Project Log: Cynical Home Theater Personal Computer

This is going to be known as the poor man's HTPC. the case is going to be scavenged from a previous mod, "Death before Dishonnor". I stopped halfway in that

mod because i was building a case for a gaming rig and i realized that i only play video games 1 hour a week at most. So i decided instead to make a machine I would

benefit more from, a HTPC. so here is my log, hopefully you will see something that will intrest you and maybe even inspire you.

so i basically modified my Antec Sonata. im planning to mod the case so it sits on its side. i have to completly redo the front. Ill put up some sketches up later.

the front is going to feature the famous PSone 5inch screen, power and reset button, and a couple of switches for fans and LEDs. i plan on making the power and reset

switches. they are going to look like a Bulgin and Infiniti's power on switch had a baby :D

the left side of the PC is going to have a custom paintjob done by yours truly featuring the case's name. The entire case is going to have a new paint job for top to

bottom. I aquired the case a couple months ago from a friend of a friend for $20. the paint was chipped and scratched away but most of the case parts came with it so i

was happy.

lets get to it....

FRONT PANEL SUPPORTS:
i removed all of the front and scrapped it. I bought angle aluminum and a ruler/T-square for those all important 90 deg lines.
http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n161/elbarto241/photobucketaccnt016.jpg

i cut two pieces and placed them on top and bottom of the front to support the panel that is going to be placed. measured, cut, drilled, tapped, and mounted.
http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n161/elbarto241/photobucketaccnt058.jpg
here is a close up of the bolts that hold the angle to the frame...
http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n161/elbarto241/photobucketaccnt059.jpg
here are the bolts which are going to be used through out the entire case, some might be longer depending on the task.

Here`s a little tip for the cheap-o`s out there! if you really want a well centered hole from drilling there are either two ways: but a center punch or do it the CHEAP

WAY! grab a hammer and....

A NAIL!
http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n161/elbarto241/photobucketaccnt038.jpg
the rest is pretty self-explanitory. use the nail to centerpunch the hole and then drill through, you will see the difference and notice the lack of skidding from the drill.

FRONT PANEL:
ill save everyone the grief and summurize. we dont need pictures of tapped panels with lines on em :D
measured, cut, filed, drilled, tapped, and mounted
http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n161/elbarto241/cynicalHTPC004.jpg
ignore the taped side with the bad cuts, will all be gone next time you see it.
the front panel still isnt done and needs to be measured for future cuts.

thats all for tonight, tired and going to try to grab some shuteye. update tomorrow and expecting my PSone LCD from fedEX :D
feel free to leave comments and critizism :D i promise i wont cry :P

@ jdbnsn + DrumThumper: ive always wanted a HTPC and i finally grew em to build one :D

FRESH FROM FEDEX:
arrived here not too long ago. here she is, a little more than i wanted to spend but in my opinion well worth it.

came with the 5inch LCD [still with the protective plastic on], the power cord, and the manuals.

and the money shot.

GUT TAT MOTHER`:
alright here is the PSone screen gutted down to its core [pardon the flash]
http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n161/elbarto241/cynicalHTPC02002.jpg

i stripped all of the parts that could be taken off and labeled them carefully. hopefully the next time i put this back together and turn it on it wont go BOOM :D
http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n161/elbarto241/cynicalHTPC02005.jpg

packaged it back together with bubble wrap and put it back in the box so i wouldnt lose any crucial parts.

Here is a pic of the plastic shell that ill probably end up throwing away, no need for it now

going to add a poll soon and another update tomorrow if all goes well.

If you are looking into a fan controller I have to recommend the L.I.S. M.Play Blast. It's ideal for HTPC's, nicest looking display I've seen for a controller, has remote which can power on/off the PC, compatible with WinXP Media Center.

Personally, I don't see the need for a fan controller in an HTPC.

However, if one has a remote control built in like the one jbd mentioned, then yes, by all means, add it!

One other area where I could see a fan controller used is if you were to stealth the PC inside of an older receiver box and wanted to keep all the knobs functional. To me, that would be very damn cool (pun intended).

One thing I want in a HTPC; is silence. I don't want to hear the fans while I'm listenning to a movie. Unlenss it's a fanless HTPC, go for the fan controller.

jdbnsn, thanks for the incredible link [+rep]. you took care of 4things for me there: VFD, fan controller, IR receiver/remote, and remote iTunes operation. :D thanks again for that.

anyway i need a little feedback on the software part of my media center. for the front end software. i was thinking one of the following programs should do it: xLobby or MEDIAPORTAL. if any one has any other FREE programs that yall can recommend that would be great.

It's too bad XBMC isnt completely ported.. would make a KILLER frontend for a HTPC. As it is, it's a damn fine interface for an Xbox HTPC. :D

Plus it's skinnable..

Although I didn't like it at first, I have grown quite fond of WinXP Media Center 2005. And even though it's far from free, I think you'll find it functions seamlessly with that LIS controller and you can pick up a Media Center specific wireless keyboard on ebay which integrates perfectly for a HTPC. The Media Center control panel is the easiest to use that I have tried.

IMMM BACK!!

yep. expect a steady flow of updates [hopefully] the next couple of weeks :devious: . back to my house in houston with the garage full of tools we all love :D. when i started the mod i was at my sister's apartment helping her get settled in down at Clear Lake. the only tools i brought with me down there was my crappy dremel  and my tap kit . alright enough blabbing, lets get down to the good stuff

my garage [techically my dads but what is his, is mines :D]
http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n161/elbarto241/DSC00517.jpg

first thing i needed to cut up was the mobo tray.
http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n161/elbarto241/DSC00510.jpg
it needed about an 1" shaved off the sides and at the same time that was going to remove the left side of the HDD cage. i decided to let my dad cut it with the angle grider since he offered, i would of done it myself but that tool scares the crap out of me :D might cut my finger off with it :dead:
http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n161/elbarto241/DSC00514.jpg
and thats right, he aint even wearing a shirt. LOL

still need to straighten out lots of the parts by sanding... such a time consuming part >.<

here is the DVD mount that i made in my sister's apartment. the front mounting bolts holds the DVD to the case. i decided that the DVD was going to be mounted so the tray comes out from the side... i also added slots on the side to allow the DVD be ajusted by sliding along the rail. that feature will be very helpful when i stealth the front of the DVD tray later.

BOTTOM:

*the shell of the DVD drive was bolted alone, so i wouldnt damage the critcal componets :D

here is a CRUDE mockup of how the componets are going to be layed out...
http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n161/elbarto241/DSC00523.jpg

FRONT: http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n161/elbarto241/DSC00526.jpg

the componets are going to be layed out so that the HDD sit on the right side, the DVD lays on the top left, and the LCD right smack in the middle.

thats all for tonight, thanks for reading...
