View Full Version : Jungle Tumble - Joint project by Elenril and Cymae

Cymae

Well, a little girlpower is needed around here, so we've decided to start a project together! In comes Jungle Tumble!!

Elenril has agreed to do the actual construction, as i have limited supplies and equipment, and I'll do the concept and design! The idea is to do a ducted cooling system which will take the shape of vines and brambles (hopefully). I'm working on concept designs atm, will post soon!!

WooHoo! Co-op projects are fun, looking forward to seeing what you come up with. Is Elenril still working on the other project also?

My teachers seem to have had a meeting, during which they decided they shall heap as many assignments onto me before the end of term as possible. Only 2 more days till school holidays though, so I'll have some free time then for both mods.

Ok, I've finished the preliminary sketch, just gonna redo it in photoshop and then i'll post it

Edit: Here we are, preliminary sketch:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v99/Cymae/casemodedited.jpg

the base of the case is going to be green with darker and lighter shades of green flicked on to get a messy kinda grassy look. on top of that i was thinking we'd throw over some camo netting to give our vines something to sit on. The main feature of this case is the ducted airflow, which has exhaust fans and is all interconnected. I'll try to colour it now

Cymae
06-27-2007, 10:16 AM
colour version! I just got the photos of the case we're using so i'll try to do a 3D render soonish....its gettin kinda late

Fire would be very cool, it might be a tad... complicated, but I'm sure with girlpower we can pull anything off.

My reply was really unhelpful, sorry. It's a bit late to think of how to make a fire breathing case.

Bucko
06-27-2007, 11:00 AM
Fire would be bad. It's far too dangerous to have a real flame and no-one is allowed to post about ways to do that.

However, using silk, a fan and some LEDs can give a good effect that is quite safe.

Like you can find on this site (http://www.hauntedfog.com/Fake%20Fire.htm)

Close your mouth more, and go mod something dude.

That was uncalled for. Be nice or i'll box both your ears. Now shake hands like good boys and pat the bunny: :bunny: isnt it cute?! ^_^

And I'm not ALLOWED to do fire? its against the forum rules? thats wierd..how bout just glowing red eyes then Elenril?

what about smoke emitters? make it all hazy and jungle like?

In all seriousness though, i wanted to do the window with green tinted perspex. I'm still not sure bout the netting...It's sorta starting to look jungle-bookish, and frankly i kinda like it..

Bucko

Right, I'm putting on my moderator hat here.
This thread is about Cymae and Elenril's project, not about how much crap Electicos posts on the forum.
I know it, you know it, Electicos knows it.

Lets keep this thread both civil AND on topic please. Any further posts like the above ones will be deleted.

And I'm not ALLOWED to do fire? its against the forum rules? thats wierd..how bout just glowing red eyes then Elenril?

Bucko said posting about how to set things on fire isn't allowed, so I guess so... Unless I read what he said wrong.

Glowing eyes or a glowing carving? What kind of eyes would fit with a jungle theme? Hmm... If we carve the entire panel and make it glow, that'd be cool. How much are we going to carve?

Bucko
06-27-2007, 11:24 AM
You are allowed to do whatever you like to your case, you just can't post how to make flames on the forum. It came up in another thread and Crimson Sky said no talk of how to do it.

Cymae
06-27-2007, 11:24 AM
i don't assume it'd be too massive..i don't know bout you but my claywork skills aren't that awesome. But that's not a bad idea..if you want to mail me the right panel ill work on it while you do the left :D

As for the glowing thingy.. I reckon keep it simple...are we allowed to talk about how to do a water feature Bucko?

oh..right. simple. Just a carving i think. maybe with eyes that are attatched to some sort of step motor and go left and right occasionally just to look creepy.

Cymae
06-27-2007, 11:28 AM
You could mod a mini-fogger in there! They are not that big, and it would be sweet!! I don't know how it would affect the parts, but I know that paul did it in the doom3 mod.. he had it so it looked like smoke coming out of the sides of the case.. I remember some old toy train sets that had these little mini foggers built into the locomotives, so it looked like their smoke stacks were actually "chugging" out smoke.. I will find some links:

Fog MAchines: LINK (http://www.eliminatorlightingdirect.com/Fog_Machines_and_Fog_Juice_s/22.htm?click=2)

I'm sure there are many more.. I am looking for the trains I was talking about right now on eBay.. I'll post back if I can find them..

-------------------------------

RE: Electicos and my post towards him -

He's had it coming for a while.. I promise to end it though, on with the mod!!

thank you for the info..that's starting to look kinda out of my budget though...don't know bout Elenril

Bucko
06-27-2007, 11:30 AM
Did you see the silk flame idea I posted the link too? It would be cheap to do, like less than $20 cheap.

and yes you can talk about the water feature. It's only using real flames that is frowned upon.

Elenril
06-27-2007, 11:32 AM
I really like the mysterious jungle temple kind of thing too. The netting was good for keeping vines and stuff in place, so we could still use it for that, or maybe use something else for the same purpose, but cheaper and less conspicious?

I still think carving the entire panel would look good, even if it is more complex, but since when did complex take away from a jungle themed mod? I'll photoshop an idea tomorrow. Well today, but later. The step motor idea is good too.

EDIT: How much does the fog machine cost? I'm at half dialup speed, I can't load anything else. My budget's pretty tight too, but using my 1337 Asian shopping skills I might be able to find it cheaper somewhere.

Cymae
06-27-2007, 11:33 AM
i was kinda kidding about the flames..i don't see how it'd really fit in. its jungle themed, not Raiders of the lost ark ;) I'm just tired and dramatic hehe...the smoke emitter would be cool if we could find a small and not too expensive one....we could male a swamp or something

im assuming with the motor, youd make it go really slowly soevery 5 seconds the tooth would click a pin which would push hte eyes left then right again quickly..i'm not entirely sure on how i will get this to work though...any suggestions are welcome

Only problem I see is those are made from water evaporation. And we all know:
water + elecronic parts = problems

The one I used to have one on a model train used a light machine oil to make the smoke. A few drops was all that is required.

If i can find one of those toy locomotives on ebay, im sure it wouldn't be more than 10 - 15$ with shipping.

I'll let you know and post when I find it.. I'm a little under the weather the last couple days. Think I have a stomach flu, so I'm slower and more irritable than usual! :dead:
Sorry!

$10-15 with shipping... wait, does that include shipping or not? *slightly confused* Take your time, you've helped heaps and I really appreciate it, hope your stomach flu eases up soon.

Ok, after giving the motor a little thought, I'd say it'd go somehting like this: perhaps using a clock stepper or something, you'd have the motor with the teeth and when it spins slowly it pushes up the pin, which slides on the 45 degree plane, pushing the eyes to the left and cocking a spring. when the motor steps and the pin falls into the next groove, the spring pushes the eyes back the original position, so you get shifty eyes....how does that sound?

Another way would be to use one of these from Jaycar (http://jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=YG2743&CATID=&keywords=tamiya&SPECIAL=&form=KEYWORD&ProdCodeOnly=&Keyword1=&Keyword2=&pageNumber=&priceMin=&priceMax=&SUBCATID=)

http://img292.imageshack.us/img292/8588/productlarge979057d12bbis8.jpg

You have the eyes hooked up similar to how you mention, except this would make them look left and right slowly by having it run like a steam train powers it's wheels.

Something like this:

http://img329.imageshack.us/img329/6872/shiftyeyesfh2.jpg

Cymae
06-27-2007, 12:34 PM
i dont really get it..can you explain how the motor works? maybe i'll understand a bit better

Bucko
06-27-2007, 12:38 PM
The cross thing on the side of the motor spins slowly due to the gearing.
In that picture I posted, you have to imagine that rod is between the cross and the eyes is moving back and forth. It's converting a circular motion to a for and aft motion, moving the eyes left and right.

Cymae
06-27-2007, 12:40 PM
ahhh, so its still spring loaded but instead of the motor pushing up it pushes straight across and simplifies it. of course! how do you get the eyes fixed onto the motor?

edit: never mind, i had a brainwave...you'd leave enough space on the base for the joints of the eye to swing back and forward in an arc..so dig it out practically....

Bucko
06-27-2007, 12:49 PM
No spring loading, they just work off the motor.

This would be a view from the bottom. The eyes are on a pivot with a lever coming out the back and connected to the rod going to the motor. So as the motor moves the rod back and forth, the eyes move left to right and back again.

Bucko
06-27-2007, 12:56 PM
Thanks. I do my best.

Cymae
06-27-2007, 01:00 PM
that wont work though, because as the eyes reach the center point the connector will be at full height
you need to dig out a groove for it to swing and push it with pins left and right. the pin is longer when straight than when bent, it wont work if they're rigid.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v99/Cymae/pivot.gif

edit: unless you use pistons or something which expand and contract their length, but thats just overkill..

Bucko
06-27-2007, 01:06 PM
Between the rod on the back of the eyes and the rod going to the motor, you have a pivot point.
If it wasn't 3am and I didn't have to get up at 7.30am, I would do a better diagram to show you exacly how it would work.

Right now I need some sleep.

One of my other hobbies is Asian Ball-Jointed Dolls. They have eyes that look really realistic, come in a variety of materials, sizes, colours etc. They might be a bit expensive for our purpose though, because they're so realistic. What kind of eyes were you looking for?

Cymae

thats a bad idea. We need em perfectly round so they'll roll in the sockets.

Elenril

I'll work on the eyes here and ship it to you with instructions, hows that sound? i gotta do em before you do the carving which is the hard bit

haha. Elenril - I'll have to have it done early so you can begin on the sculpture. you'll have to know exactly how it works to see how we're going to put it in there. We can leave the mounting till the meetup, but they've got to be made so you can measure. Also we've got to extrude the side panel to accomodate the eye mechanism and not mess with the motherboard tray.

Elenril
06-29-2007, 08:55 AM
Would bondo be ok to use for extruding the side panel?

Cymae
06-29-2007, 09:00 AM
I'm really not sure..I think its more of a paste that hardens than clay.. I don't think you can mould it. Can anyone clarify?

Bucko
06-29-2007, 09:55 AM
Bondo starts out fairly soft as a paste you mix and hardens to a solid finish. You can get rough shapes as it dries by moving the bondo with your fingers and then using a sharp utility knife you can do other rough shaping before it fully hardens, but while it's still soft.
After that it's pretty much sanding to get the shapes, but a sharp small chisel could be used to do some carving in the hard bondo.

Ok, i'm working tech support a few hours this week as a favour to a friend of mine, who in exchange for me doing that, is going to write me a program for motion capture through a webcam that can program a servo to move. eg: our carving eyeballs are going to follow people as they walk past! So, thanks to my dear father, who has done a lot of running around for me and my newly discovered love of computer modding, we have a case!

It's a Gateway GP6-450, an old hunk of junk he found while scavenging the roadside during the general cleanup. I'll be getting rid of the all the logos and stuff, cleaning it, and then painting it.

Anyone know if it's a full or mid tower?

Hopefully the paint I got is a good colour, I couldn't test it because it was all locked up. It was such a pain to buy, I went to Bunnings, waited for 20 minutes for a salesperson to unlock it for me, before I realised I was under 18 and can't buy spraypaint.

Cymae bought some yellow test LEDs for the eyes. She's going to paint over the whole thing with a rocky finish, so it'll look like rock but glow yellow underneath.

This looks like a really cool mod, I'm looking forward to seeing what you can come up with.

If you were looking for a cool way to integrate a 'water' feature into your mod one of the first things that came to mind when I saw this worklog was Apocalypto and specifically those big wide waterfalls. I was thinking that if you were going to use a little fog machine if you could get one that made denser fog you could use it to run down a little river and over some falls...

EDIT: Nevermind, I got it :) This case just screams of plastic, it's annoying.

I wouldn't recommend it either, it's do-able but I don't think it would look as good as it sounds. Waterfalls have an appealing look because of the mist and spray toward the base, but keep in mind that in a tiny waterfall it just plainly pours into a basin. This guy (http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/forum/showthread.php?t=8102&page=4)made a Far Cry mod that was really cool and built a waterfall in it but you can hardly tell it's there.

I did a bit of modding yesterday as a form of stress relief from my exams. Just painting the case green, but it's a start:

Here is the reflection and smoothness of the paint:

Cymae, is that ok? Do you want it smoother so it's more shiny? I'm going to give it another coat to get rid of some tiny chips and stuff in the paint, and then clear coat it, but do you want it to be mirror-reflective?

You could wetsand it really flat with a high grit sandpaper too. Nice warm water with a few drops of dish soap = win.

And XcOM is spot on with the rubbing compound. I need to pick up some of the 3M stuff myself.
