My god!

I love it!

Heavy machinery!
Not the fact that these are 'bad' situations, but all those trains and big cranes!

Hey, Bucko, more pics from work when possible!!!

PS: What do you mean by "catch points"? :)

Catch points are a single switch rail that is designed to derail the train. It stops the train from possibly hitting another train head on by sending the train off into the dirt.
Basically the rail opens and the train derails.

I guess no one did any math on the weight differentials and angles. Crane weighs X pounds, engine weighs X amount of pounds. Plus you'd have to factor in the stability of the "end of the tracks" that was dumb.

~Reminds me of when we got my friends 4-runner stuck in the mud, Huge drop off rut behind a hill "Im talkin' thick 3' cake mud no ordinary mud. First we call up some help so my uncle shows up with his nissan Frontier it gets stuck in like 30 seconds. .lol

Then we called someone with a 2 ton Duallie it yanks my uncles fronter bumper clean off! Then he gets out and and I'm LMAO about the bumper. . The four runner is sunk up past the wheel wells and the duallie has soon dug himself into a nice little rut up by the road. . so were all covered head to toe in mud getting sticks and wood planks trying to fish the dually out. .

So here i was bouncing up and down on the wood with mud building up on my legs and covering me. . my friend mike and a 2 other dudes on the bumper hopping up and down and one of the planks go's flying and smashes the headlight on my uncles truck. So me being me. . I can halp but laugh at the top of my lungs. . my uncles cussing me and shoved me in the mud. . said something to the effect of "You little expletive" its not funny. .

So The guy in the dually out of the mud and he says Im outta here. Good Luck. . .By that time the four runner is deep sunk and mud is flowing into the cab. We all getting bit by millions of misquotes, and to the furthest extent of drunk.

So My uncle called a wrecker and the guys says "I don't know what you gonna do, but I ain't gettin my truck anywhere near that mud." He puts a handful of dip in lip and says well. . I gueszse sinceze im out here I'll go ahead and pull the nissan out. Spits a gob of chaw on his boot and goes to work.

So the frontier is out and my uncle is trying to get ahold of his insurance company. . not in the slightest bit worried about getting us out anymore. . .while were digging mudd out of the cab of the four runner. . and a guy in a el camino shows up out of the blue and say "my God what that hell
Have you boys got yourself into". . so we give him a beer hoping he will atleast try to help. . he puts on hes knee highs and walks out there and says "You might as well get some shovels out and finish er' off she' buried.

So I walk off and come back with some crossed sticks wound together with a vine and and stick the cross in the ground next to it. And everyone thought that was the funniest thing ever. .

Meanwhile the dude. . i think his name was steve or something was in the four runner kinda pouting about it. . saying this is my only car how am i supposed to get to work now.

So The dood in the el camino pulls this huge chain outta the back and it wont reach. . so the only other rope we have is a puny little yellow rope. . you know the kind. . needless to say that breaks. . so we call the wrecker back get a longer chain, but its still not long enough. . so the el camino backs up and starts to make a rut. So now everyone is pissy.

The wrecker offers to leave the chain behind. .
So there we are 4am still drinking trying to devise a plan. :)

So how did we all get out of the mud?
We convinced my uncle to pull his truck back out there on a much exaggerated route. . hooked the four runner to the truck and the truck to the el camino. . The dood in the el camino says give it everything ya got. So they back up and snatch the four runner out of the mud, and half up the hill. .

They back up again, by this time the el camino in on the pavement roasting the tires. He pulled us all out and then with the frontier and four runner bass-akward he decides he gonna pull us on down the road to. . lol. . about a 1/4mile down the road he stop with a big grin on his face and says "How that for getting ya'll out" we offer him some cans of beer and he says got my own and offers us some of his.

The End.

Funnily enough I've had experience in getting 4WD's stuck in hard places...

Heh heh. A friend of mine was riding his four wheeler during a hurricane and rolled it into a ditch and got stuck under it. Fortunately he got enough adrenalin going to kick it off and get out and somehow managed to get it out of the ditch and ride home.

haha i've seen something like this happen before (pictures anyway) where a car(or truck) fell in the water so a crane goes to get it out then it falls in then a second crane getting the first crane getting the car/truck falls in then a third one finally gets the all out.

Bucko; All you needed was a snorkel on that thing and it would have barely slowed down.

I have rescued a few people with my landcruiser. One guy in a Jeep was a little embarrassed to ask for help (his girlfriend wasn't) but we saw they needed help. I jumped out of the 'cruiser, wrapped my strap around the frame of his Jeep and hooked it to my tow hooks. Backed up and pulled him out of the ditch with no effort. He offers to unlock the hubs and I told him to forget it, I am still in 2WD. He didn't believe me, so I showed him. He was a little miffed... We saw the same couple a few days later on the same trail and had some beers with them. He got over it.

I have a few more from Rubicon that are amusing too. Nothing like cracking a trans axle open on a rock!

I have a lot more experience since then AB. I was only 17 when I did that.
Live and learn, hey?

Hehe nice pictures. More tax payer dollars going down the drain to fix the engine, the crane the tracks etc....

Where was that?

Actually, no. The driver of the train was to blame, so the freight company has to pay ALL expenses.
It's only tax payer money when a Government owned train derails and it's the trains fault. Example:

If a truck hits a train at a level crossing, it's the truck drivers responsibility to pay for it all. Example:

That derailment was at Sefton Park Junction.

I've seen that series before and I reckon the last picture is photoshopped myself.

Indeed, it is. If you look carefully, neither the truck or the crane part of it are tilted out of alignment from where they were in the previous picture.

Besides, I saw that a while ago before whoever photoshopped it did so. :)

Shut up!:p I guess I am really that bad at detecting a photoshop chop. I see it now; the people are in the same position as a few pictures before.

Wow, still funny though...
