I have seen LCD monitors used this way, not sure about laptops though. I have heard it's not real easy to get a laptop screen to work but I could very well be wrong about that.

The hardest thing about trying to use a laptop monitor is getting a controller for it. I know it has been done for some model lap top screens, but it isn't the easiest.

After taking apart my laptop a few days ago, I'm going to say no, its not possible. Not unless you had some kid of adapter thingy, which I don't think exists. They might, but I doubt it. I think we had someone here ask this before, and the answer was no. But I've been wrong before, but one thing I do know is, if it is possible, it wont be easy. and if it is easy, it won't be cheap.

But I'll tell you what you can do.

Throw your laptop motherboard into your case. Then its totally possible. Your just going to be severely limited in performance because unless you spend 2k your only going to get so much power out of a laptop with not a whole lot of upgrade-ability options. But like I said, if you spend something like 2k on the new laptops, they're basically desktops inside of laptop shell.

Another option is to just wait. With paper thin OLED screens coming out within the next year or so, its going to really open up the "mod-ability" options for us.

And of course, you have the option of pulling a Defyant. I don't know if anyone else has modded a LCD screen into the side of their computer, but I know that Defyant is famous for it. If you don't know who Defyant is, take out your "modding bible" and look under "mod gods". It should be right under "Paul Capello - aka Crimson Sky". ;)

LCD screens in laptops use onboard controller cards to translate the vga signal onto the screen. What you CAN do is get the model number of the LCD, and google the model number with LCD controller behind it. You *might* get lucky, and find a control board for it. If so, expect to pay 100-400$ depending on options (resolution, inputs, audio, tv tuner, etc).

I had a 27" HDTV donated to me that had a dead power supply. After some testing, it turned out the controller board was dead, and power supply was fine. There was no replacement controller board from the manufacturer, and a company in Florida (Digitalview) offered to make me a custom board with custom bios, which would have cost me nearly $1000. For that price, I would have just gone and bought a 27" hdtv again.

Hate to bust your bubble, but it's not likely to work. SnowFire's idea of mounting the whole laptop inside the case is a good one.. since the laptop is only a couple inches thick (at the VERY most) anyways, fitting the whole assembly into the side of the case wouldnt be *too* hard.. plus then you can put a normal PC in there too, and use the laptop just to display junk on the side, or to run some sort of server app, or even as a RDP client (remote desktop) to control the PC, but still output your games to a monitor.

If you are still bent on using the LCD from the laptop, check out:

for possible controller cards. Good luck!

There's someone on this forum that has that. I believe it's in a thread related to "how many computers do you own." or "pictures of your workspace."

EDIT:: posted too soon... it was Defyant's rig I was talking about.
