I installed some security updates from M$ and it totally borked my healthy XP system. I had to nuke and pave. I would not recommend any updates offered in July. ye be warned.

Symptoms:

-Constant rebooting after welcome screen or 1 minute after OS is loaded.
-Asks to activate windows over and over
-Borks the Cryptography dll's and BITS registries

Can NOT get into Safe Mode or roll back updates.

I've updated, but the only real trouble I've had was a few times after I rebooted it wanted to go through a disk check.

Just doesn't seem like something OS-related... That's a thinker, for sure.

I just updated both my systems and the SO's system last night and have not seen issues yet, but I didn't do anything after the install. I will keep an eye out.

Already made those updates on 3 computers at home. No problems at all...

Did you already activate it?

yeah a real puzzler. I havent installed the July updates, and so far after 4 times nuke/pave it seems OK. we will see I guess. I thought it might be a bad sector on the HDD, but who knows. I went with XP Pro on the 4th try.

was activated 4 years ago. I was getting very nasty BSODs as part of the probs as well. I have a sneaky suspicion it might be some .NET Framework issue, as that update was what i installed yesterday in the package.

That's the problem. M$ has determined you got your money's worth and need to upgrade to vista...

:D

5 years with the same Windows!!! I'm impress, I reinstall everything every year... I still don't trust MS. You must take good care of your system  Any tips to share? :)

Actually slashdot covered an article today about a recent .net framework update screwing up servers and workstations all over the place.

For some it's a problem, for others it's not. No reason as to why is known as far as I can tell. Thank the gods we have WSUS here and know how to use it.

Do custom install and unselect the .net framework update. Either that or possibly drop your OS like an anvil on a rotten pumpkin. There is no known recovery from the .net framework update making your OS die.

My PC just updated with the .Net framework too. No problems here.

(Running Windows Media Center Edition 2002 with SP2)

EDIT: Nil, what's "WSUS?"

I thought that might be the case, and after your reply I can see that I'm not alone. My video editing programs and even ATI Catalyst products require at least ver.2.0 of dotnet. all seems to be ok now...as far as dropping the OS, thats out of the question.

I"m curious Crimson Sky, what are you using for editing. And for what purpose?
I'm with Avid Xpress por HD at home and Adrenline at work. (and FinalCut but it's mac and we both don't care ;) )

Same here. Cool thing is, we're fully redundant. No big deal for me though.. I just would have had to keep clearing alarms out of Openview. Our MS Apps group would have had to deal with the server going kaput.

I use Sony Vegas, After Effects and Sound Forge for editing the videos I make for projects and such. nothing hardcore, but I'm good at it.

I'm sure you are, I saw your Grindhouse preview, and liked it alot. Just give avid a try and you'll be hooked ;)
this ad I made just won 2 prizes in Canada for best social ad. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WMLZ_y2lHRM)
George thurston (main character) was a big star in quebec during the 70, and he died 3 weeks ago of a colorectal cancer. The song he sing was originally a disco song, it's about how life is good. In this ad, it's the same words, but about how life CAN be good.

Avid is great, if you can afford about $25k to get the real deal with the HD Mojo ;)

slytherock
07-15-2007, 12:14 AM
It's not that pricy, you can have the software and the Mojo for about 3k.
If you want something for real broadcast online, then you have to pay 25k, but better pay a 1-2 day session for 2k... And build your offline with the 3k version.

Crimson Sky

when you add all the tape decks, audio mixers, software, harddrives, monitors and such to do editing right, it can easily reach 25k. I know because the studio I work for has such a set up ;)

EDIT: Nil, what's "WSUS?"

WSUS is what Microsoft uses to push out updates in corporate enviroments. It's a management tool that was web-based, now MMC-based that allows blanketed approval and downloading from your WSUS server inside of your network, instead of the more bandwidth-intensive workstation downloads from the MS servers.

Basically, it centralizes and manages windows updates. Good stuff. Very useful.
One of the better tools MS has managed to make work outside of AD.
