As you no doubt noticed from the full case pictures, the optical drive is mounted sideways if you're using the case in a tower configuration. This can be a bit awkward, as many drives require you to use tiny locking tabs to hold the CD or DVD in place when the drive is mounted sideways. Pioneer slot drives are a godsend in this particular case, but Pioneer doesn't offer slot-based recordable drives.(Link to original article (http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1697,1626666,00.asp))

So the answer is yes, regular drives can be used sideways but it may be annoying to use the tabs. (think of the Xbox 360 when vertical)

thankz for the link, my DVDdrive has those "tabs" to hold the disk when its sideways. i just wanted to make sure the entire drive worked properly when mounted vertical [the lasers amd litltle motors inside]. guess it does :D

It does.

Just dont mount them on a ballbearing .. CD's at several thousand RPM's have been known to shatter into several thousand shards of very fast moving debris if the axis of the drive is moved too rapidly whilst spinning.

Why would you mount an optical drive on "ball bearings?" :? (besides that not even making sense) CD drives should be mounted securely.

(Why are you resurrecting so many dead threads too?)

(Why are you resurrecting so many dead threads too?)

I think if you really want to ask someone this question it is better asked in a PM frankly.

I'm pretty new to the forum. I don't know how everything works. I am finding my way around. I'm doing my best.

BUT the passive-aggressive nature of your question makes me want to vomit.

If that isn't a good enough answer for you PM me or one of the forum moderators and lets go from ther :)

Sounds a bit exaggerated but ok...

Seeing as you did bring this thread to life, would you mind elaborating on what you meant by "just dont mount them on a ball bearing"?

You said it yourself.

peace out kiddies, it seems that you have had an off day redundent, but i side with CB, you should take any diffrences like that with either a polite PM, or contact a member of staff, or click the report this post button at the bottom of posts, next to the rap button.

You can get DVD Slot Burners, I googled it and this site came up:

http://www.esbuy.com/paujsllidv.html

Should check it out, would work much better than the tray style dvd roms

The above is a Panasonic, here's a Pioneer one going for 68 bucks and supports Dual Layer burning:
