Anyone into guns? I enjoy a nice slow day out shooting my Remington 597. I don't do much hunting, at least with a .22, but I love to have some target fun. So, heres some pics of my favorite rifle.

Not much has been done to it, only a scope, bipod, etc.

I like the .22 because I can hear at the end of the day and my wallet isn't to light.

You should really wear hearing protection, even with a .22

I have a breach loading single barrel 12 gauge I like to take out for clay shoots from time to time.

I also have a Marlin .22 semi auto rifle. Fun gun to teach people on.

At the moment I'm saving up for an M1 Carbine. I'm going to hunt deer this fall.

I sold my Model 94 Winchester 30-30 when I moved. That was a mistake. I miss that rifle.

Oh, and just to make me happy, my state is repealing the need for the sheriff to sign for you to own a handgun. Woot.

I have an old Marlin .22 too, except mine is boltaction.

I also have a Winchester 1300 Defender w/ pistol grip and I have a .22/410 savage.

Haha. You made my day.

I too agree that you should always wear ear protection although I should probably take my own advice  . Even a .22 can cause permanent hearing damage.

I also have a 12 gauge, winchester lever action 30-30 , 357 magnum revolver (unmarked), .22 revolver, and a hand made rifle that my grandfather machined. He made everything but the barrel but I don't have any idea what it shoots. These were all handed down to me from my grandfather so I don't shoot them much. To much sentimental value so they stay locked up. You know, I don't even know were the key is. Im currently saving for a Remington 700 308 to add.

I've shot three .22 Rifles before (Bolt action long stock, bolt action short stock, pump action, all .22lr).

I want to fire off my dad's Winchester .30-06. It's a very nice gun. 5-round internal clip, iron sights, pretty basic, but loud and powerful.

My grandpa makes guns. He's got gun racks full of random rifles he's made in his house. Everything from .22's to .45's if I'm not mistaken. He made all three .22lr rifles that I've fired.

I really want a WWII-era scoped bolt-action rifle. Winchester, Karabiner 98K, Mosin-Nagant, I don't really care. I just have this love for bolt-action rifles. Hell, I'd be fine with any bolt-action rifle, really (I should talk to my Grandpa and see if I can get a .22 when I go up to his house next, preferrably the long stock bolt action, fun little gun to shoot (and accurate too, I hit my target 7 times out of 8))

My dad collects guns. He goes shooting every weekend Him and his shooting friends. I go too. My favorite gun that I ever shot was his friends M60 not automatic of course. We have loads of guns. He buying a S&W500 the biggest pistol caliber made today. I am not gonna shoot that. But I love shooting my .357 magnum  its great fun

Cool lookin' SIG-Sauer 3k.

Also, how many Karabiner 98k's does a guy need? =o At least thin out that selection with some Mosin Nagant M44 Carbines, Springfields, SVT40's, M1 Garands, etc...

Omega

Speaking of M1 Garands and SVT40's, I would LOVE to own a Gas-rifle. The accuracy and power of a bolt-action, with much less reload time (assuming that the rifle has an En Bloc clip, like that of the M1 Garand), and less time between shots.

And, like all gun discussions, we delve into the world of the large, bizarre, specialized and stuff that 90% of us will never see or touch, but can enjoy from video games.
There's nothing wrong with fantasy, but really, aren't they just big expensive deadly toys once we cross into this realm?

Try a lever action rifle before you go into assault rifles.
Try a breach loader.
Try a double barrel.
Try a single action.

Yes, these are slower, but they make you take your time, pace your shots, and learn what the basics of shooting are all about. And let's face it, all the firepower in the world doesn't mean a damn thing if you can't make your shots hit your target.

Ha!

All I need now is to finish the linux kernel on the Flux Capacitor for the MechWarrior Mach VII 2040 War Tank I've been moddin' behind my house.
Hydraulic arms with high-res angle sensors will provide accurate aiming. A 42k BTU a/c system with level 42 air filtration system ensures constant environmental control for me, and the passangers.
Power is provided by a safe and reliable nuclear reactor system. It's actually 21 different, totally separate power systems. It's complicated, but redundancy is on a level 8... 10 nines of uptime! (!!99.99999999%!!!) Of those 21 systems, 15 are located outside the main diamond-reinforced tantalum-zirconium-titanium alloy, with a GPa of >12,000.
For safety's sake, they've been engineered with a protective "ark" around them... impenetrable and indestructible even if free-falled from orbit straight to a solid impact with the ground.
Elaborating more about the aiming systems, a new development which we were able to download was cameras mounted on the tips of the "bullets". This is, of course, appart from the other twenty dozen other cameras throughout the tank.

nil8, I totally agree with you in pacing your shots.
Our engagement simulations showed that we required a minimum spec of 1,500 rounds, of 1.00lb depleted uranium smart-projectiles per second.
We were able to achieve those numbers, and actually 'overclock' (quite literally guys!) the guns' load/feed systems for 4 second bursts of 3,000 rounds per second.
Happy as we were, along we had to counter-balance two major factors.
The first was a heat issue... which came at the expense of our propellant choice for the rounds [[it's still classified, but suffice to say it's an extension of long-silenced Russian research into gamma-ray-excited expansion of a hydrazine mixture... injected a two thousandth of a inch ahead of a pre-mix between oxygen, and secret substance/liquid/solid/gel/gas/plasma.]]
Firing at the standard 2,400rps, the guns threw out about 240,000 BTU.
Quick recap of solution::: 1- radiators running on nano-sized bucky balls as a heat exchange client, and 2- ejectable iron/plasma rods. [[btw, These rods are super cool! The barrels take a solid, 3" diameter by 18" long rod of iron, and turn it into liquid metal... then further shoot it out at high speed into the ground... for cooling in the next 120 hours.]]
Wwwuhheee!!

Oh yeah, the second factor because of the guns.
It was the recoil.
The power the guns generated to the tank were inmense! In the order of over 100,000 lbs of thrust.
So we have retroactive rockets at the rear of the tank, that can shift a full 360 degrees around the waist. These provide 30% of the force needed to hold the tank in-place. The other 70% comes from 4 foot long spikes (two of 'em) that penetrate the ground at aprox. Mach 1.4... all 4 feet of the run.
With these, the tank is able to fire while standing still.

Two other modes of firing such high power weapons... the first is running.
The piloto needs to run with the tank full speed (>220MPH), then shoot the guns.
You have to be aware that the tank will slow down in about 3.8 seconds.

The second mode is to leap into the air, preferrable assisted by the jet systems, and shoot "down" towards your target.
Now we've tried this, and this is craploads of fun!
If you're good enough at it, you can stay hovering in the air, while shooting your guns.
The best we've managed has been 18 seconds of flight... you have to stop eventually because of overheating.
But still, much much fun.

I've fired all of those except a double barrel. Well, and assault rifles. I only really like assault rifles in videogames or in concept, unless I was a soldier I would much rather fire sniper rifles, bolt-actions, etc. Higher ROF doesn't make it a better weapon (in most cases).

I really do prefer accuracy over power (except in the case of a particular soviet weapon, the Saiga AK-47 or AK-74U, extremely powerful assault rifles that are incredibly robust to boot).

Also, I seem to have a thing for Soviet weapons (Mosin Nagant M44 Carbines, AK's (Soviet originals (47 & 74) as well as modern day replicas and newer variants (AK-101, 103), SVD Dragunov (mmmm sexy sniper rifle), etc).

The round is that of a Barret formerly that of the 50 cal machine gun don't remember the name. My father and his friends were shooting a 50 cal sniper last Sunday. My biggest anger is that when people make these threads they always post guns from games. Like the spas 12 and the colt python those are both uncommon guns that go for over $1000 most likely more. And they always act like they know a lot about guns from playing games. And let me tell you its a completely different experience.

On the quote above Its spelled Barret
http://www.barrettrifles.com/
thats their website.
Barret is one of only four civilians ever to sell a gun of their own design to the military the others are browning ,stoner and either colt or garand.
He did not invent the .50cal bmg round but he deigned the system to make it not blow your arm off or throw your shoulder out of place. The longest confirmed kill with are rifle I believe it was the .50 cal was at 2700 yards by a man from Canada.

Now I had to chose any gun that my father owns it would be this http://www.tecmagex.com/2002/fr/tecloisirs/images/taurus/627ss6_sm_rot_ds.jpg

very good, u got 'em both right. The pistol is propane powered and shoots around 270 fps with .2g 6mm bbs, the mp5 runs on a 9.6v battery, its shooting at 375 fps with the same bbs. The mp5 is accurate to about 150 ft with the backspin (hopup is the technical term) set right, the pistol is accurate to around 100 ft. incase you're wondering, they're both made by Tokyo Marui, extremely high quality (and price) replicas. but my dream gun is still http://www.redwolfairsoft.com/redwolf/airsoft/ProductDetail?prodID=13303 the CAW 6 shot grenade launcher revolver

I need to go by Big 5 sporting store and pick myself up one of those Replica MP5-K's. =o

I should, too, now that I can probably afford it.

i suggest a pellet gun instead, since you like snipers better.

Prohibited in California.

Which is probably the gayest thing ever. But kind of understandable.

Airsoft isn't illegal, however.

Which makes no sense.

I think Wal-Mart sells pellet guns regardless. =D

Anyone interested in military history and snipers should read about Simo Häyhä and Finland's Winter War against Russia. Simo is credited with 505 confirmed kills, 542 unconfirmed kills as a sniper using a Finnish variant, M28, of the Soviet Mosin-Nagant rifle. He preferred iron sights. Simo is also credited with as many as 200 kills with a Suomi M-31 SMG submachine gun, thus bringing his credited kills to at least 705.

As for the longest sniper kill, one really doesn't know. Most countries don't brag about it. In fact, I'm sure the Canadian who has set the 'record' wouldn't even be known about if he wasn't working with Americans. Besides the range of 7,972 ft, what is also amazing is that the shot had to drop 146 ft.

And I don't live in SF.

I see you!

Ghille suits are very cool though. I almost stepped on one of our scout snipers because he was wearing one. I'm most accurate with an M-16A2 with iron sites at 500 yards. Of everything I got to fire (including throwing grenades..) I had the most fun with the MP5.

M16's are pretty nifty, but I don't like the rounds they shoot (5.56mm NATO). But hey, I guess it works. Also, the STANAG clip is a pretty good design imo.

I had a gun added to my collection this weekend.
A friend of mine is moving and gave me his shotgun.
Semi-automatic Savage 745b 12 gauge sawed down to 19".
Holds 5 in the tube and 1 in the chamber.
Pictures will be coming soon.

This one (.45 ACP) made a hole in my face...

And ruined a perfectly good pair of glasses. Still, better than ruining a perfectly good pair of eyes.

i don't understand what you mean by "This one (.45 ACP) made a hole in my face..." did the shell blow out where that hole is??????

nil8
07-30-2007, 04:34 PM
That's a definite misfire. Were you reloading or was that a fired round?
Also, how did it get that close to your face if it was fired?

I had a .38 revolver leave some hefty burns on my hand once because I was stupid, but never have I cooked a round off and had any real bodily damage.

xmastree
07-30-2007, 04:38 PM
The round was overloaded. I fired it and it split the casing where it wasn't supported. The blast blew the bottom out of the magazine, and dislodged the grips. Parts of the shell casing flew back and hit me in the face, drawing blood.

I have it on video somewhere, I think.

Edit: To further explain, look at the right hand one here (http://mywebpages.comcast.net/petej/45gap.case.support.jpg), see how the shell is visible at the bottom? That's where it will split if there's too much pressure when it's fired.

It was probably the primer which hit me in the face, as splinters from the shell case itself would go down into the magazine.

9mm rounds are bad for that, as they aren't as well supported.

What were you firing? A 1911 perchance?

Well that was back in the Philippines, where guns are allowed. I've since sold them. :(

Yes, it was a 1911. Colt .45 Mk IV Gold Cup

I'm not sure what my favorite kind of gun is... I'm kind of versatile... but yeah, sometime this fall I'm gonna go get a bolt action .22 and go to the range, I would love to just go and shoot targets every once in a while. What's a good brand for a .22?

nil8
08-03-2007, 01:39 PM
Marlin or Winchester I've had good success with.
I own a Marlin 22.

Ouch. Did you put in too much grain or did it come like that? Was the round a reload?

I'm not a big fan of 9mm. I've shot them, but they don't seem right for me. I like .22 magnum, .38, .45ACP and rarely .44Magnum, but it's over hyped and ridiculous.
Ruger Super Blackhawk 44Mag FTW. Haven't fired it off in like 5 years.

My love is still rifles. There's something about being patient enough to get the right shot that just clicks with me.

xRyokenx
08-03-2007, 02:30 PM
One thing about firing like a bolt action rifle (and my trying to take the time to do almost everything) is that it will prolly help build patience, if I want to conserve ammo ($20 for a 500 round box, tch) and hit the targets accurately, lol. There's a range somewhere within a 30min drive from my house, so that'll be good to go to (except from what I remember, it's expensive), that or a friend's house somewhere that it's legal to shoot guns at. Meh, I'll figure something out, I have a few months.

By the way, nil8, weren't you going to post pics of your new toy?

Omega

I figure once I turn 18, I'll buy a good Mosin from a surplus store, they're like 80$, shoot moderately powerful ammunition, and it's like 10 cents a pound.

Not to mention, it's bolt-action and Russian. You can't go wrong.
