Hi guys,
I've been shortlisted for the final ten in my category by Canon for The Independent's 'Secret Playgrounds' photography competition.

This would mean SO MUCH to me to win, as it would give my CV a HUGE advantage over others when I look for a photography job in the summer! It's up to the public to vote for the winner!
So, PLEASE visit

http://www.theindependentonline.co.uk/canon/

and vote for my image 'Flames' which is the first one in the 'Entertainment' category.

Thanks for your support guys!
H

Thanks guys! :)
And yeah the prize is an Eos 400D and on canon's website it says that the winner's image will be 'published' by canon but I've no idea what that involves...
Thanks again,
H

When does it end? I just came to take a quick break from preparing to leave for NY tomorrow. I'll vote when I get there, not too much time now (yet I took time to say this, durr! lol).

I voted for yours, but if I hadn't known that was yours I would have voted for that anyway, it was the coolest "entertainment" photo. Good Luck!

They take your photo, and use it in advertisements in magazines for Canon cameras. I've seen this before. Also, I voted for ya.

Me and Spacehonkey are probably the only ones that got that one.

I get it (I'm pretty sure), but then again, my mom was a E-6 in the navy, my dad an E-5, and my stepdad was a Lance Corporal in the army.

Just voted again. Last night I was at work, but right now I'm home. Seriously though.. yours is the best in it's category. My other favorite would be Corfe Castle. Why is it that you appear to be standing still, but the camera captured all the movements from the fire? Obviously, since you were flairing bottles, you have to move around. Is it a light thing? Does the camera only capture your stance just before the shutter closes or how exactly is that done?

ya i want to know that too... i understand that you used a slower shuttter speed and i know that helps with the streaks but your still with no trails. maybe your not moving fast enough... who knows!

Well, there are two ways to do it.... both involve 2 things
1. you must make sure that you move your body enough that it won't expose crisp during the movement of the light source (the fire in that pic)
2. after 20 seconds or so of moving the light source to make the trails either do what I did and hold the light source still whilst staying as still as you can for the final 10 seconds of the exposure, or have a friend ready with another camera (like a film camera with no film loaded) to hit the flash at the end and ensure a crisp exposure of your body.

Here's another photo of mine which I just stumbled across - same kinda technique but using a blue phone screen and a beer bottle.
