View Full Version : AGP / PCI-E Risers

Recently decided to revisit a PC mod myself and some friends attempted last summer. The original case (designed to be suitcase-like) was made out of wood, covered in pleather. This summer we've decided to move to an aluminum case. Now we've already thrown out the idea of using an actual suitcase because we intend to incorporate a 19" flat screen. We want to piece together our own case. Couple questions...

1) In order to save on width, we want to use a right angle riser card for the agp or pci-e slot (depending on which mobo we use). We have a 6800 Vanilla or a x1950pro to use in each slot respectively. Last summer we purchased an agp right angle from eBay. However, we couldn't get any signal to the monitor using the right angler riser, and shortly thereafter we smelt something start to burn. I was curious - has anyone ever used a right angle successfully? Is there a certain wattage/amperage rating I need to look for while purchasing?

2) I need as much information about "Chemical Metal" / "JB Weld" / any other metal epoxy/hardener/adhesive combination. Would the compound be strong enough to hold together an aluminum box. Use this for an idea of what I'm referring to: http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/forum/showthread.php?t=8838
(scroll down to "synthetic metal")
Or would I have to reinforce the edges with an L shaped bracket along the perimeter?

3) Related to question #2 -- would 1/16th inch or 1.5mm aluminum be thick enough to support all the PC components (mobo w. ram/ proc/ hs/ right angle/graphics, psu, hdd, fans, opti-drive) on one side and 19" lcd on the other side? - *think suitcase like hinge style*

4) Riveting as an alternative to adhesive/chemical welding. How to get Hp/Compaq/Dell/Antec quality like rivets - the ones that don't stick out above the surface. Any suggestions?

That's all for now, thanks for any advice help you can offer.

I deleted your other thread that was the exact same thing as this one.

We aren't your personal support team, please be patient and someone will answer if and when they know. It's only been 4 hours. Sheesh!

Grrrr Bucko you Super-Mod, you deleted the thread when I was posting in it! lol. That was a bummer. Now to paraphrase.

1. Risers aren't too good. Stay away from them if possible.

2. JB Weld is strong, but I wouldn't trust it for a whole case. A combination of rivets/bolts would be better.

3. I don't know.

4. I've never seen rivets that don't stick out, but go to a hardware store and ask them about rivets.

Actually AGP and PCI risers (http://www.orbitmicro.com/product_lines/riser_cards/pcie_riser_cards.html)and right angle adaptors are perfectly fine to use in any project.

@Maleficus - Thanks
@Bucko - If people weren't looking for support, they wouldn't use this forum. The only reason I took up a couple KB of your precious forum's server hdd space is because I thought that by posting in two different sections I would reach more people - you know in case some don't check both forum sections...
@Crimson Sky - Any ideas the first AGP riser we used got fried? You mentioned only PCI risers, what about PCI Express risers?

if you clicked on the link he gave you then you would see that it lists all, agp, pci, and pci express up to X16

Maybe I was thinking about those extension cables?

That's just my bad paraphrasing.

No idea why one would "fry" except that perhaps you caused a short somewhere because of the 90 degree angle. You have to be extra careful with risers because they change the dynamics of the entire mobo layout. They are obviously just small physical extensions with no circuitry to fry, so the problem could have been any number of factors caused by improper installation or consideration when matching the power requirements of the GFX card. It's best to email the a store that specializes in risers and ask what the best choice is for your particular card.

And as an FYI, multiple postings on the same topic is generally frowned upon by every forum you'll visit. We aren't a support forum with technicians standing by to answer your questions. We'll get to it when we feel like it, and then only when it interests us ;)

Here is a riser card I used in this project (http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/index.php?module=photoshare&func=showimages&fid=8)from my Modding Book, (which I suggest you run out and BUY asap ;) ) The MaximumPC Guide to Extreme PC Mods (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0789731924/thebestcase06-20/002-8841673-2223222?creative=327641&camp=14573&link_code=as1). I even installed a shield with a 40mm fan to cool the GFX card from underneath.

@Crimson Sky - Nice mod, where did you purchase your riser from? That's a 9800 yes? Custom built fan holder? If not, where did you get it?

Thanks for all the help guys.

Btw - Crimson, I went to local bookstore, they didn't have you're mod book (small town - go figure). I'll have to pick it up when I'm back in Houston.

It's a custom built fan holder, you can even see his pencil marks on it in the first pic where it isn't painted.
