I've never really heard of this but It'd be nice to know so everyone can lengthen the life of their lcd's.

Mod some case fans into the back of it maybe?
**lol oops. I didn't really read what you were asking, I thought you said something on the lines of lengthening the life of a monitor.**
Black is supposed to take less energy I've heard. So... I guess black? There was a digg awhile back about how much energy would be saved if google went black instead of white. or something like that.
It shouldn't matter really though. The price for monitors gets cheaper all the time. once they figure out the OLED thing, LCD prices will drop alot I bet. Theres also something about TV's using Lasers or something like that. I think I heard its supposed to be out this fall.

**oops again**
It seems that Airbozo got it the right way around. btw, heres the Digg article. LINK (http://digg.com/design/Black_Google_Would_Save_3_000_Megawatts_a_Year)

Well this is only my own theory, but here goes;
On an LCD monitor it takes the most voltage to display black, since the crystals must twist to the maximum distortion to block the light. It takes almost NO voltage to the crystals to achieve white since at this state the crystals are relaxed allowing the back light to shine through. So my vote would be for white IF you must leave it on. But then you have to worry about the back light burning out.
BTW this is the exact opposite on plasma displays (most voltage to display white).

I just keep my Brightness levels on low unless I'm gaming. .
Better for the Eyes Better for the LCD. . Thats my hypothesis on it anyway.
I avoid Wallpapers with sun spots or really bright areas just to be on the safe side.
You can feel the difference if you put you hand to it.

makes sense, thats why plasma's are best for darker things since it displays black alot better.
as for life span i shut my lcd off when i'm not using it (i tend to switch user and go do something for a hour or to but i leave the pc on)

Well of course shut it down when not using it, I was just curious about when just chatting on AIM, etc. Thanks for the replies guys... this forum is better than most computer classes learning wise.

It's even better when I'm not having one of my "I'm not with, I AM stupid" days. But that only happens about once a year. ;)
